"Average netbook....speed and functions. Must upgrade memory to 2 gig.....basic 1 gig doesn't cut it. Too much swapping with HD and too slow. Keyboard very "touchy"...have to exert a lot of pressure on keys. Not a "light touch". Battery life good. Fairly light weight. Low refresh rate on screen (60) no way to increase it."

"I am an intermediate pc user and had no problem with set up. Windows 7 was also not a problem. I have been using Vista. After getting used to the smaller screen and type size, I have been pleased with the graphics. The key board is easy to use and I have very large hands. I have purchased a portable DVD drive which works well. The battery life is excellent."

"I rarely need to plug it in - and it's so light I don't even notice when I'm carrying it. On the other hand, the keyboard's soft and mushy, and I don't like how the return and tab keys have been shrunk to almost nothing. It also comes packed with software that I don't want or need, and which uses bandwidth in order to communicate with remote servers and remind me to update products that I don't even want on the computer. I've spent a lot of time removing this bloatware, and I expect to spend a lot more. But I'm picking nits. Every manufacturer loads their machines with this stuff. Overall it's a wonderful change to my life."

"Love my little netbook. Only problem I have is that
screen is so sensitive, I need to figure out how to disable the screen touch and just use the mouse or the buttons.
The only other problem is the power plug loosens from the netbook and stops charging."

"Bought this so that I wouldn't have to drag that big ole laptop that I have. This little baby travels and is easy to get through airports with no problems. Like the simplicity and light weight of the machine. The keys take a bit of getting used to, but once you get the hang of it--about two times, you are off and running. Enjoy being able to take it out on my deck and surf. Very happy I made this choice."

"The NB305 is an excelent choise Except, a: the camera is less then the Acer one, and B: it shares the lockup problems with that system. Other then that its an excelent choise, fits in my motercycles side bag, Is virtualy fingerprint free, and has an amazing 4.3 hours charge. It also finds the closest hotspot better then the acer, and with windows 7, it gives me less trouble then the xp on the other machine. The performance may be inhanced with more memory, or the cpu may be at fault. I have another Toshiba and feel right at home with this one. Also have a Toshiba TV and VCR/CD and have always loved them."

"This netbook is great. The battery life is incredible; I have yet to go below 50% after using it for 4hrs. It's fast and super easy to use. I primarily use my netbook for internet surfing and for itunes. The only downside to this netbook, is the external speakers are a joke. I don't think I've ever heard worse. So, it's a star off for that."

"I bought this notebook because I needed a Windows machine to run some of my scientific software. Personally, I prefer Macs and use my MacBook Pro for nearly everything. However, I occasionally need a PC, and I was attracted to the low price. Overall, I think this netbook is a great value, but it has some flaws. The trackpad feature is a very pale imitation of the newer Mac trackpads (it theoretically allows the 2 finger swipe to scroll through documents/pages). However, it really doesn't work as well as it is supposed to, and I find it to more of a pain than it is worth (BTW, if you have never tried the new Mac trackpad, I suggest that you do so).
The 'chiclet' keyboard also takes some getting used to.
Overall, I like the Toshiba NB305-N410BN because it is inexpensive, simple, and works pretty well for email and simple web browsing. The battery life (~11hours) is also great."

"This is a good netbook for the price, with only one drawback for me and that is the sound. The speakers are on on the bottom and the sound is weak. I remedied that by buying a nice mini speaker with good bass. I have 2 other laptops and a PC. This one is perfect for me "on the go" rather than the 15" ones. I love it and use it as a "netbook".... even accessing my itunes to play music and radio stations at work and I can watch my movies, podcast and listen to books without the bulk of the other laptops. Glad I bought it."

"I travel frequently in my job; between facilities and occasionally overnight, and it was always an issue lugging a full size laptop to offsite meetings, etc. I researched the netbooks and decided the Toshiba NB305 had the features I liked such as "chiclet" style keys and a long battery life in addition to easily fitting in my briefcase. I used it on flights and overnights in the hotels, to just connecting wireless while in lengthy meetings and it's been great. The 11 hours of battery life are perfect for flights and time spent waiting in the airport, and my java brown model is stylish as well. I did a lot of research on buyer comments before I purchased, and many of the negative ones, all I can say is the buyer didn't read the description or instructions before using. It's pretty clear that it comes with Windows 7 starter, if you don't know the difference, then don't buy it and complain later! I also had no problems with connecting and using an external DVD burner, which seemed to be an issue with many. I am adding a gig of RAM, i would be nice if it came with 2."

