"I'm a computer science student that has to do a lot of commuting. I love this laptop for these reasons. It was cheap so you don't have to stress about other people using it, and if you break it, its not the end of the world. The laptop is mat black that is all go no show. It has totally held up to my abuse, every day I jam it between about 30lbs of books in a back back, then throw the backpack around all day. Oh, and the lack of features is a good thing, most laptop features are pointless and a waist of money (colored led lights, wifi toggle switches)."

"I got this laptop for my dad since I wanted something that had a 15" wide screen for better visibility and bigger keys at a low price point since he needed something for Web browsing, email, and basic word processing. The Toshiba does well on both fronts (and that I have had a great experience with 2 previous Tosh's), though the keyboard is non-standard so I (and my father) took some time getting used to it. The screen looks a little washed out (low contrast), but at that price-point my expectations weren't too high. The audio output from the speakers is sub-par, so external speakers are required. The other complaint I have is the gesture-based touchpad which is very jumpy to say the least. But this has more to do with the touchpad drivers than the hardware, since I find the same issue with my other Tosh with Windows 7. Otherwise, the laptop is a great value for money with lots of hard-drive space, good feedback from the keyboard buttons, and zippy performance. After disabling a ton of factory Tosh software from start-up, the boot-up was very fast (faster than my much more capable Tosh with 6 GB RAM). All in all, I am satisfied with the laptop and would recommend it for its value - while pointing out the limitations mentioned earlier in the review."

"My first laptop was a Toshiba Satellite that I used for almost 10 years at work everyday, all day.When it died I had to replace it fast! I found this one at a great price. I have used it for 3 months now and bought another one for my office. We use these machines over 10 hours a day without a hitch. I am thinking about another one for home so I don't have to travel every evening with it.
Battery life is great (around 5 hours+).I like the keyboard and number pad. Good size screen and graphics.
Speakers and only 2 USB ports are the only down side."

"I was looking for a good base model laptop for internet usage and light word processing/spreadsheet work. This laptop fills that role very well. It has a good processor and can take some RAM upgrades if my usage becomes more demanding. So far I haven't tested the limits of the battery, but have gotten around 5 hrs so far out of it with surfing and it wasn't completely dead before I charged it. A couple improvements would be a 3rd USB port on the right side and a larger trackpad with a more definite border."

"I am an OTR Truck Driver and wanted a laptop to watch movies, check email, and surf the web. This laptop is great for that, it is fast and durable, and has a long battery life, up to 5 hours at times. The only negative that I have found is the speakers are pretty weak, so I just bought a wireless headset and it works great."

"biggest problem i have is getting used to the shorter screen and smaller windows. the curser pad is off center which throws me off alot as are the buttons. but works fine just need to get used to it i guess. had a dell 1501 for 6 years and screen was a full inch taller."

"I really like the speed of this laptop. I like having a number key pad which speeds up putting numbers in. The keyboard is easy to use...has a nice touch and spaced well. The one big gripe I have is I use it a lot for playing fast paced games... the mouse pad has a slide curser up/down and left/right. I'm sure this is good for speed in moving the screen; however, it is not marked where you have to touch it to move it back...I have lost countless games because of this mousepad...very frustrating.
It is an overall great laptop with the one flaw I have noted above."

"This Toshiba was purchased at a close-out price, which was still considerable lofty for it's features. It has done well with several different media streaming features running simultaneously. I've only had it for less than two months. It does the job required but should be bundled with back-up discs for pre-loaded features, as well as Virus/Security software for lifetime of unit."

"Yes, I agree that the main problem of the laptop is its speakers, compared to its predecessors which had harman kardon speakers. And I also agree with its cheap plastic design... It has only 2 usb ports which is lacking. And yes, the CD tray is close to its power plug which makes it a distraction when opening the tray. And I don't get it, why make the RAM to 3gig only, they should have made it 4gig at once..
Overall quality, the laptop may not look competitive on the outside but its quite powerful on the inside. For a budget laptop, it has the right specs for everyday use. It is not intended for gaming hardcore but it can support most of the new games in the market..."

"This model works very well and is well worth the monies paid for it. I am having a problem with what IE 9 is dispalying on the screen at present, but everything else is great and hope to have this issue resolved soon.
The number of USB ports is the bare minimum and could due with a few more. I do not like their placement on the left hand side of the device and would prefer them either in the back or right side. However, this does not effect the machine's overall performance which is great!"

