"Very nice laptop with nice feel on the keys. Very light weight. Fast start up. Quiet. Battery is decent for its size, but it says it has extended life and that is only for about 6 months of use. It considerably drops after then. Lucky to get 1.5 hr 18 months later."

"My professional life requires me to travel 100% of the time and drag my laptop with me; not only through airport, but consistently throughout my day. I was looking for a lightweight laptop that was easy to handle and provided me with the power and tools needed to get the job done. I must say; this laptop did it for me. It's the best. Highly recommended."

"I had a 6 year old inspiron and I was just getting tired of it being slow and not being compatible with updated software at school (I am a first grade teacher).
I just love the lightweight size, quick response and clear screen as well as the longer battery life. I almost bought another Inspiron but then I saw this laptop and I changed my mind. A happy new customer to Toshiba.
Very happy with it."

"I bought this laptop chiefly due to it's light weight. It has done well. I have had no problems with any of the software on the computer... I would agree with another review that there is too much software with the computer. I have much better resolution in Internet Explorer using the 'full screen' option. My only complaint is the poor quailty internal speakers (but they are light weight). Also, I agree with one review that the keyboard is noisy when typing. It sounds like my fingernails are too long, just the keys being depressed. On the other hand, you can hear each keystroke."

Power packed with great features such as durability, long battery life, above average processing, lightweight, with built-in optical drive, eco-friendly, with pre-installed windows 7 OS, face recognition and 4G WIMAX technology ready...the only thing that needs to be enhanced is the audio HW feature. Definitely a must have..."

"We do a lot of travelling and take our laptops everywhere to keep in touch with folks at home and to write daily reports on our where-abouts. This laptop is the right size and weight for this purpose, without being cramped in keyboard or monitor. We also store pictures of our travels and play games in boring hotel rooms, as well as use Skype to reach our son in China. He is a computer program developer and we always ask his opinion before we buy a new computer, then follow his advice. He has had several Toshiba laptops and swears by them for value for money as well as for what he can do with them. So we bought this one on his advice and are more than happy with it. We also have a Toshiba Satelite and are very happy with it for the same reason - value for money along with everything else."

"I have been using a Dell Inspiron 8200 I bought new in 2003 prior to going to college. This laptop was excellent and is still in supreme operational condition however it was falling apart - plastic coversing off, screen hinges broken (used string to hold it up attached to the fron the latop...
Finally, after much review and waiting for the perfect laptop I settled for the 705-35.
Likes: look (brushed metal), lightweight, 4gb RAM, 0.5 terabyte HDD
Cons: lacks dedicated graphics, screen resolution and quality is sub par for the advanced user. Toshiba BLOATware.
My first experience with Toshiba has been positive. I do not feel tha is necessary that they include so much software with their devies. I just want a laptop that is clean and hasn't been molested yet and a nicely partitioned HDD - windows 50GB, programs (50GB), bulk date (400gb)(music, video, photos).
Nice laptop for the average user and the masses. Would like an upgraded screen option! PLEASE!
Curious to see how it hold ups in 5 years."

"I wanted a machine that would perform two different functions: serve as a very lightweight laptop for travel and, at home, serve as my desktop when connected to a peripheral monitor and keyboard. This machine has excelled at both functions. It weighs less than three pounds, even with a built in DVD drive (very useful). It has a fine 13 inch monitor. It powers up and shuts down quickly and its battery life has been excellent. As a desktop it performs equally well. It has three USB ports and a port for an external monitor. It is quick and, with 160 MBs of memory, it performs all of the functions I have asked of it as a desktop. I am very pleased with this machine, especially since I was able to get it (even with DVD drive) for significantly less than other competitive machines that claim to be ultra lightweight."

"I bought this laptop primarily because of the strong ratings and the fact that it is one of the lightest on the market at 3.1lbs, good for someone going overseas. Though it works fairly well, I have found problems with downloading video or music from the web to include streaming video previews or highlights on ESPN through both my wireless router or a high speed DSL through the hotel: the constant buffering is killing me to the point that I do not even bother anymore. When I took it in to store, they said it worked there and that it was a config issue with this laptop communicating with the router or highspeed. Meaning the laptop processor is fine and the router is fine, but the two together are having issues. I also found the navigation button and mouse pad to be too sensitive, clicking on things that I did not intend to click on."

