"I do not like Windows 8 at all.
I am not using this new laptop because of it.
This is my third Toshiba laptop and I just can't use it.
I am handicapped and use the Library a lot, but I have not been able to get windows 8 to work with any of it.
Would it be possible to send me a different Windows that i can use ?"

"Overall, I am very pleased with my new laptop. I am especially pleased with on-line service I received. Without that, I would have been very upset. My biggest problem was getting used to Win8 I graduated from WinXP. Finally, I have this all setup to where I am at ease. As for this laptop, it is a very useful and well-designed unit. These comments are coming from one who recently celebrated his 88th birthday."

"I had a Toshiba previously and it seemed to perform well. However this one seems to have a faulty keyboard system which makes it unreliable. The first one had a key break apart and it was replaced with a new one after Toshiba said it would have to be returned to the factory. That one evidently had a small amount of coffee spilled on it and the keyboard went crazy. It was also replaced under the extended warranty plan. But the keyboard failure makes it unsuitable for general use. I want something that isn't failure prone."

The laptop has enough speed and storage for want I want to do...I do a lot of pictures and videos so speed and storage room were extremely important! "Would you folks please keep it simple??? No passwords...no pretty pictures...no multiple email-things to confuse me and my husband...no Facebook...no twitter...no games, etc.
Can't you make a simple computer with the ability to get onto the internet per our chosen browser, w/a good Office Suite like MS Office or preferably Open Office, a calculator, Notepad???
Remember when cars and pickups had no carpet (and were easy to clean)? No electric windows? An engine you could actually troubleshoot? No power steering? And they didn't cost as much as a house?
Make a simple computer and a simple operating system. I started with Windows 1. It was much easier.
Yes, I've also used an Apple Mac. And yes, I know that I've probably insulted every engineer at both Toshiba and Microsoft."

"It took a while to get used to the new Windows operating system. Now that I am proficient and actually productive on the computer, I can provide my opinion. The computer is fast and has lots of hard drive space. I wish the screen were taller, rather than wider.The keyboard keys stick a bit, leaving lots of typos when typing quickly. The cost of the laptop is very good for what you are getting in performance."

"My biggest gripe is the mouse pad. It makes it difficult to search the internet because if you don't stick exactly to the middle of the pad, other windows open up or the window you are using closes. The side screen keeps popping up as well all because your finger moves to far over to the side. This feature alone drives me nuts. Not to mention when I am typing, hitting certain keys triggers other features to activate. I have figured out how it happens but to someone else who is less experienced this could lead them to spend money getting the laptop assessed when it is simple as hitting the exact keys that activated the feature. To fix the mouse pad issue I went out and bought a wireless mouse, which works much better. Overall I probably wouldn't purchase this again or recommend it to someone who uses there computer for office work or business."

"Windows 8 is not as convience or friendly as windows 7. I am looking at downgrading my features from 8 to 7 because 7 was a more suitable. I find Windows 8 is only usable if you have a touch screen. It does not work well with normala laptops and although I have learn to manuever around I do not find it as friendly as Windows 7. I find this laptop processor is slower than the previous Toshiba I had and I found it to be disappointing. If I purchased another Toshiba laptop I would make sure it had a better processor in it."

"Good notebook pc for the money, jury is out on Windows 8 however. Light weight, great display and quick response, been getting occasional low virtual memory warning, surprising since it has 6GB ram. and 640gb hard drive and I have barely put anything on it. Sound qualtiy of the built in speakers is aweful, very flat and tinny."

