"I purchased this model for the i7 processor. I am glad to say that I am very pleased with the processing speed of the laptop. It handles the video editing software program Lightworks by Editshare without lagging when processing the h.264 files, my previous computer could not handle this. OK, a couple of dislikes 1. The keys are a bit too fragile. 2. The memory card slot only accepts SD cards, would rather have it capable of accepting micro sd, xd, etc type of cards as well. 3. The battery life on my laptop is not as long as I hoped for, have to recharge it far too often. 4. There is too much Toshiba generated software pre-loaded on the computer. 5. Seems like the internal fan works overtime sometimes, might need better ventilation. Now for some Likes: 1. Processing Speed! 2. Descent Price for what you get. 3. Has a number keypad, which I use a lot! 4. Weight is OK. 5. Screen looks great. 6. Adequate sized storage on hard drive. 7, DVD/CD ROM plays great, with good speed."

"I have been unable to use my new Laptop...It has been in the shop for over 6 weeks awaiting Toshiba support for needed drivers for anything other than win8 and Toshiba has been completely uncooperative. Multiple phone calls have not got any straight answers. I do NOT use my computer for social media, I use it as a work tool...WIN 8 is a disaster."

"I finally decided to shop for my own laptop. I own many desktops, at one time I had 20 of them with 3 set up on one desk to use at one time. I've been told I have computer ADD. My wife implored me not to just buy one fast but to shop around and get one I would be happy with for a long time ( for the right price of course) and boy did I. I bought the s850-bt3n22 with a terabyte hard drive and 8 gigs of ram. I haven't had to use multiple computers when working nor have I wanted to. The feel, portability, and performance of this laptop is everything I wanted. I bought my wife a Toshiba L-series around 3 years back and it has lasted and is still being used daily so I know with the quality that Toshibas have I'm looking forward to using it for a long time, and with the option to upgrade it including bringing my memory to16gigs I feel it's going to be a great computer for a long time."

"I purchased this notebook as a replacement for my aging desktop system. Performance-wise, it seems more than up to that task. My only criticisms at this point is that it does have Windows 8 on it, it doesn't have Bluetooth support and there doesn't seem to be a good docking option. But, since it *was* purchased as a desktop replacement and will usually run Linux, those aren't too serious."

"This was the 3rd computer. The 1st had file missing and was sold as new, but was used. Not the sellers fault., all came sealed. The second computer crashed hard drive when windows8 update. The 3rd has worked fine. Really dislike the Windows8. Make the computer too slow because of all the things running, which I turned most off. Not happy with the Intel Graphic, but for the price, it will have to do. I also own a tablet which I love."

"I've had this laptop for over a month. Yes it has Windows 8 and I knew going in that it was going to take some getting used to but for me, the computer itself works great. It's me not taking the time to figure out windows 8. I'm not going to knock Toshiba b/c this computer runs it - as does everyone else who's building new systems.
I am able to work on several tasks all the while streaming video or audio without any flaws. Pages loan very fast and process run without any glitches so far. For the money, this is a GREAT computer.
Just be prepared to learn a new operating system but you'll most likely have to anyways if you buy a new computer."

"I appreciated the hardware, but the software was atrocious. I still have not been able to figure out how to effectively use the software (Windows 8). It has hampered my enjoyment and productivity. "I got this Toshiba Laptop because of the features and the speed of the processor. The only thing I did not like was Windows 8. That is not the fault of the laptop. After getting used to Windows 8 and having to call Microsoft to have them adjust a glitch in the software, I have not had any problems. Would recommend to anyone needing a fast computer."

"The original laptop keyboard randomly lost typed characters. After about 10 days, I tried the store sample and was convinced that the problem was with my laptop. The store had no unused replacements, so I returned my laptop to the store and bought another identical unit at another store. Wasted a good week of my time, but I am fully satisfied with my new laptop."

