"After purchasing a 17" Toshiba laptop for my use in the classroom last year, I just purchased two more with my own funds. LAUSD can't fund my special education program to the level I need to teach, and I can't teach to the students' needs with pencil and paper. When my classroom was two computers short, Toshiba came to my rescue with the Satellite C855D-S5202- useful, sturdy, fast and powerful enough for daily use by a multitude of students. And I could afford them on my teacher's salary. Thank you, Toshiba."

"This computer was purchased just to access the internet and download files I could not download on my Ipad because it does not have adobe. For the money it is a great value. However, compared to more expensive laptops I have had in the past, this laptop is extremely slow. It boots slowly and loads pages slowly. If you are not in a crazy rush to get information, this computer will serve your purposes and save you 2 or 3 hundred dollars."

"We are extremely pleased with our Toshiba laptop. It is a great value for the cost! The only disappointment is the processor speed. Our last computer was old with 250k RAM. We thought that the the new 2G processor would be significantly faster, but it often just as slow as the 250k"

"My computer needs aren't very demanding. I need a computer for word processessing capability, digital photo and video editing and file management, web surfing and website maintenance, powerpoint presentations, desktop publishing, and some spreadsheet use. This machine does everything I need a computer to do at an unbelievably low price. It even does some things that are nice but not necessary to me -like letting me Skype with good picture and sound, or doing a great job with DVD viewing. There are other competing brands that would essentially do the same things this machine does for about the same cost. What sold me on this one over the competition was the crisp, high definition picture provided by the monitor screen -important to me because of the amount of work I do with photo and video files. Secondly, I liked the tactile feel of the keyboard -another plus because my main use of a computer is word processing applications. Then, there are subtile little things like the tactile response of the pointing device and the fact that it is recessed a bit to prevent inadvertent cursor movement during use, as well as the textured surfaces of the plastics used for the "body" of the machine -the surface texture looks upscale and cotemporary but hides smudges and fingerprints well. I also liked the placement of the usb ports and having the optical drive tray open on the left of the machine versus the right -insignificant to some, but uber-cool to right-handed me who has to work in confined spaces sometimes. The processor clock speed isn't blisteringly fast, but it is fast enough for 95% of my use and it is actually fast enough for the remaining 5%, too, but a little more speed would be nice for that and I wouldn't want any less. The plus side is that the AMD processor used seems to be a VERY effecient user of power. I can work non-stop with minimal idle time for 4 to 5 hours on a full battery charge doing a mix of word processing, digital photo management, e-mail including attachment of full resolution photo files, and so on, before looking for a wall outlet just in case I need to plug in. My prior machine was advertised to do this, but in reality would only let me do my computing my way for about 2.5 to three hours untethered to a wall outlet. This machine seems to run really cool, too... That has to be a plus for long term longevity and definitely is for user comfort. My last machine was a mid-range model, c. 2005, and this "entry level" machine blows it totally away on every metric of performance at one-third the price that I paid for the previous one seven years ago. It seems to be solidly built out of quality stuff and my expectation is that it will provide a nice, long, useful service life. If you need a laptop for common student and worker-bee tasks, this machine will handle them nicely without tying up your money in features and performance levels that might be nice but not necessary for commonplace computer use. The built in webcam works well from what I'm told by friends and associates who've seen the result on their end, and so it is with the built in mic, too. The no-name speakers are vastly superior to the Altec-Lansing dissapointments in my old machine. The sound quality isn't something that will impress a hardcore audiophile, but I was pleasantly suprised by how good it is coming from a low-buck machine -as good as that of some machines costing many times what this does. The only nit I have to pick about this machine is that the release for the optical drive tray isn't very tactile in feel or user friendly, but I probably only notice it because so many little details seem so well thought out on this budget laptop, and it's really a small nit I'm picking. The drive tray seems kind of flimsy compared to that of my heavier, bulkier, slower, and Methusula-like former machine. If your computer needs aren't uber-demanding cad/cam on the go kinds of things, and you're more of a worker than game player, this machine is definitely worth a look."
