"This netbook is everything I wanted -- has Windows XP, large hard drive for its size, enough memory for word processing, web surfing, an email. I haven't used Skype yet ... but I did get an external CD/DVD drive to install software from CDs.
The keyboard is great -- much larger and better than other netbooks I've tried. I have a Toshiba laptop, too, and have really loved it, so now I have two. The 4 stars for overall rating are from the shiny black surface. As others have written, this machine is a fingerprint magnet. Otherwise, it's perfect."

"My primary TV is a 35" or 36" Toshiba that I purchased in 1996 that is still going strong. So when my less than two year old Dell netbook failed I went looking for a new netbook and found this Toshiba. At 10" it's the right size and far more comfortable to use than a 9" model while still being small enough to pack. The closer to full size keyboard is what makes this unit more useful for serious typing and the really long battery life is a bonus. I'm very pleased with my purchase."

"If I had written this review about the out-of-the-box product it would not have been as positive. The "hard to get used to" touchpad combined with the netbook's need to update itself with 50+ Microsoft updates and the plethora of pre-installed gadgets slowed the performance of the machine to a crawl for the first 24 - 48 hours of use. But after adding a travel mouse, getting to know the gadgets and allowing the required updates to install, the NB305-310 gradually won me over, mostly. I did need to download codecs to play DVD's via the portable DVD burner I installed, and I uninstalled several add-ons like Works, MS Office Trial, Wild Tangent and Norton. I got fast on the keyboard after a few days (its not 100%...more like 90% regular size), and got used to the somewhat flimsy feel which is a trade-off for its portability. I found enough usefulness in the various Toshiba utilities to keep them around for a while, especially the power management interface which helps optimize battery life based on various performance variables. When my wireless access froze, messing with the Toshiba ConfigFree utility yielded the solution. The netbook travels with the utmost of convenience and the XP operating system is robust and fully supported through 2014. I actually have used it for multi-media (video editing and re-coding via Nero) and as long as I keep the number of programs running to no more than two or three performance is adequate. This netbook was an acquired taste, but now that I have it configured the way I want and have grown accustomeed to it, I am happy with the purchase."

"I had been shying away from buying a laptop because they had always been loaded with that total abomination, Windows Vista. By the time I finally decided I would like to use the internet while on the road,Vista had been replaced with Windows 7. Then I began reading about the shortcomings of only have Windows 7 STARTER, and actually was quite comfortable with XP. So, here I am with an XP netbook I could have had all along anyway. Oh well... I had shied away from netbooks while Vista was the rage (or was it that people were raging against Vista??). That was because I wanted the option to watch DVDs on airplanes and to upload programs. Then I found out that portable DVD players were available for use with netbooks, and that they did not cost an arm and/or a leg. Bingo! This little machine is very cool! Yes, I could have bought it ages ago had I realized about the DVD/CD players available, but I didn't. Now, when I visit my girlfriend, which is all of the time, I can use her wireless router and go online without bothering her machine. (She is a computer professional and makes her living working from home... on her computer, of course... and i didn't want to mess with her machine.) Anyway, I have had great luck with Toshiba products for over 20 years, my daughter had a great Toshiba laptop which she just replaced with another Toshiba laptop 7 or 8 years later, and Consumer Reports listed Toshiba netbooks as among the most reliable. All of that added to the availability of XP, and we had a winner. I am typing on that winner right now. Nice keyboard, by the way! :-)"

"The NB 305 makes for a great Campus Laptop. It is sufficiently fast with an Atom Processor, and 1GB of RAM is satisfactory for Windows XP. I would not attempt to use Windows Vista (or 7) due to resource needs. However, the 305 works well within its expectations--typing notes and surfing the web. I would use this computer as an entry laptop, but do not expect it to do the same tasks as a fully modernized Desktop Replacement."

"This 10" netbook replaces a 9" netbook from another manufacturer that presented me with an irrecoverable blue screen of death. The Toshiba is a great machine, the best part being the wider keyboard as I can now type normally versus trying to work the compressed keyboard on my previous machine. I wish this one had Bluetooth for my existing Bluetooth mouse but I can live with that lack of functionality because the rest of the machine more than makes up for it.
I also like the fact that it came with Windows XP versus Windows 7 because all my other home machines ar XP. It also has wireless B/G/N versus my previous B/G only netbook.
I'm very pleased with my purchase."

