"Have had no major problems with my X505-Q860. Windows and all software installed without issue. Have had none of the overheating problems mentioned in other reviews. This computer has the best built-in webcam of any computer I have ever used and works very well on Skype. Speakers can sound good with tweaking of SmartAudio settings but are never loud enough for me. My 2 year old Toshiba Satellite has better sound. I think this could be driver issue. The keyboard flexes slightly when I type on the right half of it and the plastic cap that covers up the space next to my arrow up key was glued in slightly crooked. The keyboard functions without problems so I am not concerned.
The screen is beautiful as the the whole laptop is. It is a heavy monster, more suited for desktop replacement than anything else. I wish it had the backlit keyboard and Blu-Ray drive for the price. I also wish that it would be factory configurable so I could have ordered it with more RAM. As it is, I must buy bigger RAM and eat the cost of the RAM I already have. I would have rather just ordered it with 8 GB from the start. I will say that I have never had any problems with the computer bogging down with any software I use, but I am not a gamer. There is a place for a second hard drive with the proper connection soldered on the motherboard. I love this computer and would buy it again, although I might be tempted to pay slightly less for the nearly identical 18.4 inch Satellite."

"Love this laptop. Even though it's one of the bigger laptops, I love it. The photos to edit are sharp. The 17" screen is great for these tired eyes. Easy to move about for it's size. The battery last 3 hours which I do wish was longer. Have no regrets purchasing this laptop."

"This laptop has 4times the power of my old one and I love it. I'm a gamer and to finally be able to play with the graphics all the way up with no lag is amazing. The volume buttons next to the keyboard is a cool idea but I accidently turn the sound off when I go to hit the "~" key and I have small fingers. Other than that little thing its a great gaming machine for the price. I spent weeks looking at different computers and couldn't find a better deal. Bottom line: It's a BEAST and any gamer would love it!"

"This is a great desktop replacement. I do agree with other reviews about the weight, but that is to be expected when you have so much hardware. I would not call this a "laptop" because keeping it on your lap for an extended period can be difficult. The battery life is average but it can be improved with the ecoUtility and other settings. Of course, the face recognition does not work every time. It is still somewhat new in technology and you have to make sure there is enough light and nothing moving in the back ground. It is still a cool feature. The side panel “play” buttons are touchy and I still have not figured out if the volume button is actually working. (That is just me not spending enough time with the unit, yet.) I would recommend this computer for anyone wanting to do some gaming or low-mid level graphics work. (CAD, Quark, etc.) I got this unit so I would not have to keep kicking the boyfriend off his computer to do school projects. I am very thrilled with my purchase and suspect the unit should carry me through for at least the next 5 years."

"It is a bit big but I knew that when I bought it. I do wish that the native resolution were a bit higher on the model I bought. I also worry a bit about overheating with the way the air intake vents are positioned on the bottom of the laptop. I use it for video encoding and some 3D applications and when it gets cranking I try to sit it in my lap on my legs with the vents positioned so that as much air gets pushed through the system as possible.
One other thing I had problems with was reloading Windows 7 from scratch - it wouldn't work. Luckily I made a restore disc set before I nuked so it wasn't a big issue. I just really, really prefer clean installations to preinstalled systems. The problem I had was after the first reboot - the rather cryptic error message was that Windows installer had to stop because of an error and that I needed to reinstall Windows so I could reinstall Windows. Something like that, but yea, cryptic. Win7forums and Google searches pointed it to an upgrade issue, though I was doing a complete nuke of all partitions so I'm not sure why it wouldn't work.
Other than that, solid product. The price point was just right for this system as a decent desktop replacement."