"I chose this computer because it was so light-weight but still offered wonderful features. I paid the additional fee for the store's set up and waited a couple of hours before I could pick it up. On arrival at home, I turned the computer on, and Windows would not open until the computer was restarted. For the next several days, the biggest problem I had was with the resolution changing continuously and without warning. I had the computer less than 3 weeks and Windows would not open/load at all. I returned the computer to the store where it was purchased and explained the problem. The store personnel told me they would exchange the computer, but this model was out of stock and had been discontinued. I replaced my computer with a different Toshiba model."

"Beside the very good price/performance of this laptop there is the low weight and relatively long battery life which makes it easy portable. Performance results in speed, finding files, memory storage capacity while the presence of a DVD drive enhances flexibility. The keyboard is comfortable. The ventilator should be less noisy. The three USB connectors is the minimum required."

"I love this laptop. It has a huge amount of function built into a slim little box that you can easily just stick in a bag and go. The battery life is such that you don't even need to take the power cord if you're not going to be gone too long. One caveat, though - the small screen and max. resolution preclude some features in Photoshop Elements 9, and there is no patch thus far."

Lightweight, not bulky
Includes built-in dvd drive (does burn dvd's)
Keyboard and screen are big enough for long work sessions.
Performance on this thing is excellent.
Fan is not that loud as some reviews state
Cons:
Minimum video graphics for gaming,
Gets really hot while gaming,
Speakers are somewhat suckish,
Battery doesn't last 8 hours more like 4 on eco setting.
(still not that bad though)"

"I own 2 desktops, an iPad, and 3 notebooks, including my Toshiba R-705, and I can honestly say the Toshiba is the only one that I use consistently. It is fantastic. It is very light for its weight because of its special magnesium alloy body. It is very easy and quiet to type on. I am a medical student and the most annoying thing is when people are whacking away on their keyboards in the library. It makes me happy to know that I am not contributing to this noise! The memory levels are fantastic and the i3 processor is plenty fast to handle pretty much anything. The screen is glossy but not to glossy so you can use it in a well-lit room or outside in the sunlight. EcoMode extends my battery life upwards of 6 hours, which for the size of the battery, is pretty awesome. The HDMI output, eSATA port, 2 USB 2.0 ports, my WiFi, built in Clear wireless, Intel's WiDi technology, HDD sensor and Facial recognition are all absolutely incredible and function flawlessly. Toshiba truly integrates all of their extras with the native Windows 7 environment.
Simply put, this computer works. Works very well I might add
As far as the drawbacks go, the keyboard is not backlit and the mouse buttons have a very loud click. the mouse button click is not an issue at all for me, however, some people may find this somewhat annoying. It could have used a dedicated graphics card but this is by no means an advanced gaming computer. There is no bluetooth also but I don't use bluetooth anything anymore so I don't see that as a drawback. The speakers are a little weak because of the placement of the battery but on a personal computer like this, plug in some headphones and you're good to go!
This computer was designed for productivity and mobility and i can honestly say that it is the perfect balance of the two. For the price, there is simply not a better choice than the Toshiba R705."

"This laptop, right out of the box, had a non-functioning keyboard. Need I say more? :-(
Another brand's laptop lost the screws in the bottom of the case, and had a display glitch.
It's not just Toshiba... laptop manufacturers need to do better quality control. Price/value assumes that a laptop works. If it worked as advertised then it might be a good value. I don't know about the features, performance, or even battery life because I've had to reset the laptop to factory defaults to diagnose a faulty keyboard.
Quality control is a must!"

"Wanted a laptop for travel. Came down to a Timeline X vs Portege. Chose Portege for light weight and optical drive. Comes with a very nice magnesium alloy case which so far has remained free of fingerprints. Software is more than adequate and screen is legible. Streaming video (using Netflix) works fine. Have not tried the Intel WiFi built in. Cannot say anything about battery life (at this time). Keyboard is good for a laptop of this size and trackpad and left and right mouse keys work fine. Price wise I'd say its a little expensive, especially for a small laptop. There seems to be a premium manufacturers are charging for 11-13 inch laptops. I'd guess this is the hot purchasing area and we are paying a premium for portability. Overall, a nice well specked laptop that is easy to use and easy to travel with."

