"This 505 was a birthday gift in Oct. from my husband and I haven't put it down since! It does everything I need it to do except play discs. It fits in my tote or a backpack. I've even dropped it a couple of times but nothing seems to stop it - thank heavens! Wifi is great at hotspots or at home.
I mainly wanted it to download and read books but saw no reason to purchase a book reader. This does the books and so much more for roughly the same price. Also, I don't have to hold it to read and can prop it easily to read in bed. I love how easy it is to adjust brightness, FN
My husband had a full size Lenova laptop which is cumbersome and heavy. The battery life on his is horrible and he had to replace the battery after a year. Even he is really impressed with the battery life on my 505".
My friend bought herself a laptop but when she saw my netbook, she wished she had purchased it instead. Although she also feels the lack of a disc player is problem.
The little plastic feet have lost the piece that keeps it from sliding on my lapdesk. We have glued them back in several times and that is the ONLY problem I've ever
had."

"I've had my NB505 for about a year now and I remain very pleased with it. I'm impressed by the long battery life, keyboard, bright display, relatively light weight, surface texture, and appearance. Startup and shutdown are fast, even with Windows 7 Starter. Wi-Fi is solid. I've added an inexpensive blue-tooth dongle for connection to my smartphone.
Although the screen is bright and clear, it is also the most reflective screen I've ever seen. Under bright office lighting or outdoors, the screen is mirror-like, making it somewhat difficult to view."

"My Toshiba NB 505 is the center of my office. It's light enough to take anywhere in my backpack, or even just a bag, and has enough oomph to stream videos, download whatever and work on your office documents.
If I had a complaint, it would be that I can upgrade to just 2 gigs of ram. Still, for a netbook, I would be hard pressed to ask for more performance for the price.
I hope that Toshiba will still continue to produce netbooks or something similarly portable in the future because they're the best deal on the market.
I've had my NB505 for over a year and have never regretted my purchase for a minute."

"This is the first Toshiba i have owned and is likely the last. I was first impressed by the small size and battery life thinking it would be the perfect netbook to take to school. after using it for a while it became annoying to use. the speed it way too slow, upgrading the ram helped a bit but not enough. i am usually a multitasker when it comes to computing but with this thing even running a word doc with nothing else seemed to bog it down. browsing websites was extremely slow even when on a good network. the last straw for me was when I got it out of my backpack and its case i found that the screen was cracked. the whole computer looks perfect, undamaged and abused but somehow the screen managed to crack. this is most likely going to be the last Toshiba I will own, not impressed."

Toshiba refused to take reponsibility for their inferior product. I took my losses and bought an HP. Now Toshiba lost me as a future customer."

"Very light, easy to carry. Turns on fast, saves battery. Eventhough it is supposed to have around 8.5 hrs of batery, mine only goes until 6hrs. But the camera is good, the speakers and the mic. It works very good, the only draw back I see is that it comes only with 1Gb, it makes it slow, Im buying 1 GB extra and see how it works. Toshiba, has been my brand since I went to University, always very good!!! and they have technical support world wide or at least in some countries I travel frequently!!"

"This has been the best little laptop I've ever had. I named it Blue, because of its blue cover, and everybody knows how much I love it. I've had it since September, and it has run just as perfectly as it ever has for four months now - on the exception of the time it fell off of my bed onto the concrete floor and I had to send it into Toshiba, but the customer service was great when I did. I don't like the urges to install Norton - I prefer Avast! - and some random pop-ups from Toshiba that I get, but other than that, it's not much of a hassle. Toshiba's eco-mode is nice as well, as it increases battery life. I'd like to warn that it comes with Windows 7 Starter, which doesn't have the options to change backgrounds, but I added the slide show gadget onto my desktop so that kind of makes up for it. All in all, I love this computer and take it everywhere."

"The tablet wars are still on going so I decided to get a netbook. Compared to other brands Toshiba provided the most features for the price. My first observation when using the netbook was that it was much slower than expected. I added 2GB RAM which gave it an expected boost in speed when multitasking. I run a dual OS with Windows 7 Professional 32 bit and Linux Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit. If you are not apposed to running Linux it works perfect on this netbook. I use this netbook for meeting after meeting that requires access to internet apps as well as spreadsheets, databases and other documents. In addition, I use this netbook for couch and bed internet browsing. Very good value!"