"I bought a Satellite S855-S5369 as an emergency replacement for a 4+ year old Vaio that would not install Turbo-Tax.
I was initially impressed with the Satellite's speed, both in loading programs and in booting.
After two weeks I began to get low memory warnings (this is allegedly a 6gb memory machine), and then not just warnings, but extremely erratic behavior and unexpected freezing or shutdown. Starting Task Manager and adding up the actual memory being used by each program running, and dividing that by the percentage of memory shown to be in use, showed that only 25% of memory was being accessed. However, after two days of this behavior (during which I was on the road and could not refer to any repair facility), the problem seems to have resolved itself. I have little confidence that it will not return.
The keyboard rattles when I type, especially at the right end. This makes me fear that vibration is going to have a deleterious effect on the machine sooner or later. The computer also flexes distressingly when I handle it, such as when picking it up by one end to move it from desk to carrying case.
I am not at all pleased with Windows 8. It is a lot harder to navigate in Windows Explorer that Vista was, and some functions available in Vista (such as the ability to move images around in a folder to compose a slide show) cannot be accomplished in W8 - when you try to drag a file to a different place in the folder, it does not budge. The only way to move it is to rename it and let the indexer place it in a new location - VERY cumbersome, not at all convenient.
So far I am not impressed by either the hardware nor the software I was forced to move to."

"I am really enjoying this laptop. I did have a HP that had problems after just a few months. Finally got rid of it after it developed " thermal heat" issues. These started after it went out of warrant by 6 months. Think we will stick with Toshiba. My wife's laptop is a Toshiba and is right at 6 years old and still running well."

"It was an adjustment for me to go from a desktop to a laptop for all my projects. I've only had this for a few weeks but I like the large screen, and the keyboard feels "natural". "This is my first laptop, and I did not know quite what to expect or whether I would enjoy the transition from a traditional desktop computer. But I discovered that my new Toshiba, which was priced very competitively considering its features, was very easy to set up and use; for barely one-third the price of my old desktop, it came pre-loaded with more than ten times the hard drive space and sixteen times as much RAM! "I purchased this laptop mainly for school, but I am also a long-time developer, network administrator, and heavy video processor. It does beautifully running Photoshop and Visual Studio concurrently, and is easy enough to use. I'll admit being weary of Windows 8 - I'm a Linux/Android lover and it just seemed like a skinned version of Windows 7.
But to be honest, it was not that difficult to learn Windows 8. The main problem is that the laptop comes with Windows 8 and not Windows 8 Pro. There are many, many limitations on Windows 8 that are not listed when you purchase the laptop. For example, you cannot join a local domain (so if you've got networked computers, they will be unavailable unless running windows 7 or higher due to a lack of "homegroup" functionality in previous versions). The user account security cannot be completely disabled without breaking the Windows Store. You cannot execute unsigned scripts without booting into a special instance of Windows and then that script will only function until you restart again, so things like MagicDisk will never function properly. And if you're an administrator, you'll need another Remote Desktop solution because the built in one is disabled.
That aside, the laptop functions beautifully. If you can, I'd recommend downgrading to Windows 7. It is rather unfortunate that they have chosen to ship their products with an inferior version of the OS, as the additional investment of Windows 8 Pro would have made this product a 10."

"This is my 3rd Toshiba laptop in 6 years. I've had good luck with them; in fact, my only issues have come from ignorance or accidents. When my last laptop wouldn't boot, Toshiba paid for warranty service for it even when the warranty had expired (it turned out that I had 2 competing virus checkers installed)."

The only thing I do not like is: Windows 8 operating system!!! NO Start Menu !!! This is REALLY Annoying!
Thought Vista operating system was bad, But Windows 8 takes the cake!
If I were in the market for another laptop or pc. Would make sure it is NOT Windows 8 !
Definitely make sure my next purchase would be Windows 7 !
But would definitely buy another Toshiba! Toshiba has my confidence, For innovative, performance & stylish looks for life!

"I had this computer for 17 days and it had a critical driver failure. The battery life was horrible with barely 3 hours a charge. The computer would frequently lock up restarting forcing a manual shut down. DO NOT BUY THIS COMPUTER! I was lucky to get my money back and switch to a MacBook Pro and that was the best money I have ever spent"

Windows 8, not so much. The world really needs to find an alternative to Microsoft for non-Mac/Apple users. "I am a salesman who needed a powerful processor for work. The q3630 meets those needs. That was my main focus while searching for a laptop. There is not a lot of bloatware. I migrated the os to a 256 ssd and now boot to internet is 15 seconds. Very happy with this and would recommend to anyone needing a powerful processing machine. Spreadsheets, cad files, quoting tools all load and operate with ease. Of course the ssd helps but the q3630 is the brains."