"The long battery life is excellent. However, sometimes you have to press hard on the keys to make sure the characters are entered. Also, repeated hibernation caused the flash card utility (the Fn keys utility) to disappear. I guess that's why there is a "Restart Flash Cards" under the TOSHIBA utilities. I downloaded and installed the latest Flash Card program from Toshiba support and it seems solved the problem."

But the main reason I bought this laptop is so I can do video chat with my son in the air force. The last time he was home on leave he help me find a good laptop at a good price. So the way he picked this NB305 TOSHIBA out of all the laptops, notebooks and netbooks was by mashing on the keys. Yes I said mashing the keys, my son knows that I type with one finger and not softly. So thank you to my son for helpping me pick a quality laptop so we can stay in touch no matter what country he lives in."

"I am a dedicated Apple user. I have not owned a PC in over 12 years. However, I was sick of carrying around a giant macbook weighing me down; and I refuse to buy an iPad. I wanted something to take with to conferences and travel. I researched a lot about netbooks and was extremely hesitant about buying one and going back to PCs. I kept coming back to Toshiba's netbooks, and Im glad I got it. It's super compact, lightweight. Excellent space (250 GB)--bigger than my macbook. The only downside is that there is only 1GB of ram, but it's fixable. It does get hot very quickly, so I wouldn't advise sitting it on your lap. Battery life is fantastic when configured. So far, I've gotten 9.5 hours of use. I've heard others who've been able to get 10+ hours. All-in-all, a good purchase."

It does work well for the use that I intended: take it on business trips, use it to give powerpoint presentations. It is some what slow on downloading off the internet.
Overall I give it a 3-4 out of 5 in utility vesus cost. Some of the newer lap tops are only ~$50 more and seem in retrospect to possibly be a better buy."

"Very good product overall. Minor problems: 1) a couple of keys on the keyboard not always registering when pressed. 2) would prefer that the two touch pad buttons be a bit larger and located a bit closer to the space bar. 3) speakers are weak.
I would like to see Toshiba work more closely with Skype and similar companies to enhance the experience of using netbooks as phones.
I am also hoping to see a next generation netbook that can serve well as an eBook reader, because I would `prefer not to have to buy a device that is devoted to this purpose."

"Nice looking netbook - solid feel with a good keyboard, one of my major reasons for purchase. Netbooks are pretty much the same processor/mother board/hardware so the build quality and keyboard can set a brand apart fromthe others. The memory card slot does not accept MemorySticks, just SD and mmc (who uses those?). I boosted the memory to 2gb but only noted a speed up to the booting process. I like the 6 cell battery and 9hrs for me use time. The keyboard is nice as it has separate up/dwn and arrow keys. I am not a "touch" typist. Too much "junkware" to uninstall but it's the same for HP and some others. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase."

"I was looking to upgrade my phone to a smart phone but small screens and small keyboards didn't do it for me. Laptops are too big and battery life is not great not to mention too heavy to carry around.
This computer does everything I need from word processing, videos, surfing the net and holds all the files, pictures and music I need. It lasts all day, is small enough to take anywhere, yet big enough to use easily and all I need to do is charge it when I go to bed just like my phone.
And to top it off the cost was comparable to or less than some of the phones I was looking at. Large hard drive, large screen, full size keyboard, light weight and killer battery life it's a win for me and everyone who's looked it over with an open mind loves it."

"The NB305 is a handy little unit, lightweight, pleasantly designed with a fair sized keyboard; the battery life is excellent (with qualification, since the Netbook is not that heavily used). I promptly upgraded the RAM to 2GB and the awful Win 7 starter to Win 7 Professional 32-bit, and the machine has been working like a charm for what it is supposed to do. Two major gripes, however, are: (a) The onboard video card offers a poor screen resolution at which even elements of the OS (such as dialog boxes, UIs) are not resized properly - often obscuring the command buttons (Yes/No or Next/Back or Confirm/Cancel). (b) The keys, including the spacebar, need to be pressed really hard to make them work, making the use of the keyboard good for people who learnt to use a mechanical typewriter, but rather difficult for me, since I am used to light touch-typing on a QWERTY interface. Otherwise, good buy for the price. Recommended accessory: An external DVD writer."

