"This computer would be the best I've ever had except for Windows 8 which is weird. I had a computer consultant add a "Start" button so I can at least use the thing. The developers of Windows 8 are focused on photos & videos instead of doing business."

"The first one I brought home had someone else's name set up on the hard drive. I returned it. The second one (the one I have now) has one big issue. The mouse pad freezes up the curser after I get to the start page. I had to connect a wireless mouse to the computer to get it to work. Considering returning it. I have only had it a few weeks."

"I purchased this model for the i7 processor. I am glad to say that I am very pleased with the processing speed of the laptop. It handles the video editing software program Lightworks by Editshare without lagging when processing the h.264 files, my previous computer could not handle this. OK, a couple of dislikes 1. The keys are a bit too fragile. 2. The memory card slot only accepts SD cards, would rather have it capable of accepting micro sd, xd, etc type of cards as well. 3. The battery life on my laptop is not as long as I hoped for, have to recharge it far too often. 4. There is too much Toshiba generated software pre-loaded on the computer. 5. Seems like the internal fan works overtime sometimes, might need better ventilation. Now for some Likes: 1. Processing Speed! 2. Descent Price for what you get. 3. Has a number keypad, which I use a lot! 4. Weight is OK. 5. Screen looks great. 6. Adequate sized storage on hard drive. 7, DVD/CD ROM plays great, with good speed."

"I am very happy with my new laptop and am even surprisingly used to the Windows 8 already. The laptop has a beautiful look and feel and runs very well. I got it for myself but my 6 year old daughter has also taken a liking to it. She loves the Windows 8 start menu ease of access for all of her websites. The battery life is particularly good as advertised."

"It was an adjustment for me to go from a desktop to a laptop for all my projects. I've only had this for a few weeks but I like the large screen, and the keyboard feels "natural". I've never really liked the mouse pad on other laptops, but I like this one. I feel like I have more control. Windows 8 is an adjustment too, but so far I'm loving my new Toshiba!"

Wish it came with a paper user guide, because when the computer goes down, I can't use the virtual user guide, can I?
I HAAAAATE the no start menu. Sometimes I just leave it on , as I can't get it to show me icons with which I may get it turned off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I HAATE Windows 8. Is Windows listening? It seems Windows gets worse every time they come up with a new one. Clearly, they are not listening to users."

"This is my 3rd Toshiba laptop in 6 years. I've had good luck with them; in fact, my only issues have come from ignorance or accidents. When my last laptop wouldn't boot, Toshiba paid for warranty service for it even when the warranty had expired (it turned out that I had 2 competing virus checkers installed)."

"Everything is excellent about the laptop. But the body is of plastic/fiber so bit delicate. With Wi-Fi there is some serious problem. Sometimes it is very difficult to turn on the wi-fi. Even when I press the wi-fi button it will not turn on."

This Toshiba was a birthday present for my 16 year old daughter...
The only thing I do not like is: Windows 8 operating system!!! NO Start Menu !!! This is REALLY Annoying!
Thought Vista operating system was bad, But Windows 8 takes the cake!
If I were in the market for another laptop or pc. Would make sure it is NOT Windows 8 !
Definitely make sure my next purchase would be Windows 7 !
But would definitely buy another Toshiba! Toshiba has my confidence, For innovative, performance & stylish looks for life!

"I am a salesman who needed a powerful processor for work. The q3630 meets those needs. That was my main focus while searching for a laptop. There is not a lot of bloatware. I migrated the os to a 256 ssd and now boot to internet is 15 seconds. Very happy with this and would recommend to anyone needing a powerful processing machine. Spreadsheets, cad files, quoting tools all load and operate with ease. Of course the ssd helps but the q3630 is the brains."

"My experience with this product has been fairly disappointing so far. As of purchasing it a little over a month ago, I have already had to send it in to Toshiba for repair under the warranty because the screen back light failed after 3 weeks of casual use. Other than potentially faulty parts, the laptop had been a reasonable buy for the price. The keyboard sometimes requires extra pressure on the keys for them to register and the touch pad lacks scrolling capability which was a slightly disorienting change from my previous computer. Overall, it seemed to be an alright product for the price, but technical failures have marred my experience."

