"So far, I love this laptop. It's light, small, efficient, fast. My only criticisms would be that I could use an extra USB port and the touch pad clicker is a bit stiff resulting in a sore thumb. It would have been nice to be able to just click ALT and the number keys at the top of the keyboard to access accent marks instead of having to activate numlock (FN + F11) before using the hidden 10-key within the keyboard. Very time consuming. Otherwise, on the whole, I am quite satisfied with this laptop compared to my previous, one-year-old, cheap and problematic Toshiba Satellite C655-S5049."

"The unit is very light and is a no-nonsense workhorse. The inclusion of HDMI is a plus as well as the ESata/USB combo port. For such a small form factor, the unit performs just as good as any desktop unit. The built in DVD/CDRW is also nice considering the light weight. On the superlight laptops, you don't get an optical device included. I've been using this laptop for roughly 2 months now and have had no issues with it and am very pleased with it's performance and reliability."

"It is not an ultrabook; but it is almost as light and comes with DVD burner. One can get memory quite cheap, so memory is not usually an issue. (I now have 8gb) The problem is probably slow HDD. Could be 7200 rpm. (If you need faster go for an ultrabook) Keybord can be better. Overall, it is good enough for a second computer and for the price, it is excellent."

"I really like the size and features on this laptop. I travel quite a bit and was looking for a laptop powerful enough to multitask several memory intensive programs, but was also portable enough to be convenient to carry with me. I chose this laptop because Toshiba no longer makes 12" screen laptop."

"I was looking for an ultraportable with all the options: USB 3.0, DVD drive and at least a Core i5 processor. This was a perfect fit. The price was good too. I had enough budget to upgrade it, so I bought 8 GB RAM and an SSD. There are only 2 concerns with the laptop: (1) there is glare on the screen, I will buy an anti-glare film, although I do not know how much they can solve the issue; (2) my most important concern is that SATA III is disabled in this PC. I bought a SATA III SSD which can perform at >500 MBps but due to BIOS. I would give a 5 stars to features, only if the SATA III was updated.
Overall it is extremely lightweight and has all the ports you could imagine (USB 3.0, eSATA, HDMI, VGA). I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone who wants to have an ultraportable."

"The Toshiba Portege R835-P50X is a perfect example of what an ultraportable should be: Very lightweight (for a laptop with built in optical drives), relatively inexpensive, powerful, and equipped with enough battery life. I have owned my Portege for a few weeks now and I am really satisfied with it . This is a great computer. It is a perfect combination of speed, size, and battery length. If you are looking for something in the 13 inch category and don't want to spend a fortune, I don't think you could do better than this computer."

"OK... this is the first laptop I've owned that wasn't provided by work. Work laptops of course have all the locks in place and my current one takes about 8 minutes to complete booting. Everything is slow. My roommate owns a netbook and that is terribly slow. So I wasn't sure what to expect with the Toshiba Portege.
I planned to use the Portege with my telescope out in the field. The important features were at least 3 USB ports, fairly light weight, long internal battery life, decent size screen and indicator lights that were easy to block at night.
Speed and memory wasn't a big concern but I decided on a couple of upgrades here just because. I upped memory to 8 GB and swapped the hard drive for a Samsung 250GB SSD. This little laptop SCREAMS!
So how did it all work out? Perfectly. Running NexRemote and SkyTools 3 to control my telescope is painless. The battery life is long enough to get me through most of a night but I added an extended 9-cell battery so I have no worries. The weight, even with the 9-cell, is comfortable and the 9-cell actually raises up the back of the laptop which seems to improve airflow.
If I accidentally ran over this laptop with my truck I'd run right out and buy the exact same thing. For my purposes, I can't think of anything else I would need."

It has a sleek design, is lightweight, has USB3.0, 640 GB HDD, eSATA port etc. Its cooling system works great and it has a very good battery performance. There are few minor setbacks like no back-lit keyboard and not-so-good-webcam. But overall, its a good product."

"Although the computer itself has been great, the AC adapter is already failing. It appears that there is something wrong with the AC adapter box itself as you have to tap it so that the correct connection is made before it will charge the computer battery. This has become progressively worse and I fear that I'll have to purchase a new adapter soon."