"I bought this netbook in May 2010 after struggling with an HP notebook for 2 years that just wouldn't perform. This little netbook really surprised me. I can actually type on the keyboard with my big fingers. It runs every application I've installed on it except for an HP laser printer driver. It is very small and light and can travel with me anywhere. It has a big 320 GB hard drive, 3 USB ports and a monitor port for an external monitor. Overall I like this netbook very much. But - there are a few things about it that would make it a much better value. First, the unit comes configured with 1 GB of memory. This isn't enough if you run multiple applications like I often do. I'm going to have to buy a 2 GB module soon to stop the "out of resources" messages I keep getting when I have multiple apps open. Also, Toshiba should ship this unit with bluetooth. There are lots of useful bluetooth devices out there now - headsets, speakers, etc., and no reason not to include this functionality. Finally, the battery life is pretty good, I can squeeze about 5 hours out of it, but it would really be great if I could run it for about 10 hours, since this is a normal day at school and on the road for me. "I bought it originally to use as a portable back up system for my speech device. I have no tongue, due to cancer, and speak poorly hence, the device. It has Microsoft Works loaded and that's all I need for an integrated program. It boots reasonably fast, especially when compared with my laptop. I thought the keyboard would be cramped but happily, it turned out to be just fine. The real test is how it ages. A reasonable sized hard drive but a little light on ram. Good machine."

Good Netbook for Traveling and as a backup device May 28, 2010

"This specific model has an excellent keyboard that can be touch typed on and has very good tactile feel. You dont feel like your typing on such a small device. Battery life is astounding when configured properly, i've gotten 10 hours, which is enough for an international flight if you shut it down and take a break midflight. The small dimension of this make it excellent to use in cramped aircraft cabins (i.e., economy) The hardrive is fairly good size as a secondary computer and has 3 USB ports and a memory card slot as well. Loading on software was quick using a thumb drive and was quicker than a CD. Although no optical drive, but who cares anyway as it saves a lot of weight and space. The form factor makes it nearly effortless travel companion. The 10.1 inch display can get very bright when you want it too and renders details crisply with good contrast. The width of the screen is almost the same width as a piece of paper, so the smaller screen size is easy to adjust too. At times on certain websites i struggle with the small print, but that is just part of the trade off with a netbook. Its easily outweighed by light weight and small dimensions. Overall construction quality is very good and is on par with larger laptops. The case is typically good Toshiba tight construction and I have NOT noticed any creaking plastic joints and the gap tolerances on the housing are uniform. The quality of materials used (various finishes and types of plastics) is overall good with some nicely finished bronzed metallic surfaces that lend a colorful upscale look without giving it an appearance of being a kids toy. The only detail I thought could have been executed better, was a clear plastictrim piece around the bezel of display frame. This is thin and easily scratched clear plastic with a small margin of overlap over the display. When you run your finger over it to wipe down the display, it feels like a thin cheap plastic spacer piece that was meant for shipping the unit after manufacture. Upon closer inspection to my suprise it is actually part of the housing! Specification wise, on paper the processor appears to be fast enough at 1.66 mhz, however, I am "underwhelmed" by the day to day speed at which applications run, MS Office applications, video excerpts from the news services, etc. Part of the issue may be that the RAM is only 1GB. So i plan on upgrading to 2GB to have things move along a little faster. Also, it may be the Windows 7 may be sucking up a lot of my RAM as well, but I am not techie enough to determine that. One note of caution, these smaller netbooks in general with their smaller cases generate and trap heat faster so they tend to run hot. This unit was obviously made for desktop use because the fan intake port for this is directly on the bottom! So if you have it resting on your lap, your pants fabric will obstruct the airflow and it will run hotter and performance deteriorates (slower). They need to put the air intake ports on the side and pull the air through to the back or the other side to keep this thing cooled down, since this thing is meant to be on your lap anyway? This netbook is offered with a lot features except for BLUETOOTH? So you cannot use it in conjunction with your SMARTPHONE. This is a serious oversight and I almost did not buy this netbook because of the lack of BLUETOOTH, however, all the other good things about this outweighed the lack of that one feature. I can overlook this being installed with only Windows 7 Starter which is cost cutting measure (that can be upgraded by the user anyway), but the lack of onboard bluetooth needs to be remedied in future iterations. Overall this is a very compelling package, for those frequent travelers (business or pleasure) who want to go through airport checkpoints with ease and not have to lug around a heavy and bulky laptop that easily fits into a brief case or even a zippered portfolio. When compared with an Apple IPAD, this Toshiba Netbook is a superior buy pricewise and both units runs and performs nearly identicallly to me when i tested both."