"I've had this laptop for about two weeks now and there's only one word I can say about it - excellent. The specs are very high, the computer's super-fast and was able to play every game I threw at it smoothly even at max settings. Battery life is above average. "This is my third Toshiba laptop. They are excellent machines! I wish I could have found one with Windows 7 installed but there were none to be found. So I purchased one with the truly awful Windows 8, thinking that it might not be as bad as I had heard. In fact it wasn't as bad as I'd heard, it was much much worse. The many and various popups and things that slide across the screen all the time simply serve to spoil my workflow. So I had to buy a copy of Windows 7 Pro, uninstall Win 8, and upgrade my Toshiba to Windows 7. Now I have a fabulous machine! It works like a dream!"

"This is a super fast machine with excellent wifi reception. Compared to older wifi machines in our house, this one takes the same 'low signal' as a 5 bar strong signal. 12 GB RAM with a fast processor does wonders when you're running the new Office Professional suite with 15 -20 windows open (Excel and Skype included in the mix) and NOTHING hangs or pauses. Talk about instant gratification. I heard that gaming isn't the thing with older versions of the S855, but I humbly suggest that they give this one, the 5165 iteration a try. I gave 4 stars for features and battery because honestly, I haven't run it on battery for more than 90 minutes (which used 15%) and haven't give the features a full work out. Windows 8 is a bit of a challenge at first but I got a hint from an IT person that you should hover over the corners of your screen. And in the start screen, a right click will allow you to access all applications (just like the old start button that used to live in the lower left corner). Not as intuitive as an i-thing, but you get the hang of it after a couple days."

"Great computer for everyday use from school to work. The Core I7 and 12GB of RAM ensures fast speeds on multiple open apps and great for streaming video or music. 1TB HDD is more then enough for all my movies and music with lots of space left over for future downloads or programs. "My experience with this product has been fairly disappointing so far. As of purchasing it a little over a month ago, I have already had to send it in to Toshiba for repair under the warranty because the screen back light failed after 3 weeks of casual use. Other than potentially faulty parts, the laptop had been a reasonable buy for the price. The keyboard sometimes requires extra pressure on the keys for them to register and the touch pad lacks scrolling capability which was a slightly disorienting change from my previous computer. Overall, it seemed to be an alright product for the price, but technical failures have marred my experience."

"The only reason I don't give 5 stars on overall rating is due to a couple of things that I consider important. One is that the USB 3.0 ports are too close to each other and to the HDMI port, you'll need an USB hub to use them all at the same time. The other one is that the keyboard is not backlit, this is a most for me and I thought, for some reason, that it was. In the other hand, the screen is great, very clear and wide enough for any job. Watching movies via HDMI is very nice, good graphics and color, much better than with my previous laptop. The sound coming out of the speakers is loud and clear, very nice feature if you are watching something directly in the laptop or listening to music. Performance is very fast, I use a lot of photoshop and other programs that require a lot of ram and so far so good in this laptop.
I am very happy with it."

"I've never been a techie person, so my experience with this computer may result from that.
Firstly, I am impressed at how fast the computer goes through its tasks. I am hoping that continues.
Unfortunately, it took me two days to discover how to turn the power off. The instructional video does not provide an understanding of how it is done. I think it is a language problem, and probably is that I do not talk the modern computer lingo.
I am not impressed with Windows 8. It is cumbersome for someone who is used to reading. Apps Icons do not provide enough understanding of what they are for.
I may have listed myself as a newbie, but I have been using computers since Apple came out with the Apple II, and had to learn to write basic programs. So I do have some experience."

"This computer is decent. So far there are only 2 things I don't like about it. Windows 8 and opening the laptop lid when the computer is on your lap. Windows 8 may be a decent operating system but its not for me. It took some work but windows 7 can be put on this computer for the people who love that OS. The laptop lid can pinch your skin if you open it on your lap the wrong way. Other than that the laptop is the best I've had. The HD cam isn't as good as thought."

