"This laptop performs pretty well as far as speed, memory, etc. However, the Windows 8 OS that came with the machine is absolutely terrible. Not intuitive whatsoever, it takes about three times longer to figure out/perform normal functions than it does on a Mac, or even an earlier version of Windows. I may try to convert the OS back to an earlier version at some point, since working with Windows 8 is extremely inefficient."

"This was a pretty cool laptop until after a month of using it. The system turned on but their was no display on the screen. The fan would get loud & then quiet & that's all that it would do. I recommend not getting this specific product!!!!"

"This laptop is very versatile. I like the fact that it has usb 3.0, has an HDMI input. SD card reader. It is not too heavy. The battery life coould have been a little better. All in all it seems like a good quality product that I will enjoy for years to come."

"This is not Toshiba's greatest product. Nor, is it one of their most expensive. Performance is good. Screen resolution is very good. Sound is awful. Speakers are tinny and if you are going to watch video or listen to music you'll want to add external speakers.
Would I recommend this model to a friend, only after I advise them to be sure what they are buying. I would suggest an actual hands on demo before purchasing.
Would I recommend Toshiba to a friend, most diffidently.
OBTW, I'm not a big fan of windows 8. ."

"I researched this laptop considerably before purchasing. Like other reviews I saw and agree with; the sound is not of high quality at all and the battery life is so-so. If using this for documentation & such the battery life is sufficient. But if used for gaming, then no. There is no warning if your battery is about to die. The system just shuts down. The keyboard has nice square keys for those with sausage fingers and at times can be touchy. The usb ports on the right side are inconveniently placed too close for those who use a mouse with any plug in devices. Too easy to keep bumping into what is plugged in. Screen size is decent as are the graphics. Comes with an abundance of apps to use. Set aside getting accustomed to Windows 8 this laptop is awesome! Size/wt is great for travel and definitely great for those on-the-go or students. You won't be disappointed this this one!"

"I love this laptop it is the 3rd one I have had. The only problem I have with this is probably windows 8. On the start screen where I have my icons not the apps the icons keep getting smaller and I have not found out how to make them larger again. Otherwise this is a great laptop for the value I love it!"

"I bought a Sattelite which died within a month. The same model replacement died within two weeks.
The one I bought four years ago needed the hard drive replaced, and it took forever for Toshiba to agree that was the problem. I am totally off the Toshiba brand forever"

I thought with the Intel I3 processor and 6GB memory, it would be faster than my my current one, but instead, with almost nothing on it (software wise) it is much slower. Windows 8 is garbage. "This is my 2nd Toshiba Laptop. 2 negative differences in design, touchpad and DVD drive. The touchpad has a rough surface and requires a lot of pressure to make the computer respond. The button to open (eject) the DVD drive is not accessible without lifting the front of the laptop."

"I have multiple students working on this laptop daily. So far, so good.
The keyboard is functional, works great, but is not tight and high end like. The keyboard gives alot when pressing and could be upgraded. The keys are flat, not as beveled as some may be used to, but again, very functional and has held up well.
This 17.3 view-able laptop is loaded with Windows 8, boots extremely fast, and has provided an outstanding tool for my class. It is very light, durable, and we are happy with the speed of the 6gigs of ram.

"The morning after I purchased the laptop, it refused to accept the Microsoft password that had to be created before anything else could be done. I told it to register with Toshiba later. Suddenly, I'm getting emails from Toshiba welcoming me. It went back to the store and I ordered an Asus with Windows 7. My life is now back to normal with my laptop"

"I have had trouble with the mouse pad from the beginning it just wouldn't move many times. Became stuck and or had to continually fight it.
I took it in and there was some downloading work done and it became better but still not always functioning properly. I ended up buying a mouse to use."

"Good laptop for the Money, fits the bill for me. Have had toshiba products before, accidentaly broke my last one, so I bought this one. More Memory and power and better battery life then most laptops in this price range.
Only short coming is the sound system, its ok, but my last toshiba had a better sound system, but it was a much more expensive computer."

"Found it to be very easy to operate from the start. First time of windows eight, but looked at a few tutorials on the web and managed to pick up on it with out any major problems. Purchased a mouse at Staples, that made moving around much easier as I am use to using a mouse. All the features of the Toshiba laptop are convenient and the keyboard is quite nice. All in all a great buy."