"The only reason I don't give 5 stars on overall rating is due to a couple of things that I consider important. One is that the USB 3.0 ports are too close to each other and to the HDMI port, you'll need an USB hub to use them all at the same time. The other one is that the keyboard is not backlit, this is a most for me and I thought, for some reason, that it was. In the other hand, the screen is great, very clear and wide enough for any job. Watching movies via HDMI is very nice, good graphics and color, much better than with my previous laptop. The sound coming out of the speakers is loud and clear, very nice feature if you are watching something directly in the laptop or listening to music. Performance is very fast, I use a lot of photoshop and other programs that require a lot of ram and so far so good in this laptop.
I am very happy with it."

"This computer is decent. So far there are only 2 things I don't like about it. Windows 8 and opening the laptop lid when the computer is on your lap. Windows 8 may be a decent operating system but its not for me. It took some work but windows 7 can be put on this computer for the people who love that OS. The laptop lid can pinch your skin if you open it on your lap the wrong way. Other than that the laptop is the best I've had. The HD cam isn't as good as thought."

"Why would you sell a computer that has Windows 8 installed (which is a TouchScreen environment) and not have a touch screen as a feature?? I had never used a touch screen pc, but have purchased 2 Toshiba Satellites, prior to this S855-S5378. I love the first Toshiba with XP, enjoy the Toshiba with Windows 7, but HATE this one with Windows 8."

"Carefully consider your purchase. The screen is disproportionaly short ;e.g. your e-mail display will be severely cropped. The keyboard is slow; i.e., it fails to register "at speed" key strokes. You have to type at a highly reduced speed and hit the keys "FIRMLY" to get your input to register. Also, take a close look at the factory installed software; it is very limited. You get mostly toys and advertising software. No useful products are incuded for free. The keyboard arrangement is not user friendly e.g. the delete key has been moved to an awkward location and the touch pad is located too far left. The touch pad is also somewhat unpredictable, i.e., it gives poor pointer control.. Nothing is intuitive; read the "electronic only" user guide before you even think about putting the PC to use. Personally, a paper user guide woud be much more convenient. I used my previous Tohiba laptop for 9 years. I hope this one doesn't last as long because it just doesn't measure up to its predecessor."

"overall i am pleased with my purchase, I've only had it a couple of months. have not had the opportunity to see how long the battery will last.. only weird thing. the plug for the network cable is toward the front of the unit on the right hand side. this is just about where most (right handed) people would use a mouse, so the wire could be in the way. It should be more towards the back. if not totally in the back."

"This is a good value laptop, but with any value system they are cost and benefit trade offs. The limiting factor for this laptop seems to be the SATA controler and hardrive performance. A SATA III controller with a Solid State Drive would bring the system to near perfection. This system came with Windows 8 OS. It would have been better with Windows 7 OS. Window 8 seems to be designed for systems with touch screens."

"This computer offers everything a laptop can offer from lightweight for it's size (15.6 in) including a CD/DVD drive to the power you need to multi-task with out a hiccup. Still getting use to windows 8, but I do like how the track pad interacts with 8. Vibrant screen quality and has a full keyboard with 10 key pad. Wifi has a decent range as does Bluetooth. I am still trying to figure out which way computing is going bigger or smaller, but for now this compact computer in easy on the eyes, small enough to carry and powerful to do what you want. Over all a very good computer."

"Realtek are cheap wireless cards that has slow performance. Whether im using my home network or wifi hotspot on my 4G Galaxy s3. This reception and speed is poor. Have tried to find updates to fix. My old toshiba core 2 duo with an intel card out performs this whole unit in speed. Dont understand."

"This is my first laptop, so I have nothing to compare it to. With a little help, I've been able to operate it fairly easily. Am enjoying the wireless feature of a laptop and it works well with my wireless printer. I've only had it a month, so have a lot more to learn. Have used the on line instruction manual as time permits, which is helpful and informative."