"This is the first laptop I've ever purchased. I did a lot of research and it was between an Asus or Toshiba. I'm glad I chose this Toshiba. I'm not a gamer, as far as, detailed games - only Facebook style. Therefore, speed for that does not concern me. I use it mainly for e-mail, FB, updating my website, picture uploading, ITunes, and of course, Microsoft Office, and for those applications I'm happy with the speed. Let's face it, I was coming from using a Dell Desktop variety, where it took almost 5 minutes for the internet to load! Anything was an improvement. Once you get the hang of Windows 8 it's really not as bad as everyone makes it out to be - it's change and some people can't handle change. I'm still finding out new things about the laptop, but I'm very happy with it. The only thing I have to get used to is the keypad -- still having issues with that, as far as, some keys really need a bit more pressure. Reviews are a dime a dozen, and each individuals' needs are different - go with what your gut tells you. Let's face it - laptops are not meant to last forever, unfortunately - all companies want you to continually buy new ones at least every 5 years. If I get that out of this, I'll be happy."

"After having used Windows 8 which comes on this computer, I would get the touchscreen model. This model seems to work ok. It seems that having power and memory doesn't mean more speed when using windows 8. "Carefully consider your purchase. The screen is disproportionaly short ;e.g. your e-mail display will be severely cropped. The keyboard is slow; i.e., it fails to register "at speed" key strokes. You have to type at a highly reduced speed and hit the keys "FIRMLY" to get your input to register. Also, take a close look at the factory installed software; it is very limited. You get mostly toys and advertising software. No useful products are incuded for free. The keyboard arrangement is not user friendly e.g. the delete key has been moved to an awkward location and the touch pad is located too far left. The touch pad is also somewhat unpredictable, i.e., it gives poor pointer control.. Nothing is intuitive; read the "electronic only" user guide before you even think about putting the PC to use. Personally, a paper user guide woud be much more convenient. I used my previous Tohiba laptop for 9 years. I hope this one doesn't last as long because it just doesn't measure up to its predecessor."

"Working in a one to one computer school I have been given many Toshiba computers for 7+years. I did not think twice about purchasing one for myself and all the school work I do at home. I like the 15.6" screen and battery life of my S855. However, with the higher price, I thought I was getting better quality. The keyboard is such poor quality. "This laptop seems to be geared for videos and gaming, which i do none of. I purchased it because it came with 8GB RAM and was a good price point for this. I'm able to run 2 VMs and have very good performance (previous laptop had only 4 g and was extremely slow running just 1 VM). Keyboard layout is ok, but having to hit the FN key to get the function key is again indicative that the default layout is for videos. I also mostly have a second screen attached, the connection does not have holes to accept the screws from the VGA cable. Makes me worried I'm going to bend a pin, so need to be careful here. Wireless antenna has good range."

"So far this has been a great laptop. The one thing I'm not sure if I like yet is Windows 8. Battery life is good but would like more. It boots up very quickly, I really appreciate that! This is the first one I've had that didn't have a center of the key board mouse button which I have grown to really like over the years. I continually touch the touch pad (which I have always disabled in the past in favor of the button) with the heal of my hand while i'm typing which messes me up but I am getting used to it. The screen is great, very bright. All in all a very good laptop and again probably the biggest complaint is battery life."

"15.6" display is OK, but this comes without some of the separate keys that come with a 17.3" display, such as the home, end, page up and down keys, and the function keys.
Performance doesn't seem much better than my old PC.
It hangs up often, mostly when running File Explorer, but I think this is related to Windows 8. I contacted Toshiba but they were unable to resolve the problem.
Overall I'm satisfied but I expect lots of folks would be disappointed."

"overall i am pleased with my purchase, I've only had it a couple of months. have not had the opportunity to see how long the battery will last.. only weird thing. the plug for the network cable is toward the front of the unit on the right hand side. this is just about where most (right handed) people would use a mouse, so the wire could be in the way. It should be more towards the back. if not totally in the back."

"This is a good value laptop, but with any value system they are cost and benefit trade offs. The limiting factor for this laptop seems to be the SATA controler and hardrive performance. A SATA III controller with a Solid State Drive would bring the system to near perfection. This system came with Windows 8 OS. It would have been better with Windows 7 OS. Window 8 seems to be designed for systems with touch screens."