"I needed something for travel that offered most of the features of a full-sized laptop in a smaller package. I researched the netbook options and decided on the Toshiba. Good Decision. It does everything I need it to do...word processing, web surfing, email, PowerPoint, Skype, iTunes...with some minor sacrifices to processing speed and lack of built in CD/DVD drive. I recently took it with me on a trip to eastern Europe and it was a worthy travel companion--easy to carry and capable. Based on that experience, I upgraded the memory to 2GB. Installation was simple and quick, but I'm not sure that I see a huge change in performance. The "almost" full-sized keyboard on the Toshiba was a selling point for me and while it is helpful, I'm not too thrilled with the slippery-feeling keys. Getting used to that. Battery life is one of the real benefits of this machine. How nice not to have to refuel every couple hours, especially when on the road. Although I'm only a month into ownership, the machine seems solid and I expect it to wear well as I tote it around the country and around the world. I also purchased a neoprene sleeve for storage and transport and I think it's an important protection for travel."

"I have waited 2 years for a mini-laptop to reduce the weight I carry when traveling. Because I don't like changing machines, my travel laptop is my main work machine. Therefore I need a minimum of 2GB RAM, 250 GB harddisk, and the capability to handle Office 2007 and some photo software. I was able to upgrade the NB305 to the minimum requirements - so I bought it. The only drawback is the maximum resolution of 1024x600. Some dialogs fall off the screen and I have some software that I cannot run (an external display does not always fix the problem).
Otherwise I am very happy with the performance and especially the battery life"

"Well-built; great screen; keyboard is quite usable; added memory to get to 2gb--that should be the way these come out of the factory! Windows 7 Starter is fine. Runs everything that I have loaded so far without a problem.
Faster performance than I expected. I can even do simple photo editing on it and play music while I'm doing that. I got it mainly as a companion to my DSLR for reviewing and backing up photos when traveling. It fits into my camera bag no problem.
Web surfing seems just as quick as with my regular laptop.
Ads claim anywhere from 9 to 11 hours, but with regular use online I've been getting 7+ hours. Typically I'm charging up every third day or so. Very convenient especially when traveling by air. Battery will last all but the longest overseas flights.
Speakers were pretty weak out of the box, but with some tweaking of the RealTek sound card drivers they turned out okay and usable, but for good sound you need headphones which is what you'll probably be using anyway when traveling."

"I needed a small, very portable machine due to personal circumstances. I picked the NB305 due to favorable ratings from PC Mag and the like. So far I'm pretty happy with it. Processing speed, while not stunning is adequate to my needs. The keyboard takes a little adjusting (getting there) and at my age the screen size is a little more of a challenge than I anticipated. All in all, though, I'm happy with the purchase.
There is one serious fault, however. The system BIOS canNOT be set to allow booting from a USB disk or flash drive. This means that in the event of a catastrophic disk failure, it is NOT possible to boot a rescue boot image and restore a full disc image during a cold-metal reinstall. This is unconscionable! Fix it, now!"

"The Toshiba mini notebook, NB305-N410BN, is very light in weight, compact, portable and I have had no problem connecting to the wifis I use. I purchased this netbook for a trip planned to France in June to use for emails and Skype."

"I love the size of the notebook, makes it easy to carry around. My problem with it is that you have no programs provided with it and I have to purchase them besides that. Also it needs a CD room to come with it as you can not add anything without one."
Excellent alternative to a bigger laptop March 07, 2010

"This is a great alternative to carrying a regular laptop, if you have simple work to do or need to get online. It's not intended for heavy usage or loading it up with lots of programs and games, but if you just want something light and easy to take with you while you are traveling so you can stay connected but a cell/iphone is too small, this a great alternative.
We were heading out on vacation and I was in the middle of an online class but didn't want to take our regular size laptop because it's too cumbersome. This worked out beautifully, I sat by the pool with my little Toshiba netbook and participated in my class through the wireless access at the resort.
It is so small and light, that there was no extra laptop bags, because it fit into my carry on and it was very easy to take out and get through airport security.
I wouldn't want this netbook to be our only computer, but it's great for an extra computer in the house and easy for traveling."

