"After some research this was the best choice 1.Needed dvd drive 2.Smallest possible screen with dvd drive 3.As light as possible (magnesium case) 4.As strong as possible (magnesium case) 5.Energy efficient yet fast (new Sandy Bridge i3) 6.Max memory (8gb) 7.USB 3.0 8.Reputable manufacturer I use Toshiba's for 16 years now and they have always been excellent laptops so for me it had to be a Toshiba and this Portege also just fit the bill so it was a nobrainer. Although I was reluctantly willing to consider another brand if it could deliver the same on paper for the same price but also there Toshiba beats the competition. This Portege must be selling real good I suspect. It ticked all the boxes and that for a very good price. After a month's use all I can say now it was the best choice. Great screen, speed, battery live, touch mouse pad keyboard. Now without dvd I will get the next Toshiba coming out end this year for even greater portability. My only suggestion is maybe reduce size in this series Portege by having a slot instead of tray loaded dvd drive. The previous Portege had it, was it cost or tech problems why there was a tray instead of a slot in this version ?? The new Tosh would be great and still super thin with a slot drive. The only other suggestion is backlit keyboard and maybe maybe all of this in a 12 inch??"

"Promised my grandson a laptop for his high school graduation. He picked this one after reading consumer reports. I have a Toshiba 17" I love mine and he loves his 13". Very suitable and durable for a college student."

"Slim and very light, it is very user friendly. The keyboard is really soft touch. Display contrast is good and the sound system superp. Its Wi-Fi notification symbol while booting is unique. Brilliant Silver coners add to its beauty. Will highly recommend it to folks who travel a lot for business presentations."

"I liked this laptop right out of the box. The surface texture minimizes fingerprints and slides easily on the skin. The keyboard is led backlit so working at night is now a joy. The Harmon/Kardon sound system is reasonable for a laptop - to really hear fidelity you must use earbuds, but that is not unexpected. Startup was easy and performance has been good; no problems."

"Purchased as a computer to take with me as I travel on business and vacation. I enjoy using it so much that it has taken on much of the responsibilities of my home desktop Dell machine. The only complaint is the literature described this model as having magnesium blue case....turns out it's plain black plastic. One reason I chose this machine was the durability of the case since I travel with it. That was a big disappointment!"

"Excellent value for this laptop, which is lightweight, sharp screen display and user friendly. Though new to Windows 7 software, the provided assistance, pop ups, etc. have made my transition easy. Battery life is excellent. I love my new laptop!"

"i was skeptical of power and speed in this size. Also i have the I3 and 5400rpm hard drive...i have to say i've had no reason to complain about it being slow. Easily used the battery for +6 hours and if you manager your screen brightness and close it when you are not using it you'll get good use out of it. The only negative are the speakers, which i wouldn't consider to be that important. Metal case is nice, weight is awesome, price is right."

"like: weight CPU power Intel Graphics (so I don't have to deal w/ nVidia) battery life. price dislike: glossy screen lack of Linux support size. The new Porteges seem slightly too large- larger than the M100, R100 and A600, which are about perfect for me."