"This computer offers everything a laptop can offer from lightweight for it's size (15.6 in) including a CD/DVD drive to the power you need to multi-task with out a hiccup. Still getting use to windows 8, but I do like how the track pad interacts with 8. Vibrant screen quality and has a full keyboard with 10 key pad. Wifi has a decent range as does Bluetooth. I am still trying to figure out which way computing is going bigger or smaller, but for now this compact computer in easy on the eyes, small enough to carry and powerful to do what you want. Over all a very good computer."

"This is my first laptop, so I have nothing to compare it to. With a little help, I've been able to operate it fairly easily. Am enjoying the wireless feature of a laptop and it works well with my wireless printer. I've only had it a month, so have a lot more to learn. Have used the on line instruction manual as time permits, which is helpful and informative."

"I love this laptop. Just a couple of things are annoying. The keyboard directional keys and delete key could be better positioned or larger. I use them a lot and often miss the key, hitting one adjacent to it, like the "0" key or the "home" key. Also, I use the scroll bars often. They could be wider and there should be some way to turn off the pesky pop-ups that display when moving the cursor to the edge of the screen."

"Have had a few experiences with Toshiba's before and have not been impressed overall, but thought I would try them out again since they had what I wanted at a fair price. "This is my 2'nd Toshiba laptop. The 1"st one still runs fine after 5 years but I thought I'd treat myself to a better processor. After two months this new laptop has met all expectations. I7 processor handles all my video editing with ease. Windows 8 is not all that user friendly but after the learning curve I can use it without much trouble."

"Ever since the first time I used this laptop, it had given me some problems. It has trouble restarting and programs tend to close randomly. Even during the first week I was presented with a blue screen and a pfn_list_corrupt error. Perhaps it's just a Windows 8 issue, but there are certain things I can and cannot do with this laptop. My last HP laptop was half the price and never gave me these issues."

"I'm not one to read instruction manuals before using a product, but I think it would have been wise to do so with this laptop. Navigation isn't very intuitive. This is the first laptop I've owned where using it right out of the box was a struggle. Now that I've become more familiar with the laptop, it's become easier."

"Everything is cool except the short battery life...I liked the design and the performance of the laptop. The one thing that is interesting is that the laptop is light weight somehow,I mean like I had another old Toshiba satellite laptop and it's kind heavy but this one is not. Windows 8 is the most boring feature I discovered but I was happy the moment I found out that I was able to bring the start menu back. The Corei5 processor is fast. The other flow is that the sound quality is not premium and the volume is very low(@100volume I can't hear as I thought I would. Generally the laptop is nice and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in budget laptop with premium features."

"Only 2 things that but me about this laptop, otherwise everything else is great.
1) The mouse pad. You don't have to touch it and your screen either gets to big or to small. I'm a very good typist and have never ran into this problem on any other lap top before.
2) The battery life maybe be average, but it laptop can use it very quickly. Don't bother putting it on the performance mode unless plugged in unless you want less then 4 hrs."

"In the end, I love this laptop - but it took a lot of work to get it there. As far as hardware goes I think it is terrific for the price. The operating system, Windows 8, does not seem to fit for a laptop without a touchscreen. I think that I could have gotten used to it given time, but I found that my primary software would not function in Windows 8 even though it worked well in Windows 7. That is not necessarily a surprise. I expected there may be issues with a change in operating systems. What was a surprise was how I was prevented from dual booting Windows 7 alongside Windows 8 by the UEFI Bios and GPT type partitioning of the hard disk. I have had no experiences with either of these relatively new technologies to this point. I researched extensively on the internet for a solution that would allow me to dual boot Windows 7 without success. I ended up turning off the UEFI Bios, installing a new hard drive which I partitioned in a standard fashion without GPT. After that I installed Windows 7. I kept the original hard drive with Windows 8 on it in case I should stumble across a solution down the road, or until my software is upgraded to support Windows 8. So it was a little frustrating for a while, but in the end this thing is a powerhouse! I can't seem to throw enough at it to slow it down!"

"The keyboard isn't the easiest to use primarily because the keys take a lot of pressure to use. Further this computer has a design flaw seen in many laptops, notably that the keyboard and mouse pad do not consistently function at the same time. Windows 8 does not appear to be of any improvement. Lastly, I was anticipating that it would be a substantial improvement, performance wise, on my previous laptop based off of the specs, in reality it is probably just a little bit slower."