"This is our second Toshiba Satellite - the last one is now about 7 years old -- and still running fine! The old one traveled all over - dropped from my backpack (spilled out) and keeps on ticking. The performance of the old computer compelled me to purchase the new one of the same family. (I'm happy with my choice.) This new laptop is much lighter - runs much cooler - and the screen is wonderful. My Only disappointment is with the sound. The old Toshiba had a Hardon / Kardon Speaker / sound system - and it was fantastic - I just didn't realize how much differece it made to the sound. The new one - you need external speakers or headphones/ earbuds to hear anything - without holding the laptop up next to your head :) ... BUT - as a computer - it shines - and I will stick with this brand until proven it has changed for the worse. I would recommend without reservation."

"This laptop is so slow and locks up all the time. I hate it! I use this for log books for my work and sometime it takes so long to compltete any thiing reguardless of what program it is I have to change my time on my logs to the next time slot. Which is in 15 minute segments. I took it back to the store I bought it at and they ran it through test for over 12 hours just to return it to me saying there is nothing they can do. The problem is in the software that came on the unit. WOW!! Not impressed at all!!"

"Where the power plugs into the computer is BAD location right next to DVD. When pulling in/out DVD's and when the computer is plugged in the DVD tray always hits the power plug so we have to adjust the power plug up and out of the way."

"Very smooth running laptop, although I upgraded the RAM to allow for more heavy duty programs/games to be run. Comfortable keyboard, good screen size and easy portability. Only complaint is the speakers as they're rather low on sound even when turning it up all the way, but I use headphones all the time anyway so this wasn't a concern. Would have enjoyed more USB ports and an HDMI out but otherwise don't think I could have gotten better value for my money elsewhere."

"Good price. Good speed. Good battery life. Love the separate number pad on the right. Lightweight, thin profile. Nice size screen, good picture, no glare. The only negative is the built-in touch pad mouse. It picks when I don't intend to, it's a bit awkward to use. Oh, one more USB port on the right would be nice and the ac adapter plug is a bit close to the cd drive door, it gets in the way a little when inserting a disc."

"My previous laptop was hitting the end of the road; I needed to act quick to assure continuity with my business-related computer use. And it had to be inexpensive. The identical model with an AMD CPU was cheaper, but the salesman steered me to this model with the Intel i3 chip.
First, the downside: at this price, the speakers are terrible. I listen to alot of music on computer, and I'm now using my headphones when possible: they sound much better. Also, there are only 2 USB ports, which might occassionally be a small problem, but is correctable.
On the good side, the battery life of the Satellite is as good as it gets. I frequently use my computer away from home, and what a luxury it is to not have to bring in the charger and find a place to plug in!
Toshiba battery life is probably best in class.
Even though it comes with only 3 MB RAM, I find performance good enough to run graphics (Photoshop, design work). Besides, the price of RAM has come down. The system loads quick enough, the colors are good enough.
With Toshiba's good name, I feel confident I've made the right choice to carry me well into the future."

"I needed a computer for the basics: internet, music, word processing, and picture storage. For what I paid, I feel like I got a machine that offers that plus a little more in terms of processing power and speed. Screen clarity is great and the keyboard is comfortable to use. Also, it doesn't heat up to ridiculous temperatures like my old Mac did.
The one unfortunate downside: The external speakers are pretty punny. The sound is weak, and a bit on the tinny side. You need to plug in headphones to experience your music. :("

"The keyboard is difficult to get used to but having the 10 digits on the side is great. This is my second Toshiba laptop and I don't ever use them with a battery, just at home plugged in. Good size screen.

"I used to be responsible for laptops at a large military command (350+ laptops) and I always bought Toshiba. I have to say, after all these years, Toshiba's still got it. If you buy one of these satelites, you can expect to buy your next one for the same reason I did: it's so old that even though it still works fine, it's time to upgrade!! Happy computing."

"Pros: Price, weight, speed, & performance.
Average: Battery life & portability
Cons: Speakers are absolutely horrible! My old toshiba satellite (4 years old to be exact) had better speakers than this model. Also, the 1.3 megapixel webcam records in very terrible quality even in its highest settings. Lastly, there's no sound dial anywhere on the laptop; you have to click the speaker icon on the lower right part of the screen in order to change the volume."

"Laptop was a gift from a family member to help me and my wife get our degrees. Did not like the fact that one of the programs we will use THE MOST is Microsoft Office and it is not a full version. Now we have to go online and spend $500 dollars to get the tools we need to complete our schoolwork. Also cannot stand the pre-installed "big name" antivirus products. They do not work and the hackers are always ahead of them. Uninstalled it immediately and downloaded free stuff that I have been using for years on my desktop computer (and I've NEVER had a virus or been hacked). Other than that, not too bad and will function as a 2nd computer so my wife and I don't have to share machines."