"I thought I could just go to this laptop and it function the way my home computer does. Well it doesn't. I can't get a program I work on to fit the screen to see the boom of it, I don't like having to go to the side top and play with it to bring out a tab to be able to go to another tab to shut the thing off. I can't figure how to use tiles that are on it and I take it into homes to do interview questions and they have to think I am incompetant although I have been a visitng nurse for 5 yrs and a RN for over 30 yrs. I chose Toshiba because I thought it would be the best to work with. I need lessons. Help does help me so now what. "Confused""

"I bought this computer because I need to scan, send emails, type letters & print envelopes, keep copies of documents, and play computer games and look at online videos and everything possible. Maybe I need more time but it seems Microsoft controls the computer. I keep trying to delete their power but when I turn it back on the history is still there. I want to control my computer not Microsoft. I have not read the entire manual but when I do I will find a way to delete the control Microsoft has over this computer without deleting everything if it doesn't come to that."

"I bought this item about two months. It is more than I expected. Faster than previous ones I have had. Good quality. At first it was not comfortable Window 8, but it is OK for me now. Speakers are good but its sounds are not too smart, so I bought an stereo speaker which is used attached to the same laptop very cheap, but with a good quality, good sound and portable to use everywhere. I recommend this laptop to anyone who is looking some good. When the time goes by, I'll see if I will have the same opinion. And you have to consider, that beside what I have written, the experience of what we receive with the same item we bought is not going to be always in the same way. ."

"I purchased about a month ago. I was unhappy with Windows 8 and came close to returning. However, following surgery, I had lots of laid-back time and was able to learn all of the functions with the included Windows 8 manual in Book Place. Once I learned all the shortcuts, I absolutely fell in love with this laptop. It's fast! I find myself using the desktop more than the apps. I guess the desktop app just seems more like using Windows 7. I like being able to add, move, and remove apps to my liking. Some great free games are available for download. The speakers could be a little better. However, I really don't listen to music anyway. I would definitely recommend the C55-S5194 Satellite laptop to others."

"I purchased this laptop for financial management of my business and it is great for that. I have it connect to a high speed scanner to archive all my paperwork and it processes the files fast. I use it for on-line banking and even with the best firewall and real-time anti virus/spyware software running it is very fast. Excellent screen, good colors and easy to read. I really like this computer. One issue, the sound is very poor, you need external speakers to listen to music."

"Still trying to figure out how Windows 8 works and so far DO NOT like it.
I like the battery life. I do not like all the apps included and deleted many of them. I do not do the social stuff. I use my computer mainly for my profession.
I like the memory and hard drive capacities. I have a very large e-book library that I use professionally.
I like the brightness of the screen but the speakers are tinny.
Lightest weight laptop I have owned.
Ask me in 6 months and I will better be able to evaluate it."

"Very good value laptop, performance is good, display is nice. & keyboard is usable. No major flaws hardware wise and the HDMI port comes is handy. Looking for an everyday laptop for browsing and light office, all in a low cost unit, this one fits the bill.Unfortunately, the flaw is the horrific Windows 8 OS. "The Toshiba Satellite C855 Lap top works fine, is fast, and meets my everyday needs. A little tough to get used to using Windows 8 with the new landscape and terrain. The speakers and sound is very lacking in quality. Overall I am please with the purchase, and it was a fair price for what you get. I bought two of them, one for a friend, and after seeing it, and working with it a little, I bought one for myself."

"It took me some time to figure out how to keep the computer from automaticly starting when I opened the lid. I would prefer that to be turned off by default. The speakers are weak and very low quality. The speakers on the P855-S5312 are much better."

"This laptop was a good value for the price. I have had not problems getting a wi-fi signal and it functions well. The only thing I do not like is Windows 8. It is difficult to use without prior knowledge. I would prefer to go back to Windows 7, but that is not an option."

"Except for Windows 8, this would be a great computer. Windows 8 is horrible. First thing was to get back the Start menu. Still need to get rid of the tiles or figure out how to prevent the tiles from randomly taking over the screen when moving the curser across the screen or using the RH scrollbar on a webpage."