"This netbook is the perfect size for me. It has the same screen size as an IPad with a full size keyboard. I mostly do email and light word processing so the Windows 7 Starter system is fine.
I did my own RAM upgrade from 1 to 2 GB. It was extremely easy.
I love that this thing is almost totally silent. The fan rarely runs and when it does it is almost inaudible. And the bottom never gets hot at all.
I also like that Toshiba doesnt load up a lot of 'extra' programs. It is a pretty clean system.
Even the sound is acceptable for listening to news shows, etc. The camera gives an acceptable picture.
Overall I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone as a good alternative to an IPad. And at half the cost."

"This computer takes several attempts before it will turn on. I press the ON button and it starts to boot up, then turns off. I push it again, and it may -- or may not -- turn on. I often have to push the ON button a third time before it will turn on and stay on.
I HATE the WIN Starter 7 OS.
And less than 30 days after purchase, the notebook has a virus that wasn't caught/prevented by the installed Norton Security program.
I wished I'd bought the Dell notebook that was only $25 more and had all the same specs as the Toshiba.
I've never used the battery power so I can't say how good the battery is, but the review wouldn't let me ignore the battery life review."

"My wife purchased this Toshiba for me as a early
Christmas. I fell in love with it. I am writing my Memories and is great using Office Word. I up graded the ram to 2 GB and wish that Toshiba would make that standard. It is blazing with 2GB. I know it increased the speed more than double. I have owned 6 or 8 Toshiba laptops and have never had a problen. I have 2 big laptops that my wife and we currently use, but will say since the netbook I haven't used mine much. Overall and Performance would be a 5 if the 2GB memory came preinstalled. I think the battery life is about 6 hours as I had just over 1 hour left after 5 hours using word."

Its not fast but its not slow, I would say "average" to run programs. I like the weight and size, easy to carry along. I do travel so I find it a very good product!! I owned a i-pad but broke the screen when traveling and it was in the protective case. So I switched and I find this netbook is worth its weight and gold!!! Thanks Toshiba!!"

"I bought this to use while hiking so that I could get my exercise while having to be on call at work. It easily fits in my backpack. I am still trying to adapt to the keyboard, but otherwise it works just as I expected. The battery, so far, gets me about 5 hours of time -- more than enough for a 4 hour hike with only a few support calls.
What I'd like to change --
*the AC adapter needs to be L shaped --easily unplugs while using it during charge time
* built-in webcam adjustable somehow... When using on a desk it is fine, but when using it on my lap I can't adjust the screen so that the webcam shows my face at the same angle that I can read the screen."

"I am pleased overall with my Toshiba netbook but will comment on a few good, and not so good, features.
First, the display is very crisp and legible--5 stars.
The keyboard is full size and quite functional, but the keys are flat, rather than concave like my desktop keyboard, and it not as easy to touch type--3-1/2 stars.
The battery won't run the 8 hours claimed unless you use the Toshiba Eco mode, which dims the screen too much for me. In normal mode it will probably go 6 hours, which is enough for my purposes--4 stars.
There is no indent or release for the lid, so raising the screen is a bit of a pain--3 stars.
The top is a matte blue that won't show fingerprints and is tactile enough to 'hold' objects like an external mouse when I move the netbook around closed. Plus the blue color is very appealing--5 stars.
The speed of operation (particularly booting up) is a little disappointing, even after I upgraded to 2Gb RAM; not sure it was worth the cost to do that. In the standard configuration (1Gb RAM) it is slower than I would like (but this is probably typical of Atom netbooks in general)--3 stars.
Lastly, the price seems reasonable compared to the competition--4 stars."

"I bought this for travel, and after one trip it seems fine for the price and size. The size is perfect. I added a second gig of memory, and occasionally get a mysterious message telling me that internet explorer is struggling even though it's the only program open, but this doesn't seem to have inconvenienced me so far. When I have more time I probably will jettison some of the unnecessary programs packaged with this edition. I will say that the microsoft office starter package is worse than useless. As far as I can figure out, you can't expand the document to full window size because they want to devote a third of the screen to a sidebar with a constantly changing ad on it. I'm a writer, and can't function on 2/3 of a screen with something flashing at me all the time. I don't have the budget to buy the full Office, so I got by initially by saving documents in smart text getting to a full screen that way. I'm considering freeware of some kind. I had figured the starter package just meant I'd be missing some bells and whistles I won't need on the road--it was a serious annoyance to find that the word program was basically unuseable. Also, although I'd understood the battery life to be 8 hours, it's closer to 5--probably because of the extra memory, which makes me feel slightly misled."