"My son and I are avid gamers. The Xbox 360 is all well and good, but I wanted a good gaming system for PC games. After shopping around a bit, I opted for the Qosmio X505-Q860. We have not been disappointed.
The Qosmio is a great desktop replacement for gaming. Yes, it's pretty large and not as portable as other systems, but you simply cannot beat that 18.4" screen for computer gaming. I set out to buy my son a system, but I was so impressed with the Qosmio and the price, that I bought two: one for my son and one for me.
So far we have installed Supreme Commander 2, C&C: First Decade, Unreal Tournament III, BioShock, Dungeons & Dragons Online and a host of other games, and they all run great. We've sunk many hours into Generals and UT III and haven't experienced any issues with these games. Thus far, we have thoroughly enjoyed our Qosmio systems.
The Qosmio is not without its issues, though. It came with a copy of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2. Unfortunately, this game would not run on the system. I believe it was a compatibility issue with Windows 7 64-bit.
Yes, the Qosmio ships with Windows 7 64 bit. Windows 7 has been great so far; I can't complain, but it is kind of odd that Toshiba would ship a game with the system without having tested whether it would actually work or not.
My only other complaint is that I was unable to update the video drivers with the latest release from Nvidia's web site. When I attempted to install drivers straight from Nvidia, an error message stated that no compatible device was found. This is a big concern for me. If the system really has an Nvidia card installed, I should be able to directly install Nvidia's drivers.
Instead, I downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Toshiba's site. As long as Toshiba supports this system, I won't have any real complaints about this, but I do want to be able to run any of the newest games available, so I hate the idea that I'm dependent on Toshiba for drivers.
Like Dell, Toshiba's systems come pre-installed with anti-virus packages and other software. For the most part, these programs have been unobtrusive, but I usually wipe my systems clean and re-install the OS because there's nothing I hate worse than software bloat. Too many systems come with loads of useless programs that do nothing but eat system resources.
I have not, however, wiped our Toshiba systems. So far, they have performed well, and the pre-installed software has done nothing more than nag me to upgrade. I will at some point uninstall everything that nags me, but I do like the direct link to the Toshiba support forums.
For anyone who buys a Qosmio system, you should know up front that you need to download updated drivers from Toshiba's web site. You can probably run with what's on the system, but to avoid issues with games, you'll want an update.
Even though I have not done it myself (yet), I would also recommend wiping the system and installing Windows 7 clean from scratch if you can. I haven't done this and have had no problems, so it's not necessary. I just prefer a clean Windows install on my systems.
On the whole I am immensely satisfied with my Qosmio systems. They perform great, and I got two for what it would cost me to get one Alienware system of comparable build."

"This laptop is fantastic. I bought it for the 3d capabilities for my cad programs at work. It smokes every other desktop in the office. As an added bonus, it is great with movies and games too. I have yet to really cause it to flinch.
The sound rocks also!
My only complaints are that the processor and video card get HOT! But with the back vents, I don't notice it (unless I'm playing a game on the couch with the computer sitting on my lap).
I also REALLY don't like the position of the buttons on the left side of the keyboard. I am constantly brushing over them and opening my media player or muting the volume. It is just not a very good place for the buttons - there is plenty of room above the keyboard."

"Needs more ports, e.g., USB 3.0, an extra eSATA, and 2 additional simple USB 2.0 ports; also the back panel must be used for power and internet connections to reduce sides usage congestions. 8GB as top RAM needs to be increased to 12GB. Hopefully, the internal cooling system has been designed to function effectively without being overworked. Also, a laptop with such a large screen, by default, can not be expected to have a long-lasting battery life. In general, a very good laptop for an i5 processor and the current market price."

"Nice computer, huge screen which I like. It is heavy though, and bulky to take places. I use it as a desktop replacement so its fine for me. Seems pricey to not have Microsoft office installed permanently. (only a trial version!) Battery is as expected, maybe slightly above average, internet access is almost as fast as my home pc. Nice bright screen. Speakers sound good, but DONT get loud enough to hear over surrounding noises. Overall I like it, just wish it had more software. Trial version of Norton, trial version of Microsoft office, for the money, full version was expected. Nice Toshiba extras like Toshiba bulletin board, and Toshiba reel time are nice."

"I decided to replace my 3 year old desktop gaming rig with a gaming laptop. My budget did not allow me to buy the fastest/top of the line laptops on the market so I looked for a laptop that would hopefully meet my needs without 'breaking the bank'. This Qosmio X505-Q860 is working beautifully and I'm glad I chose it - the best value for the money for a large screen/gaming laptop - after comparing with the other major brands. Am able to play the latest graphic intensive game: Battlefield Bad Company 2, however only on medium graphic settings - not high. I believe if I had spent the money to get the top of the line model with the Intel I7 chip the performance would be better but 'you get what you pay for' and I have no complaints.
As others have written, the machine is heavy, the display is beautiful, the sound is awesome (although I wish the volume could go higher). Dust is easily visible on the product but this is easily cleanable. Have been using it for about a month. I have a mouse and keyboard plugged in because I prefer that to using any laptop keyboard/mouse. Overall I highly recommend this computer but if you want to play the latest, most-demanding computer games (NOT games like the SIMS which is not peformance intensive) then you should get the faster CPU if you can afford it."