"I love this computer - it is super light yet has great configurations. The battery life is also amazing. I have had a couple of issues as well though - there is something wrong with the screen light. When it falls asleep (which to conserve battery life happens very quickly) sometimes when you wake it up the screen resolution is bad and I have to switch it to normal mode and back to eco mode to be able to see well. It's not too much of an issue though and for how thin and light the computer is, you can't complain. Overall great machine."

Incredibly lightweight, partly at the cost of screen size, but my aching back (from my old boat-anchor-heavy Lenovo) is more than willing to have me put up with that. Besides, like most lawyers, I will be installing a large-format monitor to plug into this delighfully lightweight pc when I'm in the office."

"The processing speed is incredible. Having had to share a computer with four people with a Celeron processor I was in awe. It comes with the "best" web browser Google Chrome which happens to be my favourite and the only browser I use. Having worked with Toshiba laptops for a very long time I knew that this had to meet my standards, but it far surpassed them. The Windows 7 operating system, which came on it, does all that Microsoft claims. I've downloaded from the very convenient Toshiba App Place. I've used the face recognition, while a truly awesome application, is not very reliable once you get a hair cut. The speakers are fantastic, although they lack the full sound that the bass gives. The accessibility is phenomenal, especially for people who download plenty from the internet. All around, a very good machine that will please new users and professionals alike."

"My first brand new laptop. Used various Thinkpads and Dells and appreciate the low weight plus portability. Lugging a typical 5 pound unit is a chore. Runs mostly without cpu fan so it's nice and quiet.
A few improvements: two finger scrolling is hard to control, cut down bloatware, chicklet keys a bit small and wished the keyboard was back lit or had a built-in led light."

"Weighs as much as a netbook but with plenty of horsepower for doing work on the road. Mine was preconfigured as an i5 with 4 GB RAM and a 5400 rpm HD; a wee bit more speed would make Dragon NaturallySpeaking work a little better. But it works OK, as do my other office applications. Consider this over an iPad if you need something for document production as much as document review."

"Overall, this is a good laptop. I'm glad I purchased it as I've used it a lot.
Still, it has its problems, which are noticeable. Much of my recommendation is based on the fact that I could not find other options in the same price-zone.
What I really wanted was a MacBook, but I didn't want to pay the money, and my business needs would not permit my buying one.
PROS:
- Battery life: I used this on a flight to Europe on "eco-mode." Wow. It really lasted a long time, and I still had batt. life left. I was using MS Office for a few hours. I was not watching movies.
- Weight: This is a very light computer. It's not an air book, but it's rather light.
- Speed: Seems pretty fast to me.
- Screen: Good graphics. (I am still trying to get used to the new size.)
- Temperature: It seems to stay rather cool. I can't say I'm a gamer though.
CONS:
- Keyboard: The keyboard has an odd layout. I keep hitting the "home" button when trying to use the "backspace" or "delete" buttons. That is the most annoying thing so far about the computer! Also, there is no backlight for keyboard. Come on, Toshiba!
- Proprietary Toshiba Software: There is too much of this running in the background. I'm still trying to figure out what I can take off to increase speed.
- Mouse-Pad: Scrolling commands on the mouse-pad work for me only sporadically. Also, the mouse-pad buttons are really loud. I read another review that commented on this and I thought, "What a goofy thing to comment about," but that person was right!
- USB Ports: There are only two USB ports. There is an eSATA port, but for my needs another USB would've been better.
- Hard Drive Noises: My hard drive "squeaks" at times. It might be just a quirk of mine though.
- AC Adapter: It's the traditional heavy brick with two cords. When in the world will these other companies make an adapter comparable to Apple's? Ugh."

"My first Portege got me through classes with the swivel tablet and being able to hand write notes. My new one is an update that will carry my for a while longer. Great specs, super lightweight, and with a SSD installed, this machine is a speed demon. The only problem I have with it is the chipset(HM65) allows for sata III speeds but sadly has been disabled...with a unofficial (per forums with Toshiba) could be updated via bios when this model has the option for a Sata III SSD installed. Other than that, I love it, and now hope for a bios update, would give more stars if they were available at that point!"