I have used the wireless function while traveling and it's great. The performance is average, but it only came with 1GB memory, so I just recently purchased a 2Gig card which should give me the performance for my needs. It's an excellent laptop for the price."

"It's not a desktop, certainly ... and it's not a full-bore notebook or laptop, either. But then, it doesn't pretend to be either of those things.
What it IS is a very compact, reasonably powerful writing, editing, and communications platform that is so portable that it's hard to not have it around.
One of the best parts (to me) is the ergo factor --- I can type on this almost as fast as I can go on a full-size board. The keys are crisp, "springy," and tactile, and are real fingertip size --- not some little buttons that seem to be on top of each other.
Tons of FuNctions, easily accessed, and THREE USB ports (my wife's A-Ware lap only has one ...). A completely non-snag SD slot right under the mouse buttons --- perfect for ReadyBoost and immediate backup, without poleaxing on a flash drive. And more TouchPad options than you'll probably need.
The monitor may lack a little "snap," but it's not designed for photo-editing.
I would recommend that 2GB be offered right out of the box --- you'll probably upgrade immediately, anyway.
Windows7 Starter easily loaded my "legacy" apps (some from more than ten years ago), and FinalDraft8. The included Word Starter is absolutely usable for your next novel, too.
Fast recharge: I can write for three hours, plug in for lunch, and be back on the patio and be typing again at 100%.
SmartPhones may be good for "spectator" pc sports (google, mini-apps, etc.), but if you need to generate or edit a lot of text and communicate with complete facility, this is a pretty neat toolbox. (Two other people who have seen and tried it are getting them ...)"

"I have owned a NB305 and I find very little difference between that and the lower priced 505 other than some minor details, e.g. the power switch is no longer lit (not important), etc. Like the NB305, the speakers in the 505 are insufficient (volume) even when the sound settings are tweaked. If you want to listen to music or watch videos, external speakers are a necessity. With external speakers, sound quality and volume are fine. My only other quibble, being a power user, is that the screen resolution is 1024x600, while some competitors are starting to offer 1024x728, albeit at a higher price. If you're using the netbook primarily for word processing and other basic business activities, or watching movies, the current resolution is fine. For some graphic intensive programs, the lower resolution won't allow programs to even install. Again, though, a netbook is not intended for graphics work, although basic photo editing can be done without a problem. Minor deficiencies aside, I highly recommend the NB 505. It is priced low, is solidly built, and reliable."

"I bought this netbook because I wanted something very light and portable that I could use mostly for writing but also some web surfing and stuff. I did a lot of comparison shopping and ended up with this model. I am very pleased! One important feature for me was the keyboard, which is supposed to be full-size. It works swell! I also like its very clickety-clacky tactile feel that I haven't experienced with any other keyboard. I love the rubber lid, also the color, and the page up/page down keys. I am not sure about the specs giving 8+ hours of battery life. I am getting between 5 and 6. But this could be because I am running the computer at the brightest setting with no real power saving adjustments. I removed the 1 GB RAM and put in a 2 GB piece instead. I don't mind Windows 7 Starter; for me having a desktop image is not important enough to merit spending the extra dough on an upgrade. Best of all, this netbook is light as a feather! I just love the way it feels in my hand when I am holding it. Sorry if that's dorky but it's true! :)"

"I purchased this PC to use when I travel. The mini-notebook NB505 is lightweight and not as bulky as my regular laptop. It's great for accessing your e-mails, internet and games. The Wi-Fi works well on this unit. I do recommend that you purchase the 2mb memory card and external DVD-CD drive to load additional software and movies. Also, I use a wireless mouse over the touchpad on the notebook. Good value and quality for the money."

"I bought this unit on 4/4/11 & it stopped working on 4/11/11. I've been travelling a lot & have not had a chance to have the unit repaired. I bought a Toshiba product as I was told how reliable they were. One week of working is not my idea of a reliable product."

"I bought the netbook one day before going on a work trip to California. The day after I got to California the back lighting on the screen went out. It took me a few weeks before I was able to get somewhere that I could exchange it out. When I finally did exchange the computer the one I got had a bad battery. Finally I was able to exchange the battery and as of now everything seems to be working. I just hope that something doesn't go wrong when I am out in Afghanistan the next 7 months."