"This is a great laptop with good features. The resolution is excellent and sound efficient. The touchpad is sensitive as sometimes all you have to do is delay just a second and it opens a site.There may be a setting for that but I conquered it by using a wireless mouse. "This laptop is for those looking for decent configuration at best price. Definately not for rugged use, it should be considered only for ocassional use. The big drawbacks of this laptop are its touchpad and keypad. The touchpad is grainy, so it doesn't give a smooth finger movement. Also the cursor movement is jerky. Sometimes it just does not respond to the input. That is frustrating. Best option is to use external mouse instead of the touchpad. The keypad is also filmsy. It feels as if after 1 or 2 years of continuous use the keys might just start poping up. For rugged users it might be of big concern. The configuration to price factor runs in favor of this laptop. The processor is dual core and does all the basic stuff pretty well. I do not expect it to do high end stuff. RAM is 6 GB which I feel is unnecessary. It could have done with 4 GB as well. But more is better I guess.Harddisk is 640GB decent size. This laptop could be used for browsing, watching videos. Doesn't seem to be a gaming laptop definately."

"I bought this laptop to replace an older Toshiba that had given us very good service. This one is quite good, too. The keyboard is large and includes full number pad, making it easier to enter numbers. It is light, lots of memory and storage, and much faster than the one it replaced. The best part was the price. Only one negative, playing music the sound is not good. May be a combination of inexpensive sound card and inexpensive speakers. I was disappointed with the sound, but all in all, this is a good laptop."

"love the laptop! and I am a novice. The only issue is learning to use Windows * but once you realize there is a screen for a similar Windows Explorer you are golden. The new tiles do not support everything I need for school, but the tile for Explorer does. Did not like the fact that I had to buy Microsoft Office for the computer separately. So that increases the cost."

"I like Windows 8 okay. I'm still working on some of the features. I wish there were more (2 or 3)usb ports, especially usb 3. I've added a powered usb hub. The battery seems to go in about 2 - 3 hours. The cost fit into my budget.

"I expected better from Toshiba. I purchased the C855 based on a previous purchase of a Satelite L675-S7048 which is a great machine! The C855 is slow with the dual core Celeron CPU which I did not see in the specs but found out after running the Speccy utility. Windows 8 is terrible without a touch screen and hard to get used to. It also seemed to hang for several seconds while trying to move the mouse. So I blew away Windows 8 and loaded Win 7 but it still seems slow. The DVD player is almost impossible to find the button to open it with and end up having to visually find the button, so I put a dot of hard glue above it so I can feel where the button should be. The ethernet port is rough and find it hard to remove the ethernet cable from the receptacle. The mouse pad is so rough that if feels like I am sanding down my fingerprints when trying to move the cursor. It does have a nice screen with good resolution and bright colors and a large hard drive, so I will continue using it for a while to see if it grows on me. Next time I will look for one with an AMD CPU which seem to perform better than the Celeron CPU. I am not an expert but I am disappointed in this machine overall."

"we are not tech savvy at all. windows 8 is a whole new language we have to learn. the screen size is great. the color and clarity are very nice. it seems to jump pages when you move your hand but once we figure it out better that might change. thankfully we had someone set it up for us otherwise we'd be lost. I don't like all the preinstalled apps that are of no use to us. Still have a lot to learn. Has a good amount of memory. We lost alot of pictures when transferring from our old desktop."

"I found this laptop did what I bought it for - more memory and speed. But the Windows 8 system hasn't proven to be worth the effoert to change so far. I do not find it at all intuitive, but very comples to use. It seems to be loaded with things to buy rather than use. "I cannot fault Toshiba for the garbage that Windows 8 is. It is horrible. I can walk around XP blindfolded, but this is not worth using if it was free. However, to have loaded Norton without the customer requesting it is beyond the imagination. You don't just "remove" it. After you do, you download the Norton removal tool, when that's done, you start in the registry for anything "Norton" or "Symantec". Takes hours to do it right.
Games? Who is the brilliant person that loaded all those games on the laptop? Again, they don't easily come out, especially Wild Tangent. I don't need any of the "apps" Toshiba loaded. Almost all have been removed. I am not sure who loaded all the Bing stuff, but it's all gone, too. Start8 is a beginning for fixing 8. I have no charms, no hot spots, no "Metro" screen whatsoever. I have a normal desktop, normal start menu and control panel, a green XP type start button.
Why after all that other stuff did Toshiba not install the full Synaptics driver package? I've done it before, so you don't have hover select, rather tap to select. REAL pain before I got the Metro screen gone. As you dragged across, everything opened.
Suggestion: Load necessary stuff like Synaptics full driver package. Don't load games or Norton at all....make them something a purchaser can download off your website with a purchase key. I will never, as in ever, use anything Norton again.
Generate drivers for this laptop for XP. As bad as 8 is, if you had such drivers, I would have had XP loaded inside of two days of purchase."