The i5 processor handles multiple tasks easily. If you a need business travel system (netbooks are too weak and high-end laptops too expensive), then this is the box. However, I can confirm reports that the keyboard is flimsy and squeaky - for a heavy user like me this is a significant shortcoming. "Wanted something with more performance, larger keyboard, and larger display than a notebook while keeping the weight down. This Protege is the answer. Weight is 3 pounds, battery life is excellent and the keyboard fits my big hands. One criticism is the clicking of the keys as you use them. Everyone in the room with you will know you are using your Protege. Another is the preloaded Toshiba software. It takes up a lot of space. Not being a techie, a lot of it is still on the computer. But, we love the weight and size for the traveling we do and the full features we get. It seems to be constructed well too. The larger screen means we both can watch a movie on it while on a plane. So I highly recommend the computer if you can live with the 2 problems I mentioned."

The only negatives are that the speakers are weak and tinny(but I got it for work and not for watching movies or listening to music, so that's fine), and I was under the impression that it had a multi-touch pad, but mine does not. "This is a great performing little laptop, which is exactly what I was looking for:
* Small, light-weight form factor for portability
* Fast 2nd gen Core i5 processor
* Plenty of fast DDR3 1333 MHz memory for basic tasks (e-mail, Microsoft Office, playing DVDs, Internet, etc.)
* Professional design
* Durability
* Plenty of connectivity options (3 USB ports, one of which is USB 3.0, 1G Ethernet, SD card slot, eSATA/USB combo port, b/g/n
WiFi, HDMI port, Intel wireless display)
* Super-bright LED backlit display is definitely one of the brightest screens I've ever had on a laptop
* Good battery life
* Versatile optical drive
There are a few minor things that I would say make it less than perfect, but not enough to warrant a ding from 5 to 4 stars:
* The screen is very reflective, so I have to find the right position to hold it in so that I am not bothered by reflections
* The touch-pad "tap" is very sensitive, but that can be easily customized in the Synaptics device settings, or disabled entirely
* Opening the laptop requires 2 hands because it is so light, a concession I am pleased to make
* The chiclet style keyboard takes some getting used to, and can feel a tiny bit cramped, but that is a function of space available on such a small machine, and was a compromise I purposefully made
* I don't understand the omission of BlueTooth or the antennae needed even if you wanted to upgrade
All in all, this is a great laptop for those in need of an ultra-portable laptop with good performance and at a good price point."

"I love Toshiba and I think they build some high quality laptops, and for an average user this sweet little machine is a gem, I guess I am officially a geek though because I have a few quibbles.
The wireless card is still a bit on the low end. Intel's BGN card fails to see the 5ghz range at all, and it makes it a problem for me when I want to troubleshoot client wifi issues, I need to have a full spectrum card, and this doesn't have that.
The internals are kind of a design mess, I mean don't get me wrong this thing crams everything into a very small package but that was accomplished by cutting corners rather than good design...The DVD tray is only a tray and not a fully enclosed drive. The Fan is kind of questionably useless but this laptop is the first I have ever seen where the fan cools both sides of the motherboard. There are more wires than circuits inside this thing. Everything is connected through wiring which is unusual.
The trackpad isn't the best in the world, which is kind of odd given that the technology is better than it has ever been. It causes chintzy movements at times even with the most up to date synaptics drivers.
The software Toshiba comes with is probably the best in the industry there is a lot of junk but the value added package is really kind a cool tool for modifying bios level settings from the OS. The Eco utility is actually the best in the industry, but I don't really care about saving battery life.
The facial recognition/ camera application and the update service and the other wifi notification programs are garbage though.
I would like a backlit keyboard, but overall the keyboard is very nice to type on.
The construction from the outside is top notch, and I think everything screams a solid build for a laptop. I would like to have seen a more solid hinge pins and a full copper heatsink as it was originally advertised.
The power is incredible especially with an SSD I have it down to about a 6 second boot up.
The video card is more than adequate for my needs, this isn't going to win any horse races but I like that I can throw a game on it if I want to."

"I love this laptop. It has everything I need--it is light, pwoerful, and has the kind of battery life that I have only dreamed of in the past. I was tempted to get a macbook air, and am glad I got this machine instead. It is the best single computer purchase I have made, and there have been many."

"This thing is fast, light, has great battery life. Mine boots in about 31 seconds and I get about 6 hours of use before needing recharging."
