"I don't use this as my primary. I have a beast gaming laptop for that. But for my on the go computer, this thing is tough. Never too warm, never too weak. It stays cool and I can't max it out, and I am HARD on computers. The system keeps it from running too much at once. If you need more ram, it's easy to upgrade. No problems with this one."

"I like the color, blue, and the easy gripping of the mini netbook when the screen is closed. The keyboard is very responsive to touch and feels very good. I like the included Toshiba software already installed on the mini netbook. I prefer the 10.1' screen size over laptops with a 15" screen size. This smaller screen and the fact of not having a CD drive makes the weight more favorable to me. I prefer using my Toshiba 320 GB external hard drive more than a CD or flash drive. I want to upgrade the RAM from 1 GB to 2 GB."

"Overall, I really like my netbook. I love the size and weight as it makes it really easy to carry around. I travel alot and it's a nice size to carry with me. Not as bulky as a full size laptop. However, it would have been even better if the RAM was upgraded. I'm going to upgrade to 2G but it would be even better if I could get to 3G. I don't understand why there is only 1G installed. I would suggest that 2G should be standard. I shouldn't have to invest more money into it immediately after buying it."

"Reports of the death of the netbook are premature. They are low-glamor, low-profit (so not Marketing's Dream), but rugged and useful. We got the NB505 mainly to be able to log on while traveling, and it's as good as any Windows computer for that. (A Mac would have cost 4x as much!) For this we loaded it up with freeware: Firefox and LibreOffice portable, IrfanView, Paint.net, YC3, Greenshot, MS Security Essentials, etc., which it runs just fine. The NB505 boots reasonably fast, has been 100% stable, and has a great display. The battery life is so good I turned the brightness way up, even on battery. The minor weaknesses are the keyboard and touchpad ergonomics. Though not as bad as some laptops, the keyboard needs "volcano"-shaped keys to better quickly locate your fingers. The touchpad is smallish and lacks easily detectable edges to help with scrolling. Adding black tape solves this. The camera, microphone, and speaker work just fine ... better than expected (if even expected) in for this price range."

"Love it. Great for a toater. Music, videos, pics, and audible books. For the money you can't beat it. Toshiba support is always on the desktop if you need them. Toshiba and windows updates are on top of it for you too. Files from MS Work go right into and from it with no problem. Have a nice desktop and large laptop but seem to stay on this one the most. Just Handy to have I guess."

Everything seems to work great except that the wifi connectivity notifications seems to bounce back and forth between connected and unconnected (even next to the router). Otherwise, it seems to work perfectly with Ubuntu."

"My little Mini Toshiba laptop is great! It's easy to carry around and easy to use. Just wish it had full version of Windows 7 so I can put my own desktop photo on it. Otherwise all is fine. I store everything on a flahsdrive as to not use space and energy on my mini.I also use a retractable mouse with it because I find that so much easier than using the built-in one."

"I was using a large laptop before receiving this as a gift. Yes, this is smaller, but that means it is far more portable and I have found that very useful. I have seen other netbooks with small and awkward keyboards, this has a perfect keyboard, comfortable and easy to use, which is great, I've been typing for over 30 years and well, it's hard for me to adjust to a keyboard that is too small. The speakers are a little weak but if you really need sound quality good portable speakers are available. My hearing is not as good as it used to be, so adding speakers helped me a lot. I love this machine! It was super easy to set up and use, it does exactly what I need it to do. I like having the 3 usb ports if I want to add any peripherals. This is a sweet little friend."

"I bought this thinking that a netbook would be great because toshiba is a relyable brand and my old laptop died in 2 years, but this one doesn't even last me a year! The key board is really hard to get used to and the netbook freezes up on me at least 5 times a day. The mouse feels awful and grainy and the battery life was okay until it died. I took it back and they wouldn't give me a refund, but would replace it. The replacement battery leaked so I decided to give up and get an actual laptop. I'm so glad I did and I defenetly would not recommend this netbook. I am now glad that I bought a laptop and definetly won't get a netbook again. The bad thing is I wasted my money on a piece of junk. I hope that if someone buys this netbook the same thing does not happen to them, but this is just a warning of how bad this netbook is."