"Its a good laptop for the price point but had little disappointments.
Cons: Webcam quality very poor in normal home lights. Need extra lights for decent video chat etc. Dead Pixel found on screen in 3 days. Windows 8 requires some learning curve.

"This laptop has a very long battery life. The screen is bright. The keyboard is full sized.
The touchpad is offset to the left ... possibly to match the keyboard, but it is very hard to get used to. The multi-gesture of the touchpad does work so well. I carry a mouse for extended use as I grow weary fighting with the cursor jumping around, screen shrinking, and alternate programs opening (all windows 8 related multi-touch "features").
I think this computer loads fairly quickly, runs cool and quiet, and has some nice extras (HDMI, USB3).
The built in video card is just short of some things I wanted to do, and this version of the MB doesn't support Virtual Machines. Had I known this ... I would have spent another $100 for those features."

"My poor rating stems from the fact that this laptop came with Windows 8, and for that reason I ended up returning the laptop after two weeks. The hardware itself was fine. I didn't really like the keyboard layout, but I was getting used to it. What I really couldn't take was Windows 8. I am a "computer professional" and thus I spend most of my work day every day using a computer. I'm not going to relearn the user interface just because someone at Microsoft wants job security. I use XP at work and Win7 at home and both of those user interfaces are more efficient for the "power user" such as myself. Mimicking an Android phone or tablet on a desktop is just plain stupid. It was also unstable. It locked up on me many times with several different programs, including Internet Explorer.
I'll wait for Windows 9 or whatever they call it when they fix the colossal blunder they call Windows 8. I would have kept the laptop if Toshiba or the retailer would have provided a free retrograde (actually upgrade) to Win7 or even XP. Seems appropriate to me that I hate Windows 8 rhymes so well."

"My old Dell Inspiron (2006) had XP OS and Office 2003. My job required that I be able to access docs in Office 2007. I finally made the leap to this Windows 8 machine and got Office 2013 for it. I need and use the Office programs, but all of the many "tiles" of Apps are valueless to me. I am a working person, and don't use my laptop for games/frivolities. I wish that this laptop had the straightforward Windows 7 layout, and that it included manuals and installation CDs."

"Had this laptop for three weeks and think it is a good to better than average computer. Loading and running Windows is fast, the internet using IE10 is good loading speeds most of the time. Don't know if the lag sometimes is due to site being slow or other reasons I lean to the site being assessed being slow. Getting used to the pad is a job but I like the way it works. Screen is great. Price with the performance I get is great."

"I've had three Toshiba laptops and they all lasted many years.
The only complaint I have is that where the power cord goes into the case it sticks out about two inches. This means you need to be VERY careful not to bang it since it will damage the internal connector (which is not easily fixed.) I notice that the newer and next higher model has a 90 degree bend where the power cord plugs into the laptop. Too bad I didn't get that on mine."

"I've had no problems with the machine, it does everything it's supposed to. The performance, battery life, the weight, the keypad, etc are all OK, and I like having the number pad. I do not, however, like Windows 8. All the flashy things that popout unexpectedly when a finger unintentionally brushes the wrong way is annoying. The path to programs, documents, photos, etc is annoying, too, and none of it is intuitive or sensible.to me. I don't play games, I work with it and need to be able to find and use things quickly easily and efficiently when I need them. I would much rather have XP back."

For me windows 8 its a breeze to use, the laptop is a very good size so you don't have squint to read as if you were on a net book but isn't too huge to travel with. its not good for gaming though and it has a short cut on the mouse that takes you to another page and it constantly does it an drives me nuts D: but if you didn't want to use windows 8 there is a desktop feature so you don't have to really learn something new"