"Finally I've found the ideal desk top replacement with an 18" display, great battery life, full key board and the power to drive the most demanding applications.
As a desktop replacement I understand that the unit will be some what heavy. However, I have the best of both worlds because of Qosmio's portability and the power of a desktop all in one unit! Qosmio's good looks will draw plenty of attention, but the performance speaks for its self.
Very happy with my perchase!

"Pros- This laptop has just about anything a gamer would need to game. Its got a huge screen that anyone could love. It runs all my games on high. Battlefield Bad Company 2 runs on high, World Of Warcraft on high. The i5 runs perfect so far. I haven't compiled any videos but I would think it would do fine. The wireless is fast with the new n tech. I have a n tech router and I get my full 2.5 MB/s wireless which is nuts.
Cons- the control keys are on the left side of keyboard and I hit them sometimes. kinda annoying but something you can adapt to. It gets really hot on the top above keyboard not that its a problem it just causes me concern. It's kinda heavy but I knew that when I was buying it. Some games don't work as well on battery power as they do when plugged in. Other then that its really a great laptop for the value. Good desktop replacement!"

"This laptop performs very well for the cost. It plays games like Team Fortress 2 and Starcraft 2 at max settings with no problem. For a performance laptop like this, portability and battery life are obviously going to be hindered. I was surprised when I found out the battery life is decent. It can last just over an hour without being plugged in. Obviously at 18.4 inches and over 10 Lbs. this laptop is not going to be very portable. The one complaint I have is the buttons to the left of the keyboard can kick you back to the desktop in an instant, which is a big hassle when playing games. I would put them at the top or to the right of the number pad.
Speaker quality is also very good. Songs and games pump out at a good volume and the bass is really good. Overall a good laptop with a somewhat minor problem."

"Issues;
Finger Prints: Every little touch, smudge-smudge-finger print. It just looks dirty all the time, very annoying.
Closing; It may be a strange issue to some, but I dislike that it doesn't click/lock in when I shut the lid. So when I walk with it, say while carrying it on it's side, the top will flap open and makes me feel unsettled.
Sound: I don't know if it's just mine, but the sound goes up and down/ in and out and makes me sick. It only happens though when I play music; movies haven't shown any problem. I tried changing the setting, and have yet to find a way to fix it; possible driver issue.
Side buttons: only one issue with the side buttons. When you press the media button, it turns the computer on. I had no clue! So when I opened it up the first time, I wasn't ready to turn it on (just wanted to look at it for a minute, get a bit of a feel for it) well, felt over the sides and BAM! System starts, freaked me. And it makes it harder to clean, since it just turns on each time I brush over it.
----
Besides a few issues, it's over all a nice system. The video is amazing and it works smoothly. Yes, it's big, so finding a case has been a challenge. But the tech support is great, and if I can fix the sound then all together it's a good buy."

"It's a 64 bit single core processor and it falls in the middle of the pack of such prodessors for speed. I think you can get up to eight cores on a 64 bit laptop chip but at the same time you can also get a 32 bit Atom processor which I believe is not a lot better than a Pentium IV you could have bought eight years ago.
Battery Life is great, about two and a half hours on maximum power consumption. The video is very good. I have not used the audio.
The shell both inside and outside is too shiny whch means that it shows handprints too easily.
It comes ready for Wireless or Wired broadband but it doesn't come with a phone modem so if you ever use dialup intenet you will need an external modem.
Still and all it's a good laptop for a student home user or business person who doesn't want to play extreme games and wants either a large screen by laptop standards or a number pad."