"The Toshiba NB505 is an awesome notebook to have, I can you use it with travel without having to plug it up for hours, and it small enough to carry to other functions if I need to use wifi and send a quick email. The one feature I wished it had was the ability to personalize the background like you can do on a larger laptop. The notebook should be an extension of the laptop so that lack of personalization is someone bothering"

"Although I already have a laptop, I wanted something smaller and lighter for occasional use. This has worked out very well. I would recommend upgrading the memory to a 2GB module -- it is currently inexpensive and I have noticed even better performance with it. You can get the upgrade right from Toshiba. I use my netbook for internet and Microsoft Office, and it works well. Realize that netbooks are small, and to be small, they must have a compact keyboard. This means that you may have to get used to typing on it and some people may not find it as comfortable. I still find it to be a decent keyboard with a good feel to it. Battery life is quite good. I haven't tested it fully, but mine looks like it should easily last several hours. Very pleased so far."

It is a great netbook that serves my purposes well. I use MS Office all the time and have no trouble opening several documents. Great for email and surfing. Don't forget it's a netbook not a laptop. If you are into gaming and want speed this is not for you. Although the speed is fine for my purposes. I definitely would recomend this netbook"

"Just bought it, loaded Office 2010 this morning. I have a Lenovo for work. My expectations for this netbook is light work, some word, blog, social media and email. I think I can use the netbook on short trips but will probably lug the laptop on longer trips. Mostly I bought the brand Toshiba 'cause it's the only computer that has exceeded my expectations previously. Just a quick note to previous reviewer commenting on short lapse on sleep timer, you can adjust the elapsed time in the options under battery life."

"Bought this netbook as a second computer. I already have a Toshiba notebook for 3 years or so and the reliability has been good. The price on the netbook was attractive. I wish it came with 2 MB of RAM instead of 1 MB - I had to upgrade to get acceptable performance. And I wish it came with the backup software on a DVD instead of making me do the backup myself. But other than that I am very pleased so far."

"This is even more travel friendly than the 13" Satellite U305 I also own. It is lighter, has a full-sized keyboard and a nice, bright screen. Battery life is excellent and it can handle a lot of productivity software on it's hard drive. It needs an external CD/DVD drive (not included) to load software or watch videos, and the internal speakers are barely audible, so add-on USB speakers or earphones/buds will be helpful. This laptop gives you more than just web access and a multimedia platform; you can actually do serious work on it. However, it has only a single-core processor and is definitely not a gamers machine. It is easy and inexpensive to upgrade to two gigs of memory to get maximum performance. With two gigs, the speed seems more than adequate for every-day tasks including streaming online video. Two gigs also allows you to upgrade the OS to Windows 7 Professional if you wish."

"I have three other laptop pcs around the house. This new Toshiba netbook is the one I am using the most lately. My wife and I, in the evenings, like to watch TV and, each has a laptop in our laps also. We surf the Internet, do Email and, Social Websites during the commercial breaks. This little Toshiba is so small and light weight I hardly notice it on my lap. It runs very cool compared to the other laptops I have and, it is such a joy to use. If I need to read something that seems too small all I have to do is hit CTL and + to enlarge it, then when finished, I hit CTL and - to go back to the original size. You can also do this with the touch pad, I just like my way better. The screen display set at half brightness is plenty for me and, at that setting the battery goes an incredible 8 hours plus. My other laptops are ready for a charge after about half that time. I took this netbook with me on a trip recently and, it fit right in my carry- on and, it was so easy to use on the plane. It has only one small speaker but, that’s no problem for me. I always use ear buds and the sound is great. It is not as fast as my other laptops but then let’s be fair, it is a netbook, not a laptop. It does what it was built to do and, does it very well. I am very happy with it and I think you will be too. I did add the 2 Gig Memory and upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit version. It ran OK before but, now it has more functionality and, all the Windows Games are there. If you buy this netbook you will not be disappointed. The price is a real bargain these days. I hope you find this review useful."

"I've been looking at Netbooks for several years, but was put off by the price and had never found a keyboard that I liked. After I tried this keyboard I was sold, and then the price was right! I am totally in love with my netbook and love being able to get online on my porch with this Fall weather. I was pleased I could load my Quicken program so I can update my portfolio when on the road. Sadly, I use the "bill reminder" part on my PC, but cannot enter the split portion on the netbook; the screen will not let me reach the OK button. That's the only complaint."

