"I purchased this 1TB portable disk drive to back up my laptop after learning the hard way the dangers of not backing up my files. It worked right from the start, not exactly the fastest backup, but hardly slow either, backed up faster than my friend's computer running same OS (Windows 7 64-bit) and I have USB 2.0 on my laptop. Our computer hard drives are both 250GB as well. I went for a bit of overkill on my portable drive in case I every replace my computer and that has a larger hard drive."

"The poster from UT obviously doesn't know this drive, as my drives (yes multiple) came with a single USB 3.0 cable that was sturdy, and had only 1 connector at each end. The drive performs fast as lightning, and the case is significantly better constructed than comparable drives from WD or Seagate. On top of all this, the drive has a 3-year warranty. You can't beat that with a stick!"

Works on my HP 3.0 USB LT
Wont work on my HP 2.0 USB LT.
I cannot confirm on other USB 2.0 but it seems I need a special cable to use it.ETITHER PUT IT IN THE BOX OR LABLE IT AS SUCH
If all you are gonna use it for is USB 3 you will love this unit. Priced right with 3 yr warranty beats the compitition hands down. If you ever think you may take it to a friend be warned. IF he has an old pc/lt you may not be able to share data."

"got the 1TB because of the price. Don't. Had it less than 3 weeks and filled it halfway up with my Wii, and all the sudden it froze up and died.
I tried removing the HD from he enclosure, but f'n Toshiba WELDED the enclosure closed, so I can not even get my data off before returning/trashing.
Normally I like Toshiba, but after reading other reviews on the DWC110, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!
ps-another person posted you need USB 3.0. Not true; worked perfect for a while in 2.0, not will not work at all, even in 3.0."

"If you use the pass code feature - you can not unlock the drive and just see what files are on the drive - it only gives you the option to back up you files or restore your files - this drive does not allow you just to look at whats on the drive if you use a pass code feature - other then that it does what it is made to do and that is back up your files or restore your files - it does not come with a users guide that tells you how to use the drive - and if you want to back up your files and see whats on the drive you have to do it without using a pass code feature and that is not secure - this device needs a little more thinking put into the design coming from a company that has leading innovation in its company name - bought this back up drive on 02162013"

"Just bought it for my iMac and did the first backup using Time Machine (TM)... It was so easy. TM identified it and asked if I wanted to use it as a backup device, I said yes. It asked if I really wanted to erase and reformat the disk. This is the only reason I don,t give it 5 stars, it erased all the software that came with the HD. However, if using TM, you don,t need the preinstalled software. I then scheduled my backup, and presto, within less than an hour it was done. Easy to use and great value."

"What a piece of junk! Plugged it into a TOSHIBA laptop and created a couple of backup directories. Second file transferred caused an over-current shutdown and now the drive cannot be copied to. Run, as if your life depended on it, away from this piece of junk. I read the "junky cable" reviews and plugged it into a seldom used USB port, so I KNOW the port connector is good. I don't think that that is the problem. I don't think I'll ever buy another Toshiba product after they released this piece of junk!"

Tried writing to the drive and it failed. Now the drive isn't even recognized by ANY Windows or Mac machine. And yes—it's *supposed* to work with a Mac. "On first use it took 5 tries before it finally stated my backups were complete and I was protected. After my Toshiba Satellite crashed due to it being in sleep mode when my battery ran down (Never let a Toshiba laptop go to sleep or put it in sleep mode) ; I had to use it to back up my system when all other attempts to boot up failed. When it finally restored my C drive it created different partitions( Causing me to lose a lot pf disk space) and uninstalled my antivirus programs and deleted all of my Toshiba (of all things) application shortcuts from my Start menu programs list. It also deleted some other items. I am not sure if I've found them all yet. The next time my computer crashed I couldn't get the BU drive to boot up my computer at all. So after I fixed my computer by other means I checked out the BU drive and found a bunch of missing files and folders that it had shown earlier were backed up. Due to NO HELP that dI could find ANYWHERE, I deleted all of the back up images and files and re-installed the software for the BU drive. Then with absolutely no data at all on the BU Drive, it showed that all my data was backed up and my computer was fully protected when there was nothing on it! Therefore; do not trust what the Back up program says! In 40 years of working on computers; Toshiba products have proven to be the most unreliable and worst I have ever encountered!"

"After I bought this drive I quickly installed it and then began a backup using third-party software that I've used successfully with other external drives. I had read reviews in other venues that blasted this Toshiba drive for suddenly disappearing or having severe problems. I began backup of my major hard drive and 57% of the way through the drive went clunk. Windows Vista (64-bit) told me that the drive had been dropped and could not be found. I had thought about this before buying the drive and so rebooted and immediately ran error-checking on the hard drive (in Vista, My Computer, highlight the drive, click properties, click tools, select error checking). Five file fragments were found and were converted to files. I reran the backup and it went flawlessly. Next I error checked my two other hard drives and then backed them up equally successfully. I have had absolutely no problems with the drive after error-checking and it is fast and efficient once I got rid of the problems on my computer. After that the Toshiba did the rest beautifully."

"I understand that this disk needs to be reformatted in order to work with a Mac. However the Disk Utility on my new 15" MacBook Pro doesn't even see this disk. The computer hangs for many seconds when I connect the disk. There seems to be some fundamental incompatibility.
The disk works just find on my Lenovo laptop running Windows XP. I wish I knew what the problem was with my Mac."

"Nice speedy little drive. No under voltage problems when used with my laptop like my other drive. I do find it hard to safely remove but that is more likely a Windows problem. My only real complaint is that I can't find a support page of any kind. For that it gets 3 stars. Otherwise a 4-5 star product."

"My previous portable hard drive was compatible for both read and write right of the box with my MAC and PC. It's why I chose it. No this new one and I can't find any information on how to make that happen or if it's possible. Oh, wait, I find lots of people on the forums saying "it's not possible" which makes me feel like I'm delusional. Now I have to return this new one and look online for an older model."

"This is a very easy unit to set up and run. I'm using Windows 7 and it set up o.k. Nice and compact so it doesn't hog up a lot of desktop space. I bought two of them. One I store my files on and the other one backs up the first one. When I did my first back up it took a total of 9 and 1/2 hours to back up 135 GB's of data. So.....that was all day! Grrr! I won't be buying another one. Maybe a 2.0 USB port is not as fast as a 3.0? I'm not sure, but it was veryyyy slow at doing a backup:("

"The NTI software supplied with this hard drive is not compatable with Windows 7. NTI told me I should set my compatable mode to Windows XP. This means this software was written before Vista or Windows 7. Changing the compatable did not work. Toshiba product support does not list this hard drive."

"I found that the hard drive wouldn't work on my Mac unless it is connected to two USB ports (via a splitter) or a powered USB hub. I bet a lot of the problems users are having with this are a result of it being underpowered. Otherwise it works fine. Hopefully this helps some of you."

"The instruction booklet doesn't offer much info about setting unit up other than how to plug it in. The software that is included in the drive is the same as the booklet. Unit updated the software when it was plugged in. Setup wouldn't work and kept giving an illegal operation error and would terminate. When going to Toshiba support site the product number isn't in their system but does show up as avalilable to buy. It will store the files with no problem and has a fast transfer rate. I would recommend it as a file storage unit but don't count on the backup software that is preinstalled to work."