First I will discuss the negatives, such as they are. First this is a big laptop. I will have to buy a new carrying case as it won't fit in the one I already have. Second it could have used an extra USB slot or two. Lastly it is very shiny and thus picks up a lot of fingerprints. It might have been better to go with a more matte finish. Honestly, this last criticism is the most important criticism that I have.
But this is minor in comparison to the great things about this laptop. The full keyboard is nice and the large screen is quite nice for gaming. I used to have a separate monitor attached to my old laptop, but it was completely unnecessary with the Qosmio laptop.
Other great features are the I5 processor and the Nvidia 360M video card. Not to mention the 500gig hard drive and the Windows 7 64 bit OS.
I used one of those boards to help with the heat generated from my old laptop. But to my surprise, there is minimal heat on the underside of the laptop. There was no problem having it rest on your lap without discomfort.
I got this laptop primarily for gaming and it delivers. It was so cheap that I was able to get a new 21" LCD monitor for my desktop computer.
This is a great laptop!"

"At first glance of its looks and specifications, its really great, i mean, this machine is a monster. Thumbs up to its make.
but I REALLY did not appreciate that it WAS NOT BUNDLED WITH A SINGLE INSTALLATION CD. Yep, you have to download it all, the OS, Drivers and Utilities, etc.
Another thing the size and weight itself, it would have been better as 17inches, and the weight, including the power adapter is a really burden when carrying it around"

"This is my 2nd Qosmio. I bought the F25 model in 2005 and loved it. So I wanted to get a new one. I love the style of these laptops. My other one was more of a media center pc with a tv tuner and remote control, but this one is a much better gaming machine. It can play any modern game easily. Don't be discouraged by the fact that this one "only" has an Intel i5 processor and not the i7 like the more expensive models, because it is still a great processor. It is comparable to a very high end Core2 Duo.
My only issue with the laptop, is more of a personal preference issue. I miss having a touchpad that was surrounded by a lip where it would make it very easy to find the borders of the touchpad fast for scrolling. This one is flush with the surface which makes it take a little longer to find certain areas on the touchpad without looking."

"The LT is great and the expansion bay for a second hard drive was the big seller to me. I'm waiting for the ssd's to come down but it will be there should I need it. Screen is the biggest I've seen and is very good for video and games and there is no lag due to video latency. The speakers are good but pointed wrong. I built little sound diverters to make them throw the sound forward instead of straight up in the air and the sound is totally different. All in all this machine is great for all my needs and will do so for quite a while."

"The overall computer is a nice product. Quite heavy, but when you factor in the size of the screen, it's hard to not have to expect the increase in weight. The screen offers a large 18.1" widescreen view with a bright and clear picture. Very good resulution I might add. The battery life is not the best, but again with the size of the screen, it dramatically reduces the battery and fast!! I have had a few issues with the computer freezing up over the past three weeks. (Around 10-12 times, actually.) I have to restart and then it will open in Safe Mode with the keyboard then being unresponsive. I have to restart once more and then it will work. Overall, I am very pleased with the computer and would buy it again, however, I don't think I would pay this much for a laptop again. I think that the price is slightly high for the product."

So I loaded office on it as well as Prince of Persia. Ok I think that's when she froze on me. So I turned it off and restarted it again and this time I got a message on the screen NO OS (operating system) for the non geeks Loaded. It also happened on the 2nd one as well. It is a very nice looking laptop but I will tell all of my friends to be leary of this laptop from now own. Maybe I should have gotten the one with the I7 instead!!!!!!!!!"

"I've been putting off buying a laptop because I wanted it to do exactly what my desktop can and the Qosmio X505 does it even better. Runs Eve online and STO with higher framerates than my desktop. For those looking for something small, this is not it. Very big rig , made for gaming. Only disappointment was lack of LED backlight on keyboard (guess you only get it with the i-7 processor models). Battery life not bad with the 12 cell at about 3 hours playing online with maxed out graphx."

"I personally enjoy the laptop a great deal. Large screen, 10 key, great layout. A few complaints would be the keys are not back lit. Also the battery life could be a little better, but with as much power as it puts out how can you really complain? The laptop is also quite heavy and does get considerably hot when it is plugged in, between the weight and heat you can hardly use it as a "lap" top."

"I opened my laptop like a xmas present. It looks really good. Sounds great for a laptop. I wish I could have afforded the backlit keyboard and bluray and tooth. It does show fingerprints easy, but that is why it looks cool. I just clean often. The 1st one I got would freeze randomly right out of the box. Tech could not figure out, wanted to fix it. I called toshiba direct and they sent a new one after they received my old one. 2nd one has been pretty good, so must have been a bad apple. 2nd one did overheat once after 8 hours of gameplay on civ IV. I propped up on back of laptop stand to let more air thru and no problems since. Graphics are awesome. When 1st one had a problem I tried to make it crash by playing 2 games and pulling up and using many programs. It did not slow done. Big imrovement over my 2005 sattelite."