"This is my 2'nd Toshiba laptop. The 1"st one still runs fine after 5 years but I thought I'd treat myself to a better processor. After two months this new laptop has met all expectations. "I'm not one to read instruction manuals before using a product, but I think it would have been wise to do so with this laptop. Navigation isn't very intuitive. This is the first laptop I've owned where using it right out of the box was a struggle. Now that I've become more familiar with the laptop, it's become easier."

"In the end, I love this laptop - but it took a lot of work to get it there. As far as hardware goes I think it is terrific for the price. The operating system, Windows 8, does not seem to fit for a laptop without a touchscreen. I think that I could have gotten used to it given time, but I found that my primary software would not function in Windows 8 even though it worked well in Windows 7. That is not necessarily a surprise. I expected there may be issues with a change in operating systems. What was a surprise was how I was prevented from dual booting Windows 7 alongside Windows 8 by the UEFI Bios and GPT type partitioning of the hard disk. I have had no experiences with either of these relatively new technologies to this point. I researched extensively on the internet for a solution that would allow me to dual boot Windows 7 without success. I ended up turning off the UEFI Bios, installing a new hard drive which I partitioned in a standard fashion without GPT. After that I installed Windows 7. I kept the original hard drive with Windows 8 on it in case I should stumble across a solution down the road, or until my software is upgraded to support Windows 8. So it was a little frustrating for a while, but in the end this thing is a powerhouse! I can't seem to throw enough at it to slow it down!"

"We purchased this laptop to use with our projector. We have not used them together yet, so I am not a good judge. It is taking me a while to get use to Windows 8. I wish we had purchased it while we could still get windows 7. I would probably used it more to try it out, and set up various program for the church to use. I have no problems with the laptop."

"I am very pleased with the computer which has performed just as I had hoped. Only one complaint is that the keyboard sensitivity which sometimes causes a letter to not register but this is very minor. The battery life is excellent, graphics very good, large ram a big plus, and after a learning curve actually like Windows 8"

"So far it has been fine, speed is nice. First time I have used Win 8 so don't know if that is the reason for speed or due to C7 processor, but nice and fast to open programs etc. The touchpad is not very sensitive which is giving me problems and can't find that it is adjustable as my Dell XPS was. "The review title really says it all. I've owned this computer 3 days and the touchpad has not worked right from the get go. It is irratic, it freezes up, it zooms in when it's supposed to be scrolling. It scrolls side to side when I want up and down and at times the cursor just dissappears and of course it's intermittent. - Otherwise it works great with a USB mouse, but that's not what I paid for.
I normally have a high opinion of Toshiba products which is why I bought this one, but their use of the Synaptics touchpad would seem to be a mistake.
The forums are loaded with complaints about the Synaptics product in most laptop manufacturers and not one solid solution that I can find."

I liked my old one a lot better then I do this one .It had Windows xp in it .With this new one you get into your e-mail and you have trouble getting to the home page . I really think it should be explained on how to use it more then it does . I still have my other one and I still use it quite a lot . The games on this new one are not the same as on the old one either . It can be the same game but it doesn't play the same . If I had to do it all over again I would have purchased the HP Envy. The difference in icore5 and icore7 processors is not that significant. "I had to have my son set up my new Toshiba as I was not familiar with Windows 8. He set me up to be able to email and play my games. He'll inform me on other things in time. My one problem, NOW, is while I am playing my games, it tells me that the Internet Explorer has stopped working. I don't know why and it does not tell me. I have updated when I'm told, so I don't know what else to do. Other than that, it is fast to use. AND the one feature I love is the button you can shut down the use of the mouse pad. "I was long overdue to replace my Dell Dimension desktop and Dell Inspiron laptop. The desktop was running XP and the laptop was running Vista (worst OS ever). I use Adobe Photoshop to edit photos and it is a pretty demanding application. My old computers struggled with it but it runs great on the new Toshiba laptop. My web browsing, which had become frustratingly slow with IE 8 on the XP and Vista machines, is blazing fast on the new Toshiba laptop. Application startup times, boot time, and shutdown time, are also very fast. It is now a pleasant experience to work on the computer again. I really like the touch and feel of the keypad. Note: I have only used the Toshiba laptop on A/C power, so I don't know for sure if my battery life rating is accurate. Toshiba's web site says the laptop can be run on battery up to 12 hours, which if true seems excellent."