"I bought this laptop because I needed a lighter one to carry for school. I have severe back problems, so the Toshiba Satellite that I have been using for over 6 years was too heavy. I love Toshiba. Quality, durability, and value are excellent! 5 stars for that. The only thing I don't like about my new mini notebook is that it comes only with Windows 7 Starter. I would rather have paid a little more for the full version than have to go through the purchase and update process with the Microsoft company. I really hate dealing with them! But, all in all, I love my new mini as much as I love my old Satellite Tablet!"

It is so small and portable that I am having a hard time keeping myself from using it when I'm not at school. It's small, my favorite color, does everything I need it to do, and that's without the memory upgrade. I take it on vacation, trips, download my home movie clips to it, check maps, local attractions, use my Facebook and YouTube among just a few things. It has never let me down yet finding hot spots, signing on to the Internet. At home I use it while watching tv or lounging around on the couch..it doesn't get as heavy and hot as a regular sized laptop. I even use it as a book reader. Love it! The battery life is good, about 5 hours of continuous use. I highly recommend it."

After a week, I upgraded it from 1gb to 2 gb of memory, and it somewhat improved the speed, but still not anywhere near the speed of my Satellite. "I purchased my netbook to replace an Acer Aspire 1 that I'd have for 3 years. This one is a bit larger--10.1", my previous 8.1" size is no longer available for any netbook. I'm very pleased with the performance, screen and graphic quality, and the keyboard. In fact--this keyboard is better than my Acer. Since I'm a touch typist who tries to be productive while using this netbook--that is important. I haven't taken it on the road for work travel--but will be the end of the month--and I have high expectations while I travel. I have high expectations of productivity for my netbook--as I use it the way many people use their tablet. However, I need great productivity than a tablet will provide--and personally, I wouldn't spend 3 times the amount of money for a tablet, when this netbook gives me all I want, and ease of use/compact and light weight travel options."

I haven't fully explored all the capabilities, but I am really impressed with the utility of this small easily portable package. I like the keyboard, the display, battery life, and particularly the small size and light weight. For my purposes it's much more convenient than a full size laptop."

"I researched Netbooks for a couple of months by visiting the big box stores and reading just about every review out there for 2011 netbooks and found the NB505 to offer the best value combined with standard features. LED screen is great, overall size and weight of the unit is perfect for travel, upgraded the RAM to 2GB when purchasing and it is fast, the speaker is OK but I didn't purchase this for sound, love the blue rubberized cover - only wish Toshiba carried this over to the wrist rest area. It is the quietest netbook out there - never even know it's running. My only complaint is that the right sided shift key is too short, I would recommend getting rid of the right sided control key - move over the arrow keys, move the page up/page down keys lower making just enough room to lengthen the shift key. Other than that I am extremely satisfied with my first Toshiba purchase."

Freeoffice, Picasa for photos, etc. The battery life has been good, and everything works fine. It would have been nice to have Windows 7 Home Premium on it, but Starter is sufficient for what I am using it for, not worth the upgrade for me."

Though sometimes background programs (norton) slow it down. Don't like the shiny border around the screen (my old satellite finnish was flat). The touch pad (mouse) is a little awkward, it seems to jump around when I'm using it to scroll with. Maybe I'm just not used to it. Over all I'm very happy would buy it again."

"I bought this netbook for 'light' home/travel use. It initially worked fine but within a few days started slowing down. It finally got to the point where it took 30 minutes to boot and 3-10 minutes to execute each command. I decided to restore it to the 'out-of-the box' state but received an error. Checking the error on the web it pointed to a failed hard drive. I contacted customer support and they opened a repair ticket...the netbook is in transit to the repair depot. I understand ANY computer is subject to hardware failure at any time, but after only a couple of weeks is very frustrating. I'll reserve final judgment until the unit is replaced (this could take another 3 weeks) but right now I could NOT recommend this netbook to anyone."

Touching the pad is perceived as a "transmit"and if the indicator is left for just a moment on an area, away it goes on a voyage of it's own. The keyboard is large enough for me to use even with my large fingers without making many mistakes. The memory is large enough and the processor fast enough so that I don't wait around much watching the circle spin - it gets me to 'hotmail' or 'google' fast which I like. The entire Netbook is so light that I barely notice it in my carry-on bag. The battery lasts a long time. There are 3 USB ports which is great. Great design also - I like where everything is on the Netbook. Keep up the great work!"