"As a novelist, I often need multiple programs open simultaneously as well as more than one browser window with several tabs each. My old Acer Aspire, win7, very rarely generated low memory messages, and only in the last 6 months of it's 3 yr lifespan. My new Toshiba Satellite generated multiple low memory messages the first day I used it for work. My old Toshiba Satellite, win XP, is still running and has only had a couple low memory messages.
I expected my new Toshiba Satellite to be at least as powerful as my old Acer."

"I did a lot of research as to what type of laptop I wanted including the cloud products such as Chromebook and Microsoft Surface. I really wanted the additional features of the CD/DVD drive and internal memory. I didn't want to rely solely on cloud storage. Overall, this is a great laptop. Very speedy and I haven't experienced any glitches yet. My only small complaint has been with Windows 8 and that's probably just because I'm not used to it yet so I still stick more with the "desktop." I highly recommend this laptop, I'm very satisfied."

"I am very pleased with the computer which has performed just as I had hoped. Only one complaint is that the keyboard sensitivity which sometimes causes a letter to not register but this is very minor. "So far it has been fine, speed is nice. First time I have used Win 8 so don't know if that is the reason for speed or due to C7 processor, but nice and fast to open programs etc. The touchpad is not very sensitive which is giving me problems and can't find that it is adjustable as my Dell XPS was. "The review title really says it all. I've owned this computer 3 days and the touchpad has not worked right from the get go. It is irratic, it freezes up, it zooms in when it's supposed to be scrolling. It scrolls side to side when I want up and down and at times the cursor just dissappears and of course it's intermittent. - Otherwise it works great with a USB mouse, but that's not what I paid for.
I normally have a high opinion of Toshiba products which is why I bought this one, but their use of the Synaptics touchpad would seem to be a mistake.
The forums are loaded with complaints about the Synaptics product in most laptop manufacturers and not one solid solution that I can find."

"My husband bought me this computer for our 63rd. Wedding anniversary . I liked my old one a lot better then I do this one .It had Windows xp in it .With this new one you get into your e-mail and you have trouble getting to the home page . I really think it should be explained on how to use it more then it does . I still have my other one and I still use it quite a lot . The games on this new one are not the same as on the old one either . It can be the same game but it doesn't play the same . "The usb ports do not fit most devices such as printer, mouse, ipod. Windows 8 is a giant phone app and should have never been put on a computer. If I had to do it all over again I would have purchased the HP Envy. The difference in icore5 and icore7 processors is not that significant. There is no computer manual and so its all trial and error. This was an EPIC FAIL!"

"I would never recommend that someone get a Windows 8 operating system. It may be great for playing around on a computer, but TERRIBLE for work. If I'd known it would be so bad, I would have taken my son's advice and gotten a Mac.

"My biggest complaint is the design of the key board. The older model (which I owned) had a curved down slop that made it comfortable on the wrist for typing. Perhaps in an effort to save money/profits (?) this aspect is now gone. The edge of the key board becomes painful to the wrist if you do a lot of typing. The keys are also spaced further a part and are less sensitive, which for me results in less typing efficiency. I prefer the older model that probably cost more for Toshiba to produce (my opinion)."

"After 6+ years of rugged use, my Toshiba Sattelite A305 quietly died after putting up quite a struggle. I immediately sought out a new Satellite. I found a good deal at the local office supply store and thought I had dodged a bullet. The old Satellite was my life. I was able to transfer my files and was feeling pretty good about the loss of a trusted friend. Then, reality sunk in. First, the new unit was defective and was replaced. Then, I realized that the operation is different from my old friend. I suppose that I will get used to it. The battery life is better. The ergonomics are a trade off.....I don't like the keyboard......I do like the operating speed."

"I had to have my son set up my new Toshiba as I was not familiar with Windows 8. He set me up to be able to email and play my games. He'll inform me on other things in time. My one problem, NOW, is while I am playing my games, it tells me that the Internet Explorer has stopped working. I don't know why and it does not tell me. I have updated when I'm told, so I don't know what else to do. Other than that, it is fast to use. AND the one feature I love is the button you can shut down the use of the mouse pad. Overall, I love my Toshiba!"