However, two points I am not as happy with. The computer itself isn't as rugged as early Toshiba laptops. This is important for me, because I travel with my work a lot. "I feel that TOSHIBA put profit ahead of value/functionality with this model. I am very disappointed. The Realtek RTL8723AE WIFI NIC card is useless.
The key board does not work well. You have to press down forcefully when typing compared to other models.
Windows 8 is a joke. It appears to built for social networking. I swear by TOSHIBA products because of the 15+ year history of using laptops error free. Each TOSHIBA laptop that I purchased has had I life span of 5yrs or more. My kids get the hand me downs."

"Toshiba has produced a potentially excellent computer. With Windows 8 installed, however, the value is destroyed. The desktop is cluttered and bewildering. Every application in the computer, including applications used only within other applications, is included. Finding the application one wants is time consuming when compared with the Windows 7 desktop, on which is included only the applications one chooses to include.
Updates are difficult to install. The initial Windows updates refuse to configure. At least every other day, power-down or restart includes "install updates," and there is no way to bypass the process. It takes 28 minutes for the updates to install, configure, fail, and be reverted. This is unacceptable!
Norton does a "cleanup" daily. One of the things it does is wipe all of my saved auto-logon data, making username and password entry necessary every day. I've tried to bypass this feature, but every effort has been thwarted.
These items are but a few of the reasons why I can't recommend this computer to a friend, or even to an enemy. Unless one can be found with Windows 7 installed I highly recommend against its purchase."

The set-up process was adequate and intuitive at a basic level. Advanced features required excessive efforts to implement.
The machine crashes at least one a week requiring a hard shutdown/restart. For the i7 CPU, it's just plain slow. The memory is adequate. The biggest issue is that this not a well integrated machine - it's slow and appears that is was designed for a Windows 7 OS. While Windows 8 is not a panacea, this PC appears to be more of an afterthought as opposed a well designed (or at least competently designed) PC.
I just cannot think of a good target audience for this PC given it's design and performance."

"I wish I had looked more carefully at the maximum display resolution and had more time to use the key board.
I cannot seem to find the right angle for proper viewing of the display. Too light, to dark, shadowing and ghosting of the picture are just some of the results.

"I like Toshiba, I have had another Toshiba laptop for several years now with no problems except a bad battery. My problem is not as much with Toshiba as it is with trying to learn the new operating system (not fond of windows 8 at this time). It has made it difficult to locate my wireless printer, router, you name it. My only comment on the laptop is that I continue to get an error message that "my computer has encountered a serious problem and needed to reboot". This happens about every other time I power up. Additionally, I sorely miss the Hibernate option!!"

"I purchased this laptop because of the great feature/price combination. Once I got it home, I noticed two things about it that bother me to the point I am not sure I could recommend it to someone else.
One is the touchpad. I am not particularly fond of the design of the touchpad. It feels cheaply made and not as responsive as I would like.
The other concern is what appears to be a very fragile design of the laptop case. It has a brushed aluminum top that seems to be paper thin and is easily pushed in with little to no pressure and the side plastic moldings seem to be very fragile and similar to what is found on low quality toys. It may be some sort of high impact plastic, but I do not wish to test the theory.
In summary, great features, good price, but feels like it can break at any moment."

"I am really enjoying the computer aside from the keyboard. The performance on this computer for the price, there is no better deal. The problem is the terrible keyboard. The amount of features on the computer are very good (usb 3.0, hdmi very good display) but the only reason I gave the computer 1 star in features is reflective of the keyboard and to a lesser extent the speakers.The sound is not great on the speakers, but this is not important to me because I always use headphones.The keyboard actually hinders the function of the computer for me. The keyboard is of extremely cheap quality. There are keys that you must press much harder on in order for them to work. It is just a very terrible feel and detracts from my efficiency."