"There were several reasons for purchasing this Laptop, number one being proven reliability. I have owned other Toshiba products including a notebook computer and have always been very satisfied with their build quality and performance. I use this current laptop as a hub for several mobile devices while at home or on the road. and also as a general purpose computer. Just wish it had one more USB port. Great laptop at a reasonable price."

"This is the first laptop that I've owned that was brand new and all mine. So far I've really enjoyed how user friendly it is and have had no trouble navigating the system (had to get used to Windows 7, though). The battery lasts as long as the specifications said it would, so no issue there. It is not a super fancy machine, but that is what I wanted. It holds my music, pictures, whatever with no problem. I look forward to using this laptop for a good while."

"Fast machine compared to previous generation dual core laptop. Windows still slows it down, but the CPU speed helps get it going. I wish that there was HDMI output and USB on other side of machine. Wish the SD card reader accepted the whole card. These two features were standard on a similarly priced HP machine. Speakers barely adequate, need external speakers for group presentation. This is good work machine, not great for home multimedia."

"This is the second of this model Toshiba I purchased. The first one was for an elderly client who was undergoing brain surgery and wanted to play internet Bridge.
What we found was the size of the machine, the full keyboard and the large keys were the most attractive at first. However, we soon learned the Satellite was more responsive and adaptable that our desktop and we immediately upgraded the memory and hard drive to allow us more capabliliy as we do C A D and job estimating as well as use of Microsoft for home and business and photo and movie editing, and usually several of those demands in a given day.
We are less tired at the end ofday than with our desktop.
The small size does not apply to the working parts of the computer meaning keyboard and screen.
The only limitation we have found at this time is the small number of USB ports (2), but we carry a 7 port extention when we wish to use accessories that require that type of access. This allows us to use our external hard drives for the various purposes including the depth of file storage we need on the run.
The blue tooth for the wireless mouse limits available USB connections to 1. (I haven't taken the time to read the specs to see if there is an internal blue tooth that could be used for the mouse and other devices.)
And, just to drive my wife mad, there are sufficient simple games included with which to dabble when her back is turned and business is driving me over the edge.
The reason, I did not give this an excellence? Simple, It is like Avis. It gives toshiba a reason to try harder."

"Outperforms my desktop in every respect. The slot for the camera chip was a pleasant surprise. A wireless mouse was added because I can't get the hang of the touchpad, I can use it when away from home, but mouse makes it even better. The flat keyboard takes some concentration, but it's just a matter of adaption."

"This laptop has an amazing battery life, usually 8 hours. It runs very quietly and I can hold it for hours without it getting hot (or even warm most of the time) against my legs. It's the best laptop I have owned and the price can't be beat."

"I purchases this lap top for my granddaughter's sixteenth birthday present. I own another Toshbia model and had found it to be a great lap top so purchased this model for her. She used it for 2 weeks and the hard drive went. It is now out for repair. Very unsatisfied. Store would not give us a new one claiming that I had only 2 weeks from date of purchase to return it. I purchased it two weeks prior to her birthday so we lost those first 2 weeks. Two weeks and the hard drive crashes? Unacceptable."

"I have hesitated purchasing a laptop for a long time due to the "cramped" feeling when typing, especially with the touch pad just below the space bar. This model not only allows the user to turn on & off the touch pad, but also has a 10-key that is important to me as an accountant. It is light weight and the battery last longer than other brands I've experienced. It could use another USB port or two and the speakers are hard to hear, even with the volumn all the way up, but otherwise a very nice product. Easy set-up and strong processing speed is evident from the first time turning it on and doesn't diminish a lot with added programs. All of this for a very affordable price."

"I just want to say this is my first laptop and Toshiba and it has been a terrific experience. It has met and exceeded my expectations. To be able to talk and see my grandchildren has been the most rewarding experience so far using the built in mic and camera and to Skype with my family in MI has been great. "Seems to be able to handle everything I throw at it. Does some weird stuff that I don't like. If the cursor hovers over something too long, it will select that link. Screen zooms changes a lot as well. I need to check the settings to figure out why."

"I like how it's nice and sturdy. its performance is pretty fast. everything functions pretty well. the only things I would say negatively about it is the webcam isn't too high quality, and I also feel the number key pad on the keyboard is a little excessive. but it's lightweight and I do like the widescreen. Something else weird that happens is that the plug needs to be jammed into the outlet even though it's not shaped weirdly or anything... I'm not sure why. I love the long battery life."

"This is my 3rd Toshiba laptop. My first, bought in 1998, still runs even after being dropped numerous times.
As this one is an inexpensive newest gen i3, I was astounded by price. While the keyboard so far seems a bit flimsy, one more gig of ram would have been nice, the cost for this laptop far outstrips any minor inconvenience."