"I was long overdue to replace my Dell Dimension desktop and Dell Inspiron laptop. The desktop was running XP and the laptop was running Vista (worst OS ever). I use Adobe Photoshop to edit photos and it is a pretty demanding application. My old computers struggled with it but it runs great on the new Toshiba laptop. My web browsing, which had become frustratingly slow with IE 8 on the XP and Vista machines, is blazing fast on the new Toshiba laptop. Application startup times, boot time, and shutdown time, are also very fast. It is now a pleasant experience to work on the computer again. I really like the touch and feel of the keypad. Note: I have only used the Toshiba laptop on A/C power, so I don't know for sure if my battery life rating is accurate. Toshiba's web site says the laptop can be run on battery up to 12 hours, which if true seems excellent."

"I'm a little disappointed with this computer. I'm not sure if it's because the computer is less than hoped for or if it's the awful Windows 8 operating system. I definitely do not like W-8. I also don't know wny Toshiba has to put so much not wanted or needed Apps on the computer. I have not found this computer to be as easy to configure the way I want it to be, but again. I'm not sure if it's the computer (I've no trouble with previous Toshibas) or that W-8. This computer replaced a Toshiba with W-7 which developed a major mechanical problem I wish I had replaced it with a W-7 equipped device."

"I have had Toshiba laptops for the last decade and have owned at least seven. Some things about Toshiba I am very happy with. The features tend to be improving as the price comes down. However, two points I am not as happy with. The computer itself isn't as rugged as early Toshiba laptops. This is important for me, because I travel with my work a lot. The second negative feature isn't so much Toshiba's problem, but Microsoft. The most recent version of the Microsoft operating system, Windows 8, is horrible! So if you get a Toshiba Satellite, switch operating systems!"

I researched this laptop before I purchase it and I seen a few bad reviews about the keyboard but I thought maybe they just got 1 of the bad apples out f the bunch. "I feel that TOSHIBA put profit ahead of value/functionality with this model. I am very disappointed. The Realtek RTL8723AE WIFI NIC card is useless.
The key board does not work well. You have to press down forcefully when typing compared to other models.
Windows 8 is a joke. It appears to built for social networking. I swear by TOSHIBA products because of the 15+ year history of using laptops error free. Each TOSHIBA laptop that I purchased has had I life span of 5yrs or more. My kids get the hand me downs."

"Toshiba has produced a potentially excellent computer. With Windows 8 installed, however, the value is destroyed. The desktop is cluttered and bewildering. Every application in the computer, including applications used only within other applications, is included. Finding the application one wants is time consuming when compared with the Windows 7 desktop, on which is included only the applications one chooses to include.
Updates are difficult to install. The initial Windows updates refuse to configure. At least every other day, power-down or restart includes "install updates," and there is no way to bypass the process. It takes 28 minutes for the updates to install, configure, fail, and be reverted. This is unacceptable!
Norton does a "cleanup" daily. One of the things it does is wipe all of my saved auto-logon data, making username and password entry necessary every day. I've tried to bypass this feature, but every effort has been thwarted.
These items are but a few of the reasons why I can't recommend this computer to a friend, or even to an enemy. Unless one can be found with Windows 7 installed I highly recommend against its purchase."

"This was a replacement for a Dell.
The set-up process was adequate and intuitive at a basic level. Advanced features required excessive efforts to implement.
The machine crashes at least one a week requiring a hard shutdown/restart. For the i7 CPU, it's just plain slow. The memory is adequate. The biggest issue is that this not a well integrated machine - it's slow and appears that is was designed for a Windows 7 OS. While Windows 8 is not a panacea, this PC appears to be more of an afterthought as opposed a well designed (or at least competently designed) PC.
I just cannot think of a good target audience for this PC given it's design and performance."

It requires frequent editing and rekeying of letters to fill in where my keystrokes have not been recognized during the first pass.

"My previous laptop was a satellite A665-s5199x but it didnt have enough video ram for AutoCad. The S855 came with 2 megs video ram which made all the difference in the world. In comparison the older laptop was build tougher and had a better keyboard and speakers, one more USB drive and a quad core I5. The new one isn't a quad core and had one USB drive broken out of the box. I really like the features but hope Toshiba will keep quality standards higher."