The memory maxed out at 2gb it needs a little bit more memory capabilities possibly 4gb of memory and larger harddrive (comes with a 160gb needs a 250gb).
Overall it is a light weight netbook that will work outside the office and has a larger screen and keyboard, that cannot be found on any smartphone."

"While it's not the fastest, the NB305-310 packs a lot of features in a small package. Wanting a black case forced me to this model over the 410. I wish the exterior was the same texture as the 410 since finger smudges really show up on the glossy surface. Since purchase I've upgraded the OS to Windows 7 Home Premium, and very happy with it's performance over XP. Battery life is adequate for a days worth of work before recharging."

"Spent quite sometime researching net books and considered Samsung, Acer, Dell and Toshiba. After giving careful consideration to operating systems and existing software programs I run I opted for a WindowsXP machine over Windows 7 Starter. In looking at hardware options they all seems to be the same memory and hard disk size but the Toshiba had the higher end chip. So far I am extremely pleased and this machine exceeds my expectations. I also have a Toshiba laptop that performs well. My HP Laptop is, well, junk! I get a good 8 hours out of the battery and not in standby mode, this is 8 hours of live streaming data, running a GPS and an internet connection to Google Earth all at the same time."

"I just bought this laptop as a substitute for adding a TV in my minivan, so it is surely a better deal than that! The keyboard is very nice and comfortable, the built-in-webcam (a feature I love) is good,`yet the built-in speakers and microphone lack in volume...
No bluetooth, oh well... but the sleep-usb-charge feature is cool. Weight is very light, and size very portable. Design is sleek and modern, with a long lasting battery (at least to me it is... 11 hours, great!)
CPU usage really boosts though... I was download Sony Vegas while listening to "Gangta Luv" on YouTube and "googling" a driver for my handycam (due to the lack of a DVD/CD slot) and the blue screen of death popped up, and windows restarted... :("

"Everything was as expected except that many applications want 1024 x 768 screen resolution and this device provides a best 1024 x 700. This means that some apps may not work as best as possible. The only problem so far, after 1 month, is that the screen wall paper does not always display fully when logging on. I think again that this is due to the limited resolution. This has not resulted in an inability to compute as needed. I love the fact that it is lightweight and because it has such a long battery life, I don't need to lug the power supply around."

Go to 2 Gigs of DRAM (unless you can't afford it), it does make a difference. But battery life has been excellent and I've been use to carrying huge power laptops around since they were first invented... this is like taking 2 Iphones around... very nice for the frequent traveler. "In general the NB305-N310 netbook fulfilled all my expectations (e.g., small, compact, fast, big mouse pad and keys, good battery life, and a really nice screen resolution). The only problems are that this computer has a lousy WEBCAM (poor resolution) and very weak speakers (you would need external speakers to amplify the sound at a reasonable level). The others things are that it over heat quickly which makes this computer sometimes uncomfortable to hold. It also comes with MS Works as standard softwares which are OK but you would need to subscribe and pay extra money to get MS Office 2007. Overall, it is a good netbook."

"I bought the NB305 for grad school work. This means it will be used for office and internet tasks. Portability (a long battery life) is a must. The NB 305 lets me get through an entire work day on a single charge. It's light and easy to carry. Design is stylish. Picks up wi-fi signals easily. 10.1 inch screen is the standard size (I was initially eyeing an 11 or 12 inch netbook), but it is bright and provides a very high quality image. Performance is adequate for above stated uses. I have had good experiences with Toshiba parts; this is my first Toshiba computer. Provided it exhibits the same quality as my other Toshiba products, I am and will remain a very satisfied customer."

"I bought the NB305 in addition to my Tecra M8 for travel. If it get's stolen I can afford it and it contains no personal or financial information. I travel by motorcycle and I need things to be small and light. I just returned from a 2-week motorcycle trip and this thing worked great. Battery life is over 8 hours which is really handy. Video playback from my videocam at 640x480 worked fine, but greater resolutions seemed to overwhelm the CPU and the video was no longer smooth. However, for it's intended purpose (internet access, email, video and photo download from cameras), it works great. The unit is small and light weight and battery life of 8+ hours is great. I'm very glad I bought this NB305."

"This netbook does exactly what it is supposed to do, at the speed you'd expect from a netbook. The keyboard is quite responsive (the main reason I chose this netbook over the newer model was that the newer model had a terrible keyboard). I have been able to load all the software I usually use, and although it does run substantially slower than my "big" notebook, the size and weight differences make the tradeoffs worthwhile. This is my first Toshiba. I used to be a big D**l fan, but their customer service became laughable. I have heard much good about Toshiba service, and I am thrilled to have this netbook in my arsenal."