Could be improved with built-in G3 and bluetooth, also an additional USB port. Also experienced problem with speaker and microphone (low to no volume)."

"This is a beautfiful looking and well crafted notebook. I bought it as a back up for travel and days in the city when I don't really need full computing power. I appreciate the near-full key board and convenviontal format touch pad. Have been a bit frustrated by a sluggish space bar and hoping that either I will adapt or it will improve. I also don't really understand the commitment to Windows 7 Starter edition. Although not as weak as first anticipcated, it seems like a throwaway and I wish Toshiba had pushed to the Home Premium edition. Have only had this a few weeks, but so far so good."

"I am very pleased with my new Toshiba Netbook NB305-N410BN. I did upgrade the mempry to 2 GB and I did find a considerable speed difference. Also I did purchase a passive cooling pad made by ThermaPak, this also increased the speed by cooling the computer by 10 degress F. The one outstanding thing about this model is the battery life, I can easily get 8-9 hours from 1 full charge. The keyboard is an excellent size, you hardly know that you are using a smaller one.The screen resolution is excellent and the mouse pad has excellent response. I would highly recommend this to anyone that wants a light weight travel computer. One thing I was concerned about was how to install software, it was easy. I just put a thumb drive in my desktop and copied the MS Windows Office CD to the thumb drive then inserted it into the Toshiba Netbook and the installation was actually faster than doing it with a CD."

"I purchased the Toshiba NB305 netbook to take to work with me, and also because my other laptop which has a 15.6 inch screen is just to big and cumbersome to quickly flip open and pop on my lap.Since buying it I find myself using only this awesome mini due not only to its ease of use and size, but it does everything I need and is fast with a great screen.I will say that I added one gig of ram which brings it to two,but that along with its 250 gb hardrive makes this little missle a gem in my book.

"I really like the size of the mini but either there are issues with Microsoft Windows 7 Starter, or there is something else wrong as I seem to have some compatibility problems with quality software manufacturers like Norton. I don't think I should be having these types of issues so early on in the use of the notebook. Also, there seems to be little if any sound volume. Not sure if it's meant only to be used with head phones, but the sound without headphones is almost non existent. Battery life is great as is connectivity via wireless router."

"I bought this net-book at a retail store. There aren't any problems with this net-book. The screen is a little larger than 10 inches. The keyboard is full sized and very comfortable to work with. The built in webcam is pretty nice for skype or messaging. Its extremely quiet. The speed is great. Dozens of great features. Super fast wifi connectivity. Design is great. The keyboard is so easy to type with. Its like I'm typing on a regular sized laptop! I would absolutely recommend this net-book to anyone who wants a smaller sized laptop without sacrificing features."

"Pleased with the appearance and the keyboard. I expected more performance. Performance reminds me of notebooks 10 years ago. An example is that it takes about 3-5 seconds to delete each e-mail and when deleting dozens it takes a very long time. I was expecting much better."

"I've had my NB305-N410BN for 2 weeks now. The negative is the sound volume, in a nut shell you can barely hear anything unless you use head phones. On the plus side, it has a pudgey finger friendly keyboard, the screen doesn't feel as small as you would think, the battery life is great, and it's light weight and easy for the on-the-go user. Although it only comes with the Windows 7 'starter', it does the job. No need to upgrade and waste cash."

"This is a good netbook for general surfing. I purchased it for web surfing, e-mail and checking social networks on the go, and at home. The battery life is almost 6 times better than my laptop. The portability is the key to choosing this over the laptop when moving around. Once it boots up the speed is good for what I use it for, just don't expect to game with it. The screen is a reasonable size and the colors are vivid."

"My NB305-N410 has performed well so far. It looks great, seems well constructed, and the battery goes on and on. I have a few issue with it however. The sound from the unit's speakers is so low (at full volume) that it's almost inaudible. The screen is fairly sharp; however colors seem a little washed out. I've looked for adjustments to correct both of these problems, but couldn't find them. Also, purchasers should be aware that this (like many) netbooks comes with the "Starter" version of Windows 7. The upgrade to the full version costs about $80, I believe. Windows 7 Starter runs fine and pretty dependably though - it's just missing some of the nicer bells and whistles one gets with the full version."

The one detraction noted to date is the sound or better stated the lack of. The sound is adequate using ear phones but unacceptable otherwise."

I now get much more work done, and don't have to lug around a heavier laptop. Ok, I'm getting used to the keyboard, but the more I use it the better I get."