"My old laptop is 11 years old. After using the Toshiba the old one is soooooooo slow. Toshiba has great speed, excellent color display, abundant features, great follow up and support. I am expecting the durability to be great also."

"I wish I had looked more carefully at the maximum display resolution and had more time to use the key board.
I cannot seem to find the right angle for proper viewing of the display. Too light, to dark, shadowing and ghosting of the picture are just some of the results.
The Keyboard!!!! Come on! It is actually flimsy and the feedback is nonexistent. I have other Toshiba's and you always have the worst keyboards, but on an i7 machine I expected better. Very disappointed."

"I like Toshiba, I have had another Toshiba laptop for several years now with no problems except a bad battery. My problem is not as much with Toshiba as it is with trying to learn the new operating system (not fond of windows 8 at this time). It has made it difficult to locate my wireless printer, router, you name it. My only comment on the laptop is that I continue to get an error message that "my computer has encountered a serious problem and needed to reboot". This happens about every other time I power up. Additionally, I sorely miss the Hibernate option!!"

"It is always hard to switch from one brand and one computer that you were extremely proficient with to another. In this case, I went from an ASUS to a Toshiba. The key thing I dislike about the Toshiba is the keyboard. The keys are just slightly too far apart and do not depress down enough so that someone who is extremely proficient at keyboarding (90 wpm with 2% error ratio). I am perennially going back and fixing letters that I wanted to be capitalized, but did not capitalize. Frustrating and annoying. The most frustrating aspect of this new computer isn't Toshiba itself, it is Windows 8. This OS would be much easier with a touchscreen, although for the way I use a computer touchscreen wouldn't be useful! It isn't a handheld devise. It isn't a tablet. I do a lot of data centric computing. The Windows 8 OS obviously has impacted how I feel about working using this computer. Windows 8 needs an overhaul! The second thing I notice a significantly lower quality screen resolution than my ASUS had. I can't harp too much though, as the Toshiba was also significantly cheaper. I miss the crisp bright easy to read imagery though. Other than the keyboard and the image resolution, I am happy enough with Toshiba. The screen size is nice. The computer doesn't way too much which makes it easier for portability."

"This is a good laptop except for the mouse-pad and its multi directional use does not work great and the speed of the pointer seems like it does not want to catch up to what is being done. I am not a fan of Windows 8 but I have no choice now. Overall this is not a bad product it could use a few minor upgrades! I would recommend it!"

"Only complaint I have is it only has a 5400rpm drive. I find that the drive itself is very slow in use, and the system frequently complains about high hard drive usage when doing simple tasks. Upgrade the speed, even at the cost of capacity, and it's a winner!"

"The Toshiba Satellite S855-S5369 Laptop, is one of the best basic computers that I used, some computer characteristics have excellent ratings; the third generation processor Core i5 with the Graphics Intel HD 4000 that results one of the better that I have seen. But the computer could be better with a graphic card like Nvidia GeForce 650M, but with the known characteristics is one of the best."

"I purchased this laptop because of the great feature/price combination. Once I got it home, I noticed two things about it that bother me to the point I am not sure I could recommend it to someone else.
One is the touchpad. I am not particularly fond of the design of the touchpad. It feels cheaply made and not as responsive as I would like.
The other concern is what appears to be a very fragile design of the laptop case. It has a brushed aluminum top that seems to be paper thin and is easily pushed in with little to no pressure and the side plastic moldings seem to be very fragile and similar to what is found on low quality toys. It may be some sort of high impact plastic, but I do not wish to test the theory.
In summary, great features, good price, but feels like it can break at any moment."

"I am really enjoying the computer aside from the keyboard. The performance on this computer for the price, there is no better deal. The problem is the terrible keyboard. The amount of features on the computer are very good (usb 3.0, hdmi very good display) but the only reason I gave the computer 1 star in features is reflective of the keyboard and to a lesser extent the speakers.The sound is not great on the speakers, but this is not important to me because I always use headphones.The keyboard actually hinders the function of the computer for me. The keyboard is of extremely cheap quality. There are keys that you must press much harder on in order for them to work. It is just a very terrible feel and detracts from my efficiency."