""This laptop is an amazing desktop replacement.
I had previously build my own computer and it was top of the line about 3 years ago. I was in the process of looking up parts i wanted to buy for my desktop when I came across this. I decided to look into "Desktop replacement" laptops cause I am rarely home anymore with college and what not. I went for the lesser Core i5 without the blue ray for money reasons, and this thing hasn't disappointed me yet. Its fast, graphics are great, and overall its a good computer.
It received 2 stars for battery life because, well with its i5 with the new 360M graphics burns through a 12 cell fully charged battery in no time while running games. But this is to be expected which is why it is labeled as a "Desktop Replacement."
I can carry this thing anywhere, if i feel like lugging the 15 pound monstrosity (computer is about 10, and the power supply is a monster at about 5 pounds its just about as big as the Xbox 360's, but its a lot easier then packing up my desktop, monitor and all, and going to a friends house. It fits snug in the Toshiba gaming backpack which is also a great thing to to have with its millions of pockets.
I play a decent amount of games and the graphics haven't slowed a bit, runs Wow at full, Fear 2 at max, and many other games Ive thrown at it. Never has it froze or dropped below 25FPS (anything below 24 is when it is noticeable by the human eye)
It does get a bit hot while running games but its to be expected, nothing to serious though. The vents are out the back, so no more sweaty hand or hot drinks from a side vent, and the fans are decently fast.
It got an overall 4 because of the battery, and because of the material the casing and keyboard, and well the while computer is made of, its very reflective and attracts fingerprints like nothing I have ever seen. But the fingerprint thing isn't really an issue to me cause when you play games your not really looking at the computer, as long as your screen is clean. The Q860 DOES NOT have a back lit keyboard, if anyone is wondering. But with a nicely back lit 18.4 inch screen there is no use for back lighting, so that's not an issue.
Comes with a lot of useless software, i never uninstalled any of it though because with 500gb HD and a slot for an extra one i didn't need to. Some of it has even come in handy if you believe it.
Overall this is an amazing desktop replacement and i would recommend it to anyone."

What I like the best is the key board layout and feel. The looks are awsome and uniquely different than any thing else out there you know its a performance computer. "This is probably the best laptop for the price. Any "i-#" processors is great. You don't even have to get the i7 if you're a casual gamer (like myself). I've had this laptop a week and everyone is utterly jealous of my 18.4 inch monster. They couldn't believe how cheap it was for the specs it had. My fiance's XPS laptop (4 years old) didn't even cost half of what this Qosmio is selling for. Buy it! Don't even second guess yourself. Take it from a person who searched for a gaming laptop for nearly 6 months. I am sincerely happy with my purchase. No buyer's remorse whatsoever! This is truly an epic laptop. It's certainly a steal.
Be sure to invest in a good warranty plan. An expensive laptop warrants the best protection."

"The X505-Q860 is a beautiful machine. The display is gorgeous, and the performance for the price is exceptional. But the BIOS needs an update (lockups on boot) and the Nvidia drivers are immature (display interrupts with graphics driver warning). The only real negative is the small keyboard. Toshiba should have not added the music controls on the left side and should have increased the keyboard to a full sized one."

"Pros
-Size is AMAZING (could also be a con, due to lack of case selection available)
-Speed - The Core i5 430M (2.26) with Turbo Boost is nice, outperforms my Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4).
-RAM - 4GB DDR3 is expandable to 8GB.
-Graphics - The GeForce GTS 330M GDDR5 1GB is an excellent mobile video card.
Cons
-No restore discs shipped with the system.
-No back-lit keyboard
-No Bluetooth
-Screen is too reflective, very hard to sit on my shaded porch and see the screen.
-Touchpad seems a little choppy. But I use my A4Tech mouse 95% of the time anyway.
All non-issues to be honest, but some people might find these a problem
Other
-The glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet.
-The media keys are a little irritating, I just disabled them, no biggie.
-I did a LOT of research before I chose this. My next choice would have been an Alienware M17x, but this is a much better buy.
All in all, this is a magnificent system, Excellent cost to performance. You wont find a better gaming system at this price."
