TOSHIBA ANNOUNCES INAGURAL EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY LEADER OF THE YEAR

Company Selects Members of Education Advisory Council for the 2016-2017 School Year

DENVER, ISTE 2016, Colorado Convention Center Booth #2524 – June 27, 2016 – Toshiba’s Client Solutions Division (CSD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced Robert Craven of the Tustin Unified School District as the organization’s inaugural Education Technology Leader of the Year. Toshiba also announced today the members of its Education Advisory Board for 2016-2017 School Year.

“Over the years, Toshiba has worked with numerous influencers who have pioneered the importance computers have in the classroom,” said Paul Hickey, Director of Sales, Client Solutions Division, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. “It’s an honor to announce Robert Craven as the inaugural winner of the Toshiba Education Technology Leader of the Year award. His vision and commitment to bringing technology into the classroom is exactly what we want this award to symbolize. Robert understands the value a device affords a student in the learning process, as well as the advantages it gives students once they join the work force.”

During the past two years, Craven has successfully rolled out a one-to-one notebook program to the three high schools and a tablet program to the district’s elementary and middle schools. The Tustin Unified School District has 24,000 students spread across 18 elementary schools, six middle schools and three high schools. Understanding that not all students have Internet access at home to complete assignments, Craven extended the schools’ on-campus Wi-Fi® networks to include the parking lots so students could gain Internet and Intranet access after school hours and on the weekends.

As the winner of the inaugural Toshiba Education Technology Leader of the Year award, Craven will also serve as co-chair of the Education Advisory Board for 2016-2017 School Year. In addition to Craven, this year’s council includes Tam Nguyen of Orange Unified School District, Sarah Porisch of Brainerd Public Schools, Janet Thorson of Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart and Kyle Berger of Duncanville Intermediate School District. This group of IT professionals has more than 70 years of combined experience between them and come from both public and private school environments.

“The insight and collective knowledge of an advisory council is immeasurable and truly an asset to any organization,” said Hickey. “For three decades, Toshiba has enlisted the expertise of educators and IT professionals to help shape our future computing solutions and services to ensure they fulfill the day-to-day and long-term needs of students and teachers.”

During the 2016-2017 School Year, Toshiba will host the council multiple times to discuss products, trends and potential new services and solutions. This year’s council will also focus on paths to enhance the blending of hardware and software. The first advisory council meeting will take place in late September.

About the Council

With 15 years of experience, Robert Craven manages the Information Technology Department for Tustin Unified School District and is responsible for all of the technology in the District. A major responsibility is the designing, installing, and the maintaining of the networks at all of the sites, including the district office.

For the past 19 years, Janet Thorson has served as the director of technology for Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart. As director of technology, she facilitates the academy’s IT resources and is instrumental in the creation of a student run IT service and support program called CAVE (Computer Audio Visual Education).

Kyle Berger of Duncanville Independent School District has over 15 years in K-12 technology leadership spread across districts of various sizes and demographics. Berger’s experiences include one-to-one deployment, complete district revitalization and overseeing of bond programs, as well as redefining technology in several districts.

Tam Nguyen has worked in Orange Country School District IT departments for 16 years and with the Orange Unified School District’s (OUSD) IT department for 3 years supporting the district’s 40 schools, 29,000 students and more than 32,000 network-enable devices. Nguyen also redesigned physical and logical network at OUSD to accommodate exponential device growth and BYOD, including upgrading all WAN and LAN connections to 10GB single mode fiber optic cabling.

Sarah Porisch of Brainerd Public Schools in Minnesota oversees the adoption and implementation of the IT resources for the 6,300-student district. Porisch finalized the purchase of more than five hundred 2-in-1 Portege Z20T detachable computing devices.