"This is my first Toshiba product. I purchased this particular laptop because it was listed as one of the top five laptops reviewed on CNet.com. I'm happy with my purchase. I love this laptop. There is one issue though. The case could be a little stiffer. There is bending when lifting the unit by the end near the CD drive as the case thickness is only millimeters at this point. Also, do not lift the unit by the top edge of the monitor screen while open. This is an issue partly because the laptop is so light that that this seems like an acceptable way to lift it. The case simply is not strong enough to support such use. Portability and use is not an issue as long as you are aware of the delicacy of the case in these instances. Otherwise, the case is extremely resistant to scratching and other daily abuse. Just be aware that due to the extreme lightness there are slight limitations, which would not be limitations if weight had not been such an integral aspect to design. With great power comes great responsibility. After owning my Toshiba for over a month now, my 1 year old HP laptop looks like an old club. The Toshiba is sleek, slim, light, quiet and has a long lasting battery."

"This is a great computer for the size and weight. However, one thing that annoys me the most is the mouse. It makes a "click" "click" noise every time I click on the mouse. Because the mouse is made of hard plastic, the noise is more prominent than the two Thinkpads that I used before. I wish the mouse is in soft plastic instead. So if you are using your computer in a quiet setting (such as a meeting or a seminar), it can be quite annoying hearing the click click noise. Also, the mouse is very sensitive. Whenever I clicked and highlighted a document to open, it would suddenly go to a different document. You'll have to be careful when you click open a document."

"I have to say that this laptop is a very, very nice computer. It's fast, very lightweight, the screen is bright with great colors, the case is strong and not cheap plastic and the battery lasts a long time. I sold mine after 4 months! I sold it because I couldn't stand that it had a black keyboard and no option for a backlit keyboard which makes it very hard to see if the lights are even dim. I also don't like that there is a fan on the bottom of the comptuer, so if you put it on your lap you're blocking the fan the computer starts to get hot. But those are just my opinions and most people would be just fine with it. Toshiba, if you offered the backlit keyboard I would've totally kept that computer and I would've become a Toshiba fanboy. I really don't understand why there is no option any any of the Portege's for no for a backlit keyboard. I had no clue that Toshiba had such nice products until I bought this laptop."

"I wanted a laptop that was light in weight (this one is 3.2lbs) but heavyweight in features (500GB hard drive, 4GB Memory, DVD player, etc) with a solid reputation for quality, reliability, and service. First, I checked PC Magazine for ratings, features, etc. I didn't want to pay the price for an Apple Airbook, and the Sony I looked at was similar to the Portege R705 but more than $100 more expensive. I had a Sony laptop before and liked it, so was between the Toshiba and the Sony. However, the Portege R705 is much lighter. There are a couple of drawbacks: the battery life is definitely not the 8 hours that is listed, the speakers are 'tinny', and the keyboard doesn't feel as solid as the Sony's, or the Lenovo I have for work. I can live with these minor irritations, though. Overall, I love the R705, and definitely feel I made the right choice for my requirements."

"This is just the size and features I was looking for. No other brands could produce the laptop I wanted, I searched plenty. This laptop is lite weight and small in size and yet has enough screen size to make internet browsing as I want. With a new Intel processor, it performs well. This laptop has turned out to be a good portable computer. I am well satisfied."

The keyborad makes squeaky noise once in a while.
Speaker can be better, too.
But overall, I love my laptop!!"

"I was considering a Mac Book Air or something, but comparing the specs I couldn't justify it. This is very light and fast. Not as sexy as a MBA, but very productive.
Battery life averages about 4 hours, but i usually have it plugged in so my estimates could be wrong.
One interesting feature of the computer (and all Windows 7) is you can upgrade them on line very quickly because all the versions of Windows are on the hard drive. You have to pay to get a more capable version.
I wish it had more than two USB ports and these are 2.0 not 3.0 which in the last couple of weeks has become the after market standard."