"The current tablets & books that have virtual keyboards don't work for old school folks who learned on typewriters. I need to rest my fingers on the keyboard. Until the development of practical folding keyboards and screens, this is as small as it goes. This net book also has full PC capabilities other than the CD/DVD drive (that I use only once or twice a year). For that the external CD/DVD makes sense. Future advancement needs technology that can replace the hard drive with large fast flash drives and manage the heat. Another positive is the ease of connection to the internet. While driving across the Midwest and using only available free internet service, I was able to hook up to the web at almost every truck stop on the interstate easily. Negatives are 1) an SD reader would be nice. 2) while adequate, the sound needs improvement. 3) BIGGEST PROBLEM: A hand held mouse needs to be marketed along with net-books. My arthritic hands don't do well on these mouse pad."

Alternatively, kingston part # KTT 1066D3S/2G which also is unavilable. Both these products are available online and i don't have Cr.Card. I tried almost all stores but failed to get the part leading me to complete disappointment. when I experienced its slowness, it led me to frustration and I began to think whether I bought correct netbook. I wanted to switch over to toshiba from other brands including intention to buy tablet as and when the same is launched. The company either should have arranged for supply of part with the store as consumer would not hesitate to buy for upgradation at the time of purchase. Can you provide solution for this? To break hard nut to switch over from branded product is not easy and once the switch over takes, the consumer should patronise using new co's product/s forever as a market strategy. "This is a netbook, purchased out of curiosity and to see how Windows Lite performed as opposed to the full version (MS Partner). Has nice set of features vs. price. Touchpad could use some redesigning. Speed is adequate but slow...had to add 1 gig of mem. but had to replace factory dimm with 2 gig chip...no room for 2 slots-bad $ waste. Should have upped to dimm 3 from 2. Could use 1 more USB and upped to 3.0. Nice size-pretty looking. needs stereo sound; one tiny tinny speaker. Mem card slot needs locking mechanism. Powerbutton awkward position, screen nice but bezel too big; could use extra inch of viewing space. Please note my recommendations and send me an improved version for review. On disability; can't afford new one."

"Upgraded from a Samsung N120. The Toshiba display is much clearer and sharper. The main reason for the upgrade was the faster CPU available but the Toshiba is much faster than I expected, especially after doubling the RAM to 2GB. Battery life is not as good, and the extended life battery is half the price of a new netbook. As with most netbooks, the fixed lens camera is difficult to aim.The speakers are good for such a small device. More memory capacity would be nice. The keyboard is easy to use, but the power switch is in an awkward position. Wi-fi is excellent, bluetooth would be nice to have built in. All in all an excellent coffee house and travel computer."

"So the netbook is good for browsing the web and doing very VERY minor activities. The main reason that I bought this product is so that it could be used to watch netflix on however it cant support it without the playback being very choppy. I thought that I would simply add another Gig of RAM, come to find out you cant even do that without upgrading the operating system based on the forums I am reading."

"Keyboard and finding refresh on the tiny screen has been frustrating doing letters/emails when the screen cursor from Hades jumps around and removes portions of my document and I cannot refresh or go back to have the portion of the document that has been stolen or gone into hyperspace returned ... so I end up re-writing messages 2 or 3 times - very frustrating. It could be easier and more user friendly ... like having the pgup and pgdn keys right next to the right shift button ... how stupid is that? Plus the "delete" button is miniscule ... the keys that we need and use alot should be large, well place and user friendly!"

"I like small computers because they are easy to use while lying down watching TV. Toshiba's mini-computer is perfect. The keyboard is easy to use, screen is clear and bright. Only concern is that my email interface within the web browser takes up several inches of screen space. But after adjusting Internet explorer and getting used to the limited screen space (I've had this three weeks), it is an acceptable tradeoff for a compact computer. Related to the smaller screen size of a mini computer is that some web site require a occasional horizontal shifting to see the entire site, if not designed properly. This is a tradeoff that I would easiy make due to the ease of web surfing while lying on my back watching TV. Some users may find the power cord sticking out the side a bit annoying becase this makes the computer's total occupied space several inches wider. The exterior is a slighly grippy material which means the computer and things placed on top of it when closed do not slide around like they would on the typical computer's sleek slippery surface. I had wanted a optical drive, but clearly this would make the machine notably larger. I've not run into any problems with the operating system being Windows 7 Starter (except that I can't change the background). I would highly recommend this computer for anyone doing light computing,and/or wanting a machine for lots of email."