"This is my second netbook. The first was good, from another brand, but this Toshiba Mini surpasses it by far. For domestic and foreign travel, for its full-size keyboard, for the RAM space, for the speed with which it operates and for the battery life -- a great companion for my travels. YouTube and Web videos work fine, too, as does Skype. The price is also right!"

"Meets my needs as a travel machine. Not powerful enough as a primary machine, but nice for working while traveling. I added more RAM right away which sped things up considerably. I also installed Office 2010 and got rid of the starter Word and Excel.
Only complaint is the backspace key is slightly off and I tend to hit the = key sometimes instead. Keyboard is great otherwise."

"I write a lot. I have used an ibm thinkpad for many years, mainly because of its great keyboard. I wanted something smaller for travel. This NB505 exceeded my expectations. It's small enough to travel with, has a nice display and the keyboard is very comfortable. I found myself reaching for it at home as well, instead of firing up the thinkpad. Ordered through Amazon. Came with minimal software preinstalled. What was preinstalled (mostly Toshiba software) was worthwhile. Excellent price, excellent product. Thanks Toshiba!"

"I love the convience, being able to take it everywhere. It is very light and portable, I was carrying my other Toshiba lap which is small , but bigger than this, this one is so much lighter.
My only problem with this is when you have to hit the agree button on documents the screen will never scroll down . It took me a long time to figure out how to agree to documents."

"Fairly easy to use - extensive instructions that you can't access if you are having trouble but calling Toshiba works. Much slower than I expected but I bought a 2ram chip to put in that may help. Does what I want it to at this point in time. Will trade it for a droid soon, I expect."

"This notebook is a must have if you need something simple that will get you on the internet and use basic office products. Do your research, there is a lot of free software available online - no need to load it down with extra money. The computer is a great value, even with the flawed Windows 7 Starter."

"Haven't had it very long, but I do think it's great -- much faster than the HP netbook I used to have. Lot's of drive space, relatively fast, love the rubberized cover and the battery seems to last forever. Other features are comparable to most netbook models -- I just wish the SD slot had a positive "snap-in" lock. Other than that, no complaints at all. I added a 2G SIMM to improve Windows7 performance; helps a lot."

"I purchased this unit specifically for travel as I am in Afghanistan and my big 15 inch HP can be a pain to lug around, especially in and out of luggage at the airport. The Toshiba NB505 basically does everything that I used the HP for, just a little slower due to the 1MB RAM as opposed to the 2MB in my HP. I will rectify this by upgrading the RAM the next time I am in Canada.
Apart from that, it's a great little unit!"

"This mini notebook was purchased to provide PC needs for an upcoming trip to Hawaii. Did not need or desire to travel with a full sized laptop nor did I need all that power and functionality. In using it in preparation for that trip I have found it to be a fast, friendly machine. I am thinking about upgrading the RAM, getting external HD and using it in our summer location instead of dragging other PCs with us."

"I bought this machine for size, battery life and storage size - I got exactly what I thought I would.
This is not for someone who needs a main computer! But as a second machine for my travel needs (even if it's just from one room to the next) it is a nice alternative to a large, bulky laptop. The size is perfect for running around, small enough to fit in a large purse, etc and light enough to take to the store when I'm out and about if necessary.
Processing speed is slow and cumbersom for things as simple as Facebook games. However, with the right word processing tools I can finish my online schoolwork without any problems.
Not crazy about this Windows 7 business and removed the Windows office 1st chance I got to load the more usable Windows Office 2003 so now it's fit my limited needs very well."

"I have a lot of issues with this that I don't have on my laptops (pc and mac). It constantly disconnects from the internet, sometimes requiring a reboot to get it working again. It's slow, but I expect that from a netbook. Overall, it's not bad, but nothing to write home about."

"This netbook is really good with long-lasting battery, good performance, good features and a good price for an awesome netbook. the only problems are the RAM is only 1 GB and it has NO BLUETOOTH !!! I recommend that this netbook needs to have atleast 2 GB of RAM, and it must have bluetooth, and atleast 320 GB of hard drive. The only problem of Toshiba is they don't have many laptops with bluetooth. All the other companies have bluetooth in all their current laptops.. WHY NOT TOSHIBA ???........... Anyways this netbok is good and it will be better with a few more improvements"