"This is a great lightweight but powerful little laptop. Keyboard is a tiny bit smaller than a desktop but has the raised keys. So it is very easy to switch between the two machines. The only problem I have had was my friend accidentally disabled the mouse pad. I was not aware there is a button just above the mouse pad or directly below the space bar that switches from mouse pad to mouse or both. I had to use a regular mouse to change it back. But all is working now and I am VERY happy with this machine. I agonized between a netbook or laptop. But now I am so glad I purchased this."

"I love the fact that it is so light but still powerful. I only wish that it had windows 7 professional but that is a minor issue. Being able to turn of the touch pad when you know you will be typing for a bit avoids a lot of headaches that I have had with notebooks in the past."

"I bought this laptop in early December 2010. After using it for almost 2 months, I absolutely love it. I was going to buy an Apple laptop, but I was really impressed with the graphics, battery life, speed, and lightweight design of this Toshiba. Plus, it was much less expensive than the Apple. I highly recommend this product!"

"I purchased this laptop after looking for something to replace my Vaio. This laptop is very light and has a good battery (though nowhere close to the 8 hours claimed even on eco mode) so great for travel. But, the sound of the fan is just too much if you sit in a quiet room, which I do. Also, it will kick up a notch after a bit of browsing and this adds to the annoyance. I've had several laptops and never had this issue. It's a real shame, but I am returning it for this reason alone."

"I've been a Toshiba laptop user for over 6 years having this laptop be my second one as an upgrade from my Toshiba Satellite laptop. It's reliable, performance is great, perfect size and weight without having to sacrifice performance, and the price is unbeatable. I've had a Dell, Gateway, and a HP laptop and this beats them all."

"I was considering a Macbook, and did quite a bit of research, but then I decided before making a decision I would do a little looking around at what PC had to offer. When I found that this had the portability, almost twice the hard drive space, a better processor, and the same amount of ram at a lot cheaper I was sold. I love Mac O.S. but Windows 7 is growing on me and this machine has been great so far!"

"I needed a smaller and lighter laptop to carry to school with me but did not really want to sacrifice the power of the big boys. A number of people recommended the toshiba brand so I ended up buying this baby. This thing has good battery power, I've had 6 hours non-stop so far. The keyboard is good, the eco utility works just fine and it's an awesome thing to have an optical drive despite always having the power to download or use flash drives. I love how light and slim it is! Definitely a good investment on my part!"

"I spent about two weeks researching and researching before deciding on this laptop. I wanted something small, yet powerful, and at a decent price. My look ended when I found this laptop's predecessor, the R705-P25. But then, lucky me, I check the BBY website on last time on Sunday morning and find their is a brand new model hitting the shelves that same day, the R705-P35. The difference between the two is the CPU (this one has the 370M) and the WiMax capability that this one boasts. I didn't really need the WiMax, but for $20 less than the P25, I got this one with a better CPU. It was a deal in my mind.
So, after playing with it all day yesterday, I have to say that this little thing packs a punch. It is very light and portable, but definitely out performs most other 13.3" Laptops out there.
POSITIVES: Good battery life (read below), crisp little screen, decent sound, very light, has a DVD drive (some 13.3" laptops cut them out), WiMax, Intel Wireless Display, Can be used as a Wifi Hotspot!
NEGATIVES: Well, the only thing I can even remotely knock it for is the cooling fan on the bottom has a slight whine to it. The only way I noticed it though was in a completely quiet room, and then I could barely hear it, but it was noticeable. I really do not think this should deter anyone from getting it though because probably 80% of laptops out there would have the same problem (I speak from experience). There is also no Bluetooth.
The Battery is rated at 8+ hours. I believe this was done from within Eco Mode. There is a button above the keyboard for Eco Mode, and a nice utility is included to observe how much power the computer is using. In Eco Mode, I would believe you could get 8 hours, but in regular power, I would guess 6 1/2 at best. But even the regular power setting out of the box has limited the performance of the computer. I went into the advanced power settings and saw several settings that were reduced. After putting everything at maximum performance, you could get about 5 hours, which is still more than most laptops out there.
Overall, I am very happy with this laptop purchase. I see myself keeping this laptop for a long time, which is out the ordinary for me."