"I am quite pleased w/the NB505 with two exceptions: 1. The power button is not as easily accessible as I'd like. 2. The touch pad and area surrounding it are more sensitive than I'd like, and things happen (e.g., new windows) when I don't want them to. I use it for class when I'm on the road and used it for notes @ a conference - worked like a champ. I have not be able to get the 8 hours out of the battery; but I didn't really expect to."

"This mini notebook is a great travel companion due to its decent standby battery life and features in a small profile. The keyboard is easy to use and built in features are great (webcam and wifi). The only downside (and it's a BIG downside) is windows 7 starter. It crashed and gave Blue Screen errors within 48hrs. It is bloated and slow and not meant for a resource constrained device. I would prefer XP, or Linux instead of this (my friend has XP on their NB505 and it is SO MUCH better). WIth windwos 7, I would not buy this product again, however with a different operating system, I would buy this again."

"I've had the laptop a week. So far it constantly reloads web pages (making doing work online difficult) in ie9. not sure if ie9 or laptop or both. Touch kepad below computer board and I haven't found a way to disable that while typing. So resting the butt of your hands below the key board makes typing efficiently impossible because the butt of your hand is selecting things and bringing you alllover the screen instead of just typing. Sometimes fast and sometimes slow. not sure why. So jury is still out. And price so far WAY too much for all this aggravation."

"After owning a couple of Toshiba laptops this is my first one of their net-books. I owned an Acer before and this is better in every way! I upgraded to the 2 gig chip and Home Premium 7 and haven't looked back. It's faster than any other net-book I've ever used and faster than some lap-tops. I bought it because carrying my 15.6 laptop to school with my books was killing my back. I find myself using this around the house to because it's so convenient and I can sit in a chair or bed and watch streaming video and movies without a hitch. "I especially love the NB505 due to its size and the fact that I can install Win 7 Pro with 2GB of RAM on the system. It has so many USB ports too, that there isn't a need for a USB hub. I can use it offline, as a backup to my offline data, or online as a quick access to a Wi-Fi point when I need Internet access but don't have much in the way of storage with me. Thus, the small footprint and quality of design is what really sold me on this particular model."

I love the screen; it has better definition and readability than my 17' laptop. It is also very quiet. Sometimes when a software operation is being executed the screen goes blank for a disconcerting length of time or doesn't give you much feedback that it is still working but that may be more the fault of the Windows Starter OS. "I love how lightweight this netbook is. I am an international flight attendant and I have to have a computer with me on my trips. I was so tired of hauling around my laptop which seemed to get heavier with every trip. My netbook is so easy to take in and out of its case when I go through security. I am still getting used to the keyboard. I prefer the HP keyboard of my laptop. I that find the shift button and the space bar don't respond well and have to go back to fix that in my typing. The sound from the speakers isn't great- very tinny sounding, but with headphones plugged in the sound is great. The microphone seems to work really well when I have made calls on Skype- no complaints from the people with whom I was talking. Even with 2 RAM installed, it is fairly slow to load when first turned on, but is reasonably quick once my browser is up. Overall I love this netbook."

I did not want a power computer, did not want to multitask. I was primarily interested in size, weight, and battery life. After having this net book for over a month, I can say that I'm extremely happy with its performance. While on business trips, I can access my corporate e-mail and log on to my corporate network from every location. I can surf the web without issue. I have an external hard drive with my personal movies to provide entertainment while I'm in the motel room. ALL work without issue. The biggest thing - I can watch movies for hours, surf the net for hours and all fits in a VERY light bag. THIS is one HAPPY customer."

"I bought this netbook to take on vacation and it really came in handy. Sometimes the key response seemed a little slow but I'm a patient person so it didn't really bother me too much."

"I use this net book for looking up stuff and e-mails. I use my desk top for more serious matters. The net book was inexpensive and easy to take places. The battery lasts a long time and a big plus."

"Bought to replace a two year old Acer One netbbok after the display began to fail. Chose because of price and Toshiba reputation. Bought to use mostly for travel (because of weight) but have begun to use more as home PC also. Battery life is very good (get 24 hrs. of normal home use) and does not drain when off and stored. Speaker is a bit weak and no stereo but head phone work great. Would be nice to have bluetooth."