I connected an external DVD drive, but could not play a movie because of screen resolution. At least not with the provided software. After downloading the VLC player, I was able to play a DVD movie. The bottom of the netbook gets warm, but not extremely hot. Wireless internet works flawlessly and connects at 65Mbts to my Wireless-N router. It is very suitable for traveling. The USB ports and the multi-card reader provide good data connections. Mine came with Windows XP and it works just fine. Overall, the netbook reflects the quality that Toshiba is known for in its laptops."

"A netbook is the right device for my use, a small, relatively lightweight machine that can be carried in a briefcase. I am not using it for gaming, or for extensive access to the internet but as a business tool to keep word and spreadsheet documents available as I move from location to location. This device has XP as I need it to access my business e-mail via the web. It comes with a lot of optional software only some of which I will use. The performance is great and the battery life lets me use it all day long without having to carry the AC adapter as well. The keyboard is surprisingly easy to use even though my typing skills are not the best. I compared a lot of devices and found this had the best performance for the money."

"I needed an inexpensive netbook for occasional use. After extensive research I chose the Toshiba NB305 and ordered it from Toshiba Online. The ordering and shipment were flawless, and the product was exactly as advertised and was everything I had expected. All of the features--display, battery life, weight, ports, etc.--are excellent. Two of the features I value most are the great keyboard (almost full size) and trackpad, both of which are hard to describe and sometimes iffy in an online purchase, but in this case they are almost as good as my gold standard, which is the Thinkpad X-Series (which is far more expensive). The performance is typical of netbooks, which means adequate but not speedy. To address this I upgraded the 1GB of memory and the slow 5400 RPM disk. I fixed these by upgrading to 2GB RAM and replacing the disk with a smaller solid state drive (SSD). These added about 1/3 to the cost, but the machine is now actually quite fast and boots in a fraction of the former time. All in all, this is a fabulous little machine, and even with the upgrades was competitive with other netbooks."

Keyboard isn't cramped, good touch-pad with zoom feature, seems to run forever on battery (haven't timed it yet). Great customizable power saver utility. The speakers are not great - but I use earbuds & external speakers so no problem. Decent Web-Cam - seems to work well in low light although they should make covers for Web-Cams - it creeps me out - like a beady little eyeball. "I have owned several Toshiba laptops over my writing career and liked them all. What I needed now was a mini notebook that traveled well, gave me internet access, allowed me to write when and where I needed and had a battery that lasted through a few paragraphs of prose. GOT IT!
One small negative: performance can be slow at startup but I live with it because I like the rest of the machine. I do more and more writing "in the cloud" so software operation isn't a big factor. I can see the screen clearly even in fairly bright sun and, oh, the keys are just a bit off from normal but not hard to get the hang of. If you need to travel and stay in touch and crank out scripts or projects all the while, I would firmly recommend this unit."

"This is a great little netbook. Plenty of features for what I need it for. I wish it did have a serial connector (not a big deal, plenty of cables on the market to convert usb to serial). Loads faster than my home computer! What else can I say,,, Toshiba, you have done it again! Great product!"

"Pros: slim, lightweight, sleek design, decent graphics, Windows XP (much better for a notebook than the more intense Vista), plenty of RAM (upgradable) and storage, long battery life.
Cons: Too much going on at start-up, takes forever to load up. Heats up fairly quick when in use. No CD ROM or backup disc. External speakers are a must, rather than a convenience.
This is my first laptop and I have owned it little more than a month now so I can't speak for durability or long-term use. It's good for what I bought it for, which is to surf the web while I'm on the go or at work. I will definitely continue using my desktop for watching movies/videos and gaming."

"I'm very pleased with this little guy. After I cleared the system of much of the "free software" and added my OpenOffice, I was surprised at how quickly OpenOffice opens up. The keyboard takes some getting used to, especially the location of the home, delete, insert and a few other keys. Keyboard has a very good feel, pretty close to my old Toshiba laptop. The 10" screen also took getting used to but it is so sharp that I have no trouble reading. Have not yet replaced the 1gb ram with 2gb - don't have any applications that require it, but I would have purchased it with 2gb if that had been an option (should have been ---- Thank you MS). I kept the Norton software long enough to download Avast, Ad-aware and Spybot - then goodbye Norton. Overall I'm very pleased -- the thing is only as bulky as a few magazines, and only weighs a couple of pounds -- overall just what I needed. Don't consider this as a replacement for a full sized laptop however. I still much prefer working on my old Toshiba Satellite."

"I build my own Desktop PC's, but when it comes to laptop's I use strictly MacBook Pro's in which I currently own a 15" MacBook Pro. I'm going to Europe this Spring and I wanted something more compact to take with me. Don't want the iPad, already have an iPod Touch. After some research and my experience with Windows based PC's, this little Toshiba is perfect for what I need for when I go over to Europe."

"I love my new laptop and take it everywhere. It's so small it fits in my purse and i hardly notice the weight. Note-taking in class is also made much easier now, and the battery life is long enough that I often don't need to bring my wall cord with me. I was disappointed, however, that the speakers are located underneath the device, providing poorer sound quality. Also, the webcam is not as good as I had hoped. Overall, though, this product is top-notch and very comfortable and easy to use."

"The netbook is very good. Fast enough, large enough drive, good display, and very sturdy. My only criticisms pertain to the software. I don't need or want all the extra software, such as games, and I have yet to find the files, either on the netbook or in a separate disc, that would allow me to reinstall the Windows operating system or other software, if it is ever necessary to do so."

"I bought a returned item that had been bought and returned within 3 days. The computer did not have any CDs with it, as I would expect with a new computer. I asked the clerk about it, and he stated this did not come with CDs. I find this to be unacceptable. If I have issues with anything, I cannot handle it myself without buying an additional copy of an Operating system and Office suite. Is there any way you can send me one? at least for the OS. thanks."

"I have a MacBook Pro 17' laptop which I find uncomfortable to tote back and forth to classes every day.
The Macbook Air would have been the next logical choice, but while lighter, it still is large - 13". I was waiting for the next apple product - unfortunately for them it will be the I Pad. I do not want a larger IPhone type device as I have an IPhone already. I wanted a keyboard, smaller size, and portable machine. I was not thrilled to go to a windows based platform, but, alas, everything else I wanted was on such a machine.
I carefully read every review I could on netbooks, windows 7, windows 7 lite, and windows xp. I decided to go with the devil I knew- windows xp- and with the Toshiba NB305-N310. Its keyboard is a great size, its size and weight is perfect for my 75 minute commute in which I type out lesson plans and make notes on what happened in class. I am very satisfied for the most part. I gave the features rating 4 stars instead of 5 mostly because of the configfree utility and the fact that the manual for the netbook is on the hard drive. I still do not feel confident using this utility, and will have to research in more online to figure it out. I did add more ram, and am delighted with the difference it has made. I am running windows office 7 without difficulty. I also bought an external dvd drive and added it without a problem. Battery life is excellent."

"This Netbook stock can run Pro Tools LE 8.0, which is sick. Not a million tracks, of course, but just to have it run a very picky and peculiar piece of software was shocking. I have a brand spanking new 2.8MHz Dual Core Gateway running W7 64-bit with 8GB of memory and it can't run PTLE. HAHA. The next thing I wanted to do was run an ad-hoc network so I could connect my XBox 360 to the internet. No go in W7 Starter. Same can be said for bridging. Such a basic functionality, gone. I hate you Microsoft. I hate you with all my heart.
Back to the netbook, it's a fantastic little unit. The screen is nice. I'll leave the protective film on there until it's so hazy and old I'm compelled to take it off, at which point I'll put a privacy film on.
The keyboard takes a little getting used to. The real estate available means that some keys are not aligned where you thought they'd be, but after a few minutes you're back to your regular speed. This is my first netbook, and I haven't really played with the others too much but I really like this thing. Right now I'd say it's running better than my work laptop (not the gateway, a Dell dual-core Latitude D620 that's got a few miles on it).
This netbook is also as asthetically pleasing as any laptop. the Seashell chassis is nice looking.
The only gripe I have aside from Microsoft's horse trading OS antics is the lack of a Firewire port. This is definitely something that needs to be addressed in the next gen. At least give me an expansion prot and let me go get an adapter card so I can use FW or eSATA or and aircard or what have you. This isn't specific to Toshiba. None of the netbooks has this. Lack of an optical drive I can understand, but I'm sure there's room in this form factor for a PCMCIA slot.
Last thing I just thought of about the screen. Seems to be a lot of wasted real estate around the bezel that could be more screen. Just sayin'."
